GEORGIA ADDS 25,400 NEW JOBS IN DECEMBER,
AS STATE SETS NEW NONFARM EMPLOYMENT RECORD
ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner David Poythress said today that Georgia added 25,400 new jobs in December, as nonfarm employment rose to a record high 3,735,200, up from 3,709,800 in November.
In a year's time, the state has added 133,100 new jobs, up by 3.7 percent from 3,602,100 in December 1996.
"We continue to set records for job growth," Poythress said. "December marked the sixth consecutive month that we set employment records, and 1997 makes six straight years of job expansion. Our consistent job growth actually began in January of 1992. Since that time, more than 800,000 new jobs have been created in Georgia."
Better than half of the state's job growth during 1997 came in metro Atlanta, as 76,700 new jobs were added during the past 12 months. Metro Atlanta hit a record employment of 2,027,200 in December, up by 3.9 percent, from 1,950,500 at this same time last year.
Of the seven major metropolitan areas in the state, only Augusta lost jobs during the year. Manufacturing and construction jobs declined in the area, as employment dropped by 900, from 197,200 to 196,300.
The other metro areas and their job increases from December 1996 to December 1997 are as follows:
-- Albany, up by 2,000, or 3.3 %, from 60,100 to 62,100.
-- Athens, up by 700, or 1.0%, from 73,100 to 73,800.

-- Columbus, up by 3,100, or 2.7%, from 113,000 to 116,100. -- Macon, up by 3,200, or 2.2%, from 148,800 to 152,000. -- Savannah, up by 1,600, or 1.2%, from 133,700 to 135,300. Labor market data are now available on the Georgia Department of Labor home page at www.dol.state.ga.us
