FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WALT ADAMS NAMED ASSISTANT LABOR COMMISSIONER
ATLANTA--State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that she has appointed Walter N. Adams of DeKalb County assistant commissioner of the department's unemployment insurance division.
"Walt Adams has more than 20 years of experience in the unemployment insurance division and probably has a better overall understanding of unemployment insurance issues than anyone in state government," said Fullerton. "Throughout his career, he has been deeply involved in all aspects of the insurance program, from providing legal advice and representing the department in legal proceedings to drafting every bill that's gone before the general assembly since 1984. Plus, he's well-respected and liked throughout the agency. Walt's the ideal person to manage this division of the labor department."
Adams, 51, joined the labor department as a legal services officer assistant in 1978, after six years in private law practice in Atlanta. Two years later, he was promoted to assistant general counsel. In 1984, he was again promoted, this time to chief of the unemployment insurance legal section and held that position until being named assistant commissioner.
Adams served as legal advisor to the task force that revised the state's Employment Security Law in 1991, when Georgia became the first and only state to completely revise its Employment Security Law. He has drafted every department-proposed employment security law, including those which reduced the tax rates paid by employers to fund the unemployment insurance program and increased the weekly benefit received by unemployed workers, and then worked with lawmakers to ensure their passage.
He has served two terms as president of the Georgia Chapter of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security (IAPES), the professional organization for the nation's labor department employees, and is the district representativeelect who will represent Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico on the IAPES international board of directors. He is a member of the Georgia Bar Association.
Adams, a native of Washington, Ga., earned a B.B.A. degree in management from Emory University and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1972.
He and his wife Kathy reside in Tucker and have three children. He is a former elder in the Presbyterian Church. They attend Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta.
