WORKPLACE VIOLENCE CONFERENCE SET FOR MAY 27 IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today the Georgia Department of Labor's fourth annual conference on preventing violence in the workplace has been set for Wednesday, May 27, in north Atlanta.
The one-day seminar will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Atlanta Marriott North Central, 2000 Century Blvd., N.E., off Clairmont Road near Interstate 85. There is a $70 fee for the seminar.
"Violence is the second leading cause of death in the workplace, second only to traffic accidents," Fullerton said. "In fact, violence in the workplace has reached epidemic proportions. Workers are harassed, terrorized and stalked, with all too many of them being seriously injured or killed on the job. In 1996, for example, we had 34 violent job-related deaths in our state. Although that number has decreased from 65 over a two-year period, it's still way too high. And the added cost that workplace violence brings on employers and taxpayers is staggering. The courts have held that employers have a duty to protect their employees from harm and have been held liable for costs. This is especially true if potential workplace violence problems go unchecked. It's no longer possible to ignore the signs of disturbed or disgruntled employees.
"Those who attend the seminar can expect to leave with guidelines and procedures that can be put to work immediately, because the speakers bring with them a wealth of hands-on experience, ranging across the spectrum of violence from stalking in the workplace to defusing threats of violence. They understand the problems, and come prepared to offer solutions that work," Fullerton continued.
Seminar speakers and their topics include: Ralph S. Stone, assistant special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, "Violence in the Workplace -- Recognizing the Red Flags;" Betsy Ramsey, executive director of the Association on Battered Women of Clayton County, "Stalking in the Workplace;" Kevin Hooks, an attorney with Littler Mendelson law firm, "Legal Implications of Violence in the Workplace;" Harold Grimsley, director of the workplace violence protection program for Synovus Financial Corp. in Columbus, "Designing an Effective Workplace Violence Prevention Plan," and Charles D. Stafford, a consultant with Cameron and Associates, a firm that provides employee assistance programs (EAP), "Recovery From Workplace Violence."
