LABOR DEPARTMENT BECOMES FIRST STATE AGENCY

TO OFFICIALLY CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Labor has become the first state agency to observe Hispanic Heritage Month, Oct. 1-15. In 1993, the department became the first in state government to begin an official celebration of Black History Month.

In recent ceremonies initiating an official celebration of Hispanic Heritage, State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said: "This is the beginning of great things. It's a recognition that diversity is what makes Georgia and America great. And, we're going to embrace diversity, no matter whether it's cultural, religious or gender, and make sure that all of Georgia's citizens celebrate our walk in prosperity."

Gov. Roy Barnes, who was traveling to Japan at the time of the ceremonies, sent Brenda Cornelius, director of community relations, Office of the Governor, as his representative. She said the Governor's Office is reaching out far and wide to all citizens to ensure inclusion and diversity in government. "It takes all of us to make Georgia special," she said. "The governor is excited about the celebration that's happening here."

Festivities, including folkloric entertainment and samples of hispanic food, are held each Friday through Oct. 15 in the parking lot of the department's main office at Sussex Place, 148 International Blvd. in Atlanta. The observance also includes historical, cultural and informational items of interest for the viewing public in the office lobby.

On Friday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m., Dr. Bill Hayes, of the Educational Opportunity Center at Georgia State University, will be the principal speaker.
