HEART OF GEORGIA-ALTAMAHA'S JOBLESS RATE RISES TO 7.4 PERCENT

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the unemployment rate in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha area rose to 7.4 percent in December, up from 6.1 percent in November. The area's jobless rate was 5.8 percent in December 1997.

"While most of the state enjoyed declining unemployment rates in December," Thurmond said, "the rate rose in this area, because some textile and apparel workers were laid off temporarily. Seasonal layoffs at this time of year in these two industries are quite common, because orders for manufactured goods have been filled and companies need to deplete their inventories, so they lay some employees off for a short time. However, these employees are normally called back to work fairly soon."
While unemployment rose by 1,750 to 8,850, area employers hired 730 new workers, pushing employment to 110,500.

"We know that some employers have jobs that are unfilled, because of a shortage of workers with the skills and training to meet their specific needs," Thurmond said. "My goal is to develop a work force with the skills to meet the job demands of employers throughout Georgia."

Georgia's unemployment rate declined to 3.6 percent in December, down from 3.8 percent in November. The state's jobless rate was also 3.8 percent in December 1997.
