THURMOND PLANS EXPANSION OF STUDENT CAREER PROGRAM

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that Gov. Roy Barnes has joined him in asking the Georgia General Assembly to provide nearly $1 million of additional funding to help high school students make a successful transition to work.

"The additional funding is necessary for us to restructure and expand our Jobs for Georgia Graduates (JGG) program, which is designed to bring 'at-risk' high school seniors into the workplace or military, and encourage them to continue their education after high school," said Thurmond. "This is one of the most valuable programs available to help our youth begin successful, productive and rewarding lives. I greatly appreciate Gov. Barnes' support."

Thurmond's request for an additional $250,000 for the program, represents an increase of 26 percent to its current annual funding of $958,000. The additional money will be used to develop a five-year plan to refocus and expand the program to better serve Georgia's youth. The governor is also supporting Thurmond's request for an additional increase of $590,000 for the department's fiscal year 2000 budget, which would be used to implement the restructuring plan.

"This program currently is limited to seniors," Thurmond said. "I intend to expand its scope, so that we can work with students in grades nine through 11. This will enable us to reach 'at-risk' youth who might otherwise drop out of school before their senior year. I also plan to increase the number of schools we serve, so that we can take this important career development tool to more of our state's communities."

Jobs for Georgia Graduates is a state affiliate of the national model, Jobs for America's Graduates, Inc. Approximately 7,000 Georgia students have been served by JGG, since it began in 1987. During each school year, approximately 45 seniors are selected to participate in each of the 17 program sites which are located in high schools throughout Georgia. Job specialists are located on-site and work directly with the students during the 18-month program. The students are taught job skills, receive counseling on career development and work ethics, assisted in finding a job and given follow-up services.

"This program is already successful, but we can take it to a new level with the additional funding," said Thurmond. "This is an important piece of my plan to develop a world-class work force in Georgia."
