COATS AMERICAN RECEIVES OUTSTANDING EMPLOYER AWARD

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner David Poythress announced today that Coats American of Thomasville has been presented a 1997 Success Track Outstanding Employer Award.

"Coats American's goal is to provide a service and product that are simply, 'the best,' and to do that, its employees have got to be able to give their best," Poythress said. "Since that often involves upgrading skills and education, the company has an impressive commitment to giving the financial assistance to make that possible. Employees can attend a technical school or university through a tuition reimbursement plan, and that commitment to education extends to children of employees, who may receive as much as $8,000 in college scholarships."

The Outstanding Employer Award is presented jointly by the Georgia Department of Labor and Georgia Public Television (GPTV), which co-produce Success Track, a weekly television program about career and economic issues. The award was created in 1995 to recognize employers who are leaders in providing educational and job-training opportunities and benefit packages which enhance the careers of their employees.

Coats American, which manufacturers a million miles of industrial thread each week, provides an extensive employee benefits and retirement package, and a nurse conducts on-site health screenings for employees. The company is a principal contributor to the local United Way and has been named the area's large industry of the year for community service.

Coats American and 10 other award recipients were featured in a special episode of Success Track entitled Investing in People in December. The special will be shown again in the Spring.

The other recipients are Ayres Corp., Albany; Crown Crafts of Calhoun; Synthetic Industries, Chickamauga; W.C. Bradley Co. and Synovus Financial Corp., Columbus; Collins and Aikman, Dalton; Roper Corp. of LaFayette; Shorewood Packaging Corp. of Georgia, LaGrange; Armstrong World Industries, Macon; and Pepsi Cola of Rome.

Success Track is broadcast Thursdays at 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. over the nine-station GPTV network.
