FULLERTON TO SPEAK AT VETERANS PROGRAM IN GRIFFIN MAY 16

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton will be a principal speaker at Griffin's fifth annual "Veterans Celebration in the Park" Saturday, May 16. The event will be held in the city's park, and 500 area veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are expected to attend.

Another featured speaker at the celebration will be Griffin native Brigadier General William Thieleman, commander of Georgia's 48th Brigade, one of the premier U.S. Army National Guard Units in the country.

The celebration is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Labor's Griffin office and the Area Employer Committee, with support from veteran service organizations and area businesses.

"One of the highlights of the celebration will be the Georgia Vietnam Memorial Wall float, which was constructed by the American Legion Post 51 of East Point," said Fletcher Dunn, manager of the labor department's Griffin office. "The wall has the names of about 1,600 Georgians who died in the Vietnam War."

The event kicks off with official ceremonies at 11 a.m. The Griffin-Spalding County High School Junior ROTC unit, a national champion drill team, will perform, and musical entertainment will be provided by a band and soloist. A free lunch will be served, and each veteran will receive a gift. All veterans and their families are invited to attend the festivities in their honor.

Veterans representatives and other personnel from the labor department will be on hand to help veterans looking for jobs and other assistance. Counties included in the Griffin area are Butts, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Pike, Spalding and Upson.

For more information about the celebration, veterans are encouraged to contact Lonnie Acton or Roland Moeller of the labor department's Griffin office at (770) 228-7226.
