U.I. RECIPIENTS DECLINE BY 4,000 IN SEPTEMBER
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits declined by 4,000 from August to September.
The decline in jobless claims came mostly in the manufacturing of electrical machinery, trade and service-related industries.
In September, 37,158 people drew $21,466,388 in jobless benefits, down from 41,329 who drew $26,033,811 in August. In September, 1998, 35,833 drew $21,157,199. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $264.
The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from August to September is as follows:
-- Albany, claims down by 108 from 689 to 581.
-- Athens, claims down by 111 from 427 to 316.
-- Atlanta, claims down by 1,368 from 12,235 to 10,867.
-- Augusta, claims down by 207 from 1,311 to 1,104.
-- Columbus, claims down by 149 from 931 to 782.
