FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.I. RECIPIENTS DECLINE BY 7,400 IN APRIL

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits decreased by 7,400 from March to April.

The decline in jobless claims came across-the-board in manufacturing, construction, trade and services.

In April, 37,513 people drew $18,908,400 in jobless benefits, down from 44,910 who drew $23,936,799 in March. In April 1997, 47,078 drew $23,493,761.The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $224.

The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas from March to April is as follows:

-- Albany, claims down by 182 from 877 to 695.

-- Athens, claims down by 74 from 545 to 471.

-- Atlanta, claims down by 1,551 from 12,446 to 10,895.

-- Augusta, claims down by 183 from 1,237 to 1,054.

-- Columbus, claims down by 68 from 793 to 725.

-- Macon, claims down by 179 from 1,552 to 1,373.

-- Savannah, claims down by 88 from 918 to 830.
