FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GEORGIA WELFARE-TO-WORK GRANT APPROVED
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today Georgia's Welfare-to-Work plan has been approved by the U.S. Department of Labor, clearing the way for the state to immediately receive a $28.4 million federal grant to help move chronic welfare recipients into jobs. The state plan was developed by Georgia's departments of labor, human resources and technical and adult education.
The grant will be used to fund job opportunities for welfare recipients, including on-the-job training programs and other work experience, as well as child care, transportation and other job retention services.
"I'm pleased that our welfare-to-work plan has been accepted at the national level and the grant money has now been released," said Fullerton. "We're looking forward to working with the Private Industry Councils, which administer the programs in Georgia's 16 service delivery areas, as we work to change the lives of long-term welfare recipients."
The breakdown of the 16 service delivery areas and the amount of funds they will receive are as follows: Northwest Georgia, $1,370,132; Georgia Mountains, $715,796; 3 Rivers Private Industry Council, $1,260,616; Northeast Georgia, $1,106,786; West Central Georgia, $1,075,229; Lower Chattahoochee, $1,204,709; Middle Georgia, $1,723,943; Richmond/Burke counties, $1,288,023; East Central Georgia, $1,006,258; Altamaha/Southeastern, $1,284,086; SeaCoast Workforce Development Board, $1,592,288; Southwest Georgia, $2,028,514; South Georgia, $987,122; City of Atlanta, $2,629,952; DeKalb County, $1,980,248; and Metropolitan Atlanta, $2,894,370.
Georgia is one of 16 states whose Welfare-to-Work plans have been approved by the federal labor department. However, plans from other states are expected to be approved within the next several weeks. Under the Budget Reconciliation Act of 1997, $2.2 billion will be allocated nationwide over a two-year period to states based on their population of poor people and adult recipients of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).
