FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.I. RECIPIENTS INCREASE BY 13,000 IN DECEMBER

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said today that the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits increased by more than 13,000 from November to December.

The increase in jobless claims came mostly in textile manufacturing, retail trade and business services, as well as those filed by people working outside in construction, agriculture and lumber manufacturing.

In December, 50,069 people drew $25,986,291 in jobless benefits, up from 36,852 who drew $18,725,270 in November. In December 1997, 48,506 drew $22,583,525. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $244.

The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from November to December is as follows:

-- Albany, claims down by 34 from 735 to 701.

-- Athens, claims up by five from 337 to 342.

-- Atlanta, claims up by 527 from 10,973 to 11,500.

-- Augusta, claims down by six from 1,035 to 1,029.

-- Columbus, claims up by 53 from 748 to 801.

-- Macon, claims down by 27 from 1,245 to 1,218.

-- Savannah, claims down by 19 from 1,179 to 1,160.
