FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LABOR DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES ECONOMIC PUBLICATION

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton today announced release of the inaugural edition of Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators, a monthly publication which will track movement of key economic indicators in the 20county metropolitan statistical area (MSA).

"These data are collected by private and governmental agencies, but have not been published under a single cover," the commissioner said. "Our goal is to do that. I am convinced that it will be a valuable service for the business and professional communities, economic developers, economists, educators, the news media and others who have need for accurate, up-to-date economic data."

The publication is a product of Labor Market Information, a division of the labor department. It includes charts and tables tracking employment, unemployment, unemployment benefits claims, manufacturing wages, residential and nonresidential construction, numbers of flights and passengers and cargo tonnage at Hartsfield International Airport, MARTA and Cobb Community Transit System ridership, hotel occupacy rates and average hotel room charges.

Commissioner Fullerton said Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators will include illustrated news and feature stories on the MSA's consumer price index, its cost of living relative to other metropolitan areas thoughout the nation, total income, per-capita income, average earnings, population growth and a number of other topics.

Data contributors for the first edition of the publication were listed as the Georgia Department of Labor, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. Department of Commerce, F.W. Dodge, McGraw-Hill Construction Information Group, Hartsfield International Airport's Department of Aviation, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit System, Cobb Community Transit System, the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau and the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association.

The commissioner said Georgians who would like to have their names placed on the monthly mailing list for Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators should contact Jim Wynn at Labor Market Information, 148 International Boulevard, Atlanta, GA 30303, telephone (404) 656-3177 or e-mail to jim.wynn@dol.state.ga.us.
