MARTIN NAMED DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF STATE LABOR DEPARTMENT

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton has named Milton L. Martin, a life-long resident of DeKalb County, the deputy commissioner of employment and training for the Georgia Department of Labor.

Martin, 51, is the son of the late J. Lamar Martin, DeKalb County's sheriff from 1964-1973. His mother, Lucia Martin, lives in Rockdale County.

"Milton Martin is one of the most knowledgeable and efficient professionals in our nation's employment security system," said Fullerton. "During the 27 years he's worked with this department, Milton has done a superb job. From time-to-time we've called on him to handle extremely important projects, and he's always come through for us. I'm pleased and fortunate that Milton accepted this appointment as deputy commissioner of labor."

A graduate of the now-defunct Bass High School, Martin holds a bachelor of science degree in industrial management from Georgia Tech. He worked as a manufacturing engineer at Lockheed-Georgia Company in Marietta from 19681971, when he joined the labor department as a management analyst.

Martin worked his way through the ranks of employment service to become assistant director of Labor Information Systems (LIS), the forerunner of the agency's Labor Market Information (LMI) division, which compiles and disseminates labor market data.

In 1983, Martin was tapped by then-Gov. Joe Frank Harris to serve on the Governor's Job Training Partnership Task Force. Two years later, he was named LIS director. In 1987, he received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Service in State Government and was appointed an assistant commissioner of the department in 1991. In 1994, he was named to head a review of the nation's labor market information system, and recommendations from that review have been implemented nationwide.

Martin's other responsibilities with the department include serving on the advisory committee for EXCEL, the agency's leadership program, and working on special projects such as Georgia Gain, a study of the state's merit system. His hobbies include photography and outdoor activities such as hiking, running and cycling.
