STATE LABOR DEPARTMENT PLANS TO TAKE UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE CLAIMS FOR GM WORKERS AT DORAVILLE THURSDAY, JUNE 25

ATLANTA -- Officials of the Georgia Department of Labor announced plans today to begin taking unemployment insurance claims for laid-off workers at the General Motors plant in Doraville.

Tentatively, the labor department plans to take the claims, beginning at 8 a.m.Thursday, June 25, at the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 10 union hall, located at 5407 Buford Highway, Doraville. Labor department officials stressed that this action is pending the receipt of pertinent information from General Motors Corp. and union officials.

The normal process for filing claims in a potential labor dispute is that the labor department takes claims, which are filed by individual workers. Information is then obtained from the employer and union officials regarding circumstances surrounding the labor dispute, even though the dispute occurred at another location.

The Official Code of Georgia Annotated Section 34-8-194 provides that the labor department must make a determination on whether the individual is unemployed because of lack of work, or is "participating in or financing or directly interested in the labor dispute, which caused the stoppage of work." In situations involving multiple claimants and complicated issues, the commissioner of labor has the authority to convene a tribunal to decide the issues.

While workers do have a right to file their claim in a local labor department office, labor department officials urge GM workers to file at the union hall as scheduled. The department will have a team of DOL staff on site at the union hall who are well trained to take claims in volume, thus expediting the process.

Labor department officials say there is no advantage to filing a claim ahead of time, before the department receives the pertinent information they need from the company and the union.
