U.I. RECIPIENTS DECLINE BY 1,600 IN OCTOBER

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits declined by 1,600 from September to October.

The decline in jobless claims came mostly in manufacturing, trade and service-related industries.

In October, 35,551 people drew $21,202,263 in jobless benefits, down from 37,158 who drew $21,466,388 in September. In October 1998, 34,825 drew $18,188,443. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $264.

The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from September to October is as follows:

-- Albany, claims down by 23 from 607 to 584.

-- Athens, claims down by four from 355 to 351.

-- Atlanta, claims up by 166 from 11,475 to 11,641.

-- Augusta, claims down by 78 from 1,151 to 1,073.

-- Columbus, claims up by 36 from 823 to 859.

-- Macon, claims up by 72 from 1,121 to 1,193.
