FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SOUTHEAST GEORGIA'S JOBLESS RATE DECLINES TO 4.4 PERCENT IN APRIL
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that the unemployment rate in the Southeast Georgia region declined to 4.4 percent in April, down from 5.3 percent in March. The area's jobless rate was 4.9 percent in April 1997.
"The unemployment rate in Southeast Georgia declined, as about 250 residents of the area who did not have jobs in March found work in April," said Fullerton. "The area has experienced good job growth during the past year and that has lowered the
unemployment rate."
In April, the region's civilian labor force, which is the number of people working plus those unemployed but actively looking for a job, totaled 62,555. Of that number, 59,774 had jobs and 2,781 did not.
In April 1997, the area's work force totaled 61,694. Of that number, 58,642 were employed and 3,052 were unemployed.
Georgia's unemployment rate declined to 3.5 percent in April, its lowest point in 25 years. The jobless rate was down from 4.0 percent in March and 4.3 percent in April 1997.
