STATE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS TO 3.6 PERCENT IN DECEMBER
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that Georgia's unemployment rate declined to 3.6 percent in December, down from 3.8 percent in November. The state's jobless rate was also 3.8 percent in December 1997.
"For the second straight month, the decline in the rate was closely tied to the holiday shopping season," Thurmond said. "Leading up to Christmas, retailers do most of their hiring in November and December, as part-time and temporary workers are added to their sales forces. In fact, three out of every four workers added during the month were hired by retailers. In January, however, the unemployment rate usually goes up when retailers lay off workers."
In December, the number of nonfarm jobs in Georgia rose to 3,826,400, up by 16,700 from November, with 11,900, or 71 percent, of those in retail trade. More than one-half of the new jobs added were in the 20-county metro Atlanta area, where nonfarm employment rose by 9,100 to 2,081,600.
Athens and Macon, with 75,900 and 153,600 jobs respectively, were the only two metro areas that failed to register any new job growth during the month.
The other metro areas and their nonfarm job increases are as follows:
-- Albany, 100, from 60,600 to 60,700.
-- Augusta, 300, from 197,500 to 197,800.
-- Columbus, 500, from 118,900 to 119,400.
-- Savannah, 700, from 135,200 to 135,900.
