FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SOUTHEAST GEORGIA'S JOBLESS RATE RISES TO 4.9 PERCENT IN MAY
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that the unemployment rate in the Southeast Georgia region rose to 4.9 percent, up from 4.5 percent in April. The area's jobless rate was 5.8 percent in May 1997.
"The increase in Southeast Georgia's unemployment rate was expected as students entered the job market looking for work," Fullerton said. "While someone is job prospecting, they're counted as unemployed, which pushes the rate up. However, since the area continues to enjoy solid job growth, they should have no problem finding a job."
In May, the region's civilian labor force, which is the number of people working plus those unemployed but actively looking for a job, totaled 62,885. Of that number, 59,828 had jobs and 3,057 did not.
In May 1997, the area's work force totaled 62,282. Of that number, 58,691 were employed and 3,591 were unemployed.
Georgia's unemployment rate in May was 3.8 percent, a slight increase from April's rate of 3.6 percent. The rate in May 1997 was 4.4 percent.
Labor market data and graphics are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor's home page at www.dol.state.ga.us
