FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STATE'S JOBLESS RATE RISES SLIGHTLY TO 3.8 PERCENT IN MAY,
DESPITE THE ADDITION OF 22,300 NEW JOBS
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that Georgia's unemployment rate in May was 3.8 percent, a slight increase from April's rate of 3.6 percent. The rate in May 1997 was 4.4 percent.
"Although the unemployment rate for May inched upward, it's still the lowest it's been in May for 25 years," said Fullerton. "In fact, we've seen 25-year lows every month this year. The increase was expected because we're entering the summer and the job market is being flooded with college and high school students looking for work. While someone is prospecting for a job, they're counted as unemployed, which pushes the rate up. That's what's happening, and we may experience another slight increase next month when even more students enter the job market.
"However, since Georgia continues to enjoy solid job growth, they should have no problem finding a job," Fullerton continued. In May, the state added 22,300 new jobs, as nonfarm employment rose to 3,730,300. About 4,400 new jobs were added in construction, especially the building trades, among carpenters and other skilled workers. Another 2,800 jobs were added at temporary employment agencies, security firms and computer companies. About 2,500 seasonal jobs were added at recreational centers and amusement parks, such as Six Flags, White Water and American Adventures, while another 2,500 were added at restaurants and bars.
Sixty percent of the jobs added during the month were in the 20-county metro Atlanta area, where nonfarm employment rose by 13,600 to 2,027,300. The other metro areas are as follows:
-- Albany, down 200 from 59,600 to 59,400. -- Athens, up 900 from 74,300 to 75,200.
-- Augusta, down 100 from 195,500 to 195,400. -- Columbus, up 300 from 117,100 to 117,400.
-- Macon, up 300 from 151,200 to 151,500. -- Savannah, up 200 from 134,300 to 134,500.

NOTE: These preliminary estimates were prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, based upon monthly reports submitted by selected employers in the Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Bryan, Chatham and Effingham counties. The estimates include all full- and part-time wage and salary workers who were employed during or received pay for any part of the pay period that includes the twelfth of the month. Proprietors, domestic workers, self-employed persons, unpaid family workers and personnel of the armed forces are excluded. Estimates based on 1997 benchmark.
