FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MICHAEL L. THURMOND SWORN IN AS STATE LABOR COMMISSIONER

ATLANTA -- Michael L. Thurmond, a 45-year-old attorney from Athens, became Georgia's eighth labor commissioner on Jan. 11. His wife, Zola, and their daughter, Mikaya, stood beside him on the chilly, but sunny day in Atlanta as Georgia's new Governor, Roy Barnes, administered the oath of office.

Commissioner Thurmond made history in November when he became the state's first African-American to be elected to a state office without first having been appointed to the office and running for election as an incumbent.

In 1997, the commissioner was appointed the first distinguished practitioner/lecturer at the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government, where he's worked until becoming labor commissioner.

Prior to his appointment at the university, he was head of DFACS for four years, where he developed and directed the state's historic transition from welfare to work, a program that has served as a model for the rest of the nation.

Commissioner Thurmond is a graduate of Paine College in Augusta and holds a law degree from the University of South Carolina.

He practiced law in Clarke County and took an active role in Athens' civic and political affairs, serving as the city's assistant attorney and serving on numerous boards and commissions.

In 1986, he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, where he served three terms.
