FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.I. RECIPIENTS DECLINE BY 4,500 IN MAY

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits decreased by 4,500 from April to May.

The decline in jobless claims came across-the-board in manufacturing, construction, trade and services.

In May, 33,011 people drew $17,079,877 in jobless benefits, down from 37,513 who drew $18,908,400 in April. In May 1997, 40,834 drew $18,735,125.The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $224.

The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from April to May is as follows:

-- Albany, claims down by 76 from 733 to 657.

-- Athens, claims down by 102 from 504 to 402.

-- Atlanta, claims down by 961 from 11,533 to 10,572.

-- Augusta, claims down by 97 from 1,155 to 1,058.

-- Columbus, claims down by 56 from 780 to 724.

-- Macon, claims down by 190 from 1,449 to 1,259.

-- Savannah, claims down by 70 from 864 to 794.
