FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GOLDEN NAMED COMMISSIONER'S CHIEF-OF-STAFF

AT GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton has named Gail C. Golden of Fayette County her chief-ofstaff at the Georgia Department of Labor.

"Gail monitors the day-to-day operations of the department," Fullerton said. "She acts as my liaison with our staff, and is responsible for assisting me in implementing departmental policies and providing quality service to the work force and employers of the state. Gail has excellent coordinating skills, and is extremely well qualified for the position. I'm pleased and fortunate that she has accepted this appointment as my chief-of-staff."

A native Atlantan, Golden, 51, is a graduate of the now-defunct Brown High School in the city's West End. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from Georgia State University. In 1968, she was named that university's most outstanding senior, after being listed in "Who's Who in American College and Universities, and having her short stories published in the National Scholastic Quarterly.

Golden joined the labor department in 1968 as an employment counselor in the East Point office, which later became the South Metro Atlanta office. That job led Golden to a coordinator's position in 1973 with the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) program, the forerunner of the current Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) program.

In 1975, Golden directed a national multi-media project to improve the image of state employment service agencies throughout the U.S. That put her on a fast track to head Georgia's first State Employer Committee, an outgrowth of the national project. A decade later, Georgia won the first National Employer Council Award for outstanding state coordination. Employer committees are comprised of local business leaders working with labor department offices to better serve the needs of employers and job seekers alike.

Golden is a volunteer at local animal shelters in the metro area, and is a member of the Atlanta Humane Society and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She lives in Tyrone with her husband, Robert G. Golden, a native of Acworth.
