U.I. RECIPIENTS RISE BY 8,900 IN DECEMBER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner David Poythress said today the number of people in Georgia drawing unemployment insurance benefits increased by about 8,900 from November to December.

Most of the increase in jobless claims came among people who work outside, such as those employed in agriculture and construction.

In December, 48,506 people drew $22,583,525 in jobless benefits, up from 39,615 who drew $17,513,046 in November. In December 1996, 58,289 drew $28,040,965. The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit is $224.

The number of people filing claims for unemployment insurance benefits in the state's major metropolitan areas in December is as follows:

-- Albany, claims up by nine from 653 in November to 662.

-- Athens, claims up by 80 from 436 in November to 516.

-- Atlanta, claims down by 522 from 12,545 in November to 12,023.

-- Augusta, claims up by 33 from 1,244 in November to 1,277.

-- Columbus, claims down by 23 from 898 in November to 875.

-- Macon, claims up by 51 from 1,183 in November to 1,234.

-- Savannah, claims up by 19 from 940 in November to 959.
