FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UNEMPLOYMENT DROPS TO 4.0 PERCENT,

AS STATE ADDS THOUSANDS OF NEW JOBS IN MARCH

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that Georgia's unemployment rate declined to 4.0 percent in March, down from the revised February rate of 4.2 percent. It was 4.7 percent in March 1997.

"The reduction in our unemployment rate came as Georgia experienced an increase of several thousand new jobs," said Fullerton. "We're continuing to enjoy good job growth and economic prosperity. In recent months, we've recorded some of the lowest unemployment rates in a quarter century. The job growth crosses all employment sectors, and with the arrival of Spring and Summer even more jobs will be available."

Across-the-board job increases were recorded in manufacturing, construction, trade and services, as the number of nonfarm jobs rose 27,700 to 3,704,400. Of the new jobs, about 23,000 were in trade and services, at restaurants and hotels, temporary employment agencies, income tax preparation offices, day care centers for children, and job training programs at amusement and recreational centers. Mild weather contributed to an increase of 2,600 new jobs in construction.

Also, 1,800 textile workers who had been laid off in February due to temporary shutdowns returned to work.

Half of the jobs added during the month were in the Atlanta area, where nonfarm employment rose by 13,800 to 2,013,800. The other metro areas are as follows:

-- Albany, unchanged at 59,200.

-- Athens, down by 100 from 74,100 to 74,000.

-- Augusta, down by 100 from 193,100 to 193,000.

-- Columbus, unchanged at 115,900.

-- Macon, up by 600 from 150,600 to 151,200.

-- Savannah, up by 500 from 133,500 to 134,000.
