FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.I. RECIPIENTS RISE BY ALMOST 30,000 IN JANUARY
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Marti Fullerton said today the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits increased by almost 30,000 from December to January.
Most of the increase in jobless claims came among seasonal workers in construction, trade and service-related industries.
In January, 78,406 people drew $25,662,373 in jobless benefits, up from 48,506 who drew $22,583,525 in December. In January 1997, 91,073 drew $30,185,598. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $224.
The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas in January is as follows:
-- Albany, claims up by 50 from 675 in December to 725.
-- Athens, claims up by 28 from 527 in December to 555.
-- Atlanta, claims up by 1,086 from 12,260 in December to 13,346.
-- Augusta, claims up by 119 from 1,328 in December to 1,447.
-- Columbus, claims down by 60 from 893 in December to 833.
-- Macon, claims up by 119 from 1,292 in December to 1,411.
-- Savannah, claims up by 76 from 973 in December to 1,049.
