STATE LOSES 76,800 JOBS IN JANUARY, MOSTLY ARE SEASONAL IN NATURE

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today that Georgia lost 76,800 jobs during January, as nonfarm employment declined to 3,654,300, down from 3,731,100 in December.

Fullerton said that while the job losses came across-the-board in construction, manufacturing, trade and services, most were seasonal in nature."January is the month when the greatest number of job losses occur during the year," she said. "That's because some people who work in construction and on other outside jobs are temporarily laid off due to inclement weather conditions. The number of lost jobs may seem high, especially when you couple them with the after-holiday layoffs in retail trade and at temporary employment agencies. But almost all of these are temporary layoffs, so the job picture will improve in the coming months, as workers return to their jobs."

Retailers and private employment agencies laid off about 50,000 seasonal workers during the month, while jobs in construction and manufacturing declined by almost 8,000. Yet, even with the seasonal job losses, the state has added 136,300 new jobs in the past year. And nonfarm employment is up by 3.9 percent from 3,518,000 in January 1997.

In January 1998, more than half of the job losses -- 41,200 -- occurred in metro Atlanta, as employment declined from 2,028,000 in December to 1,986,800.

The other metro areas and their job losses from December to January are as follows:

-- Albany, down by 1,300 from 60,900 to 59,600.

-- Athens, down by 1,500 from 73,200 to 71,700.

-- Augusta, down by 2,500 from 194,500 to 192,000.

-- Columbus, down by 1,800 from 117,200 to 115,400.

-- Macon, down by 1,600 from 151,600 to 150,000.

-- Savannah, down by 800 from 134,100 to 133,300.
