SATELLITE HOOK-UP TO AID SUNBELT AG EXPO EXHIBITORS IN MOULTRIE
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the Georgia Department of Labor will install a high-tech satellite transmission system next week to help companies fill job openings at the upcoming Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie.
"The satellite hook-up allows us to help the exhibitors of farm equipment and agricultural products get the personnel necessary to display their wares at the largest farm show in the country," said Thurmond. "The use of this technology allows us to almost immediately help employers who find themselves needing more workers."
Called VSAT, the satellite system will be used at a temporary labor facility set up by personnel of the department's Moultrie office to help the exhibitors find workers during the period leading up to and after the ag expo, set for Oct. 19-21.
The labor department will open an office Monday, Oct. 11, at Spence Field, the site of the ag expo, to serve 1,100 exhibitors from 45 states and several foreign countries. Construction workers will be needed to set up and take down the exhibits, as well as sales representatives and other skilled and unskilled employees to work during the expo. The office will remain open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until Oct. 22.
The satellite transmission system, which allows department personnel to send and receive labor market information from their computers to the mainframe computer at the central office in Atlanta, will be installed at the temporary office. Here's how the system works: A department employee will take a job order from an exhibitor and enter it into a computer. That information will then be sent to the satellite dish. Then, it is transmitted to a satellite, which is orbiting the earth, and sent back to a master satellite hub at Avdata in Atlanta. The information is sent via

telephone lines to the department's mainframe computer, where it is automatically entered and a job match begins.
The system consists of a portable satellite dish and a power generator that can be moved to almost any location in the state within a matter of hours. Since it is a self-contained unit, the equipment can be used in situations where there is no electricity. Once the satellite dish arrives, it takes only about 45 minutes for labor department engineers to set up and become operational.
