Once the heart of the community for the historic Jekyll Island Club employees, Pier Road is now the heart of unparalleled shopping opportunities enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. This quaint, tabby-paved neighborhood of soft yellow cottages located in the Historic District still looks as it did when the millionaires vacationed here long ago. However, instead of providing private employee quarters, a dinning hall, or a general store, today this easily perused avenue is home to eight unique and exclusive shops.
Bird watchers and outdoor enthusiast enjoy "Wild Birds Unlimited" with their array of top quality feeders, houses, water features, wild bird foods and unique nature-themed gifts that delight novice and experienced birders alike. "The Commissary" carries its own private label of Georgia-made food specializing in jams, jellies, BBQ sauces, hot sauces, and salad dressings, as well as offering lemonade, cheese sticks, and daily fresh-baked cookies. "Just By Hand," located behind "The Commissary," carries all sorts of handcrafted gifts of glass, pottery, textile, and exquisite jewelry from local artisans. Featuring Vera Bradley and the Brighton Collection, "The Island House" has everything from shells to

pottery and photography. "The Trading Post" specializes in contemporary sterling silver jewelry for yourself or that special someone. Enjoy Christmas year round in "Santa's Christmas Shoppe" with Byers Choice Carolers, Fontanini, Clothique, Polonaise and a dazzling array of Christmas ornaments. Don't neglect to treat your sweet tooth at "The Island Sweets Shoppe" that serves up old-fashioned candy, hand-dipped ice cream, fine chocolates and freshly made fudge.
The newest shop to open, "The Cottage," offers a unique collection of exquisite home decorative items featuring statues, planters, fans, and one-of-a-kind pieces for every home. The sense of old fashioned community on Pier Road lives on today and is what "The Cottage" owner Jo Ann Simkins claims brought her back to Jekyll Island. A previous resident and long time island visitor, Jo Ann believes the camaraderie between shop owners, the Jekyll Island Authority, and the community provides every visitor with unique opportunities to find treasures in a historic setting. Please stroll down the tabby path to visit the quaint yellow cottages and experience their unparalleled shopping experiences for yourself.

Tennis is a game of preparation for a good first move. In simplest terms, tennis is about being ready and making your opponent late or hurried getting to the ball or executing strokes. Since we can't control what our opponent is doing, we should focus on our own early preparation.
Tennis is a first move sport. What a tennis player does first, determines the strength and efficiency of the shot. From an athletic ready position, the initial pivot or torso rotation loads the core muscles of the body. This is like stretching a rubber band, the bigger the pivot, the more elastic energy the muscles store and then can release. The idea is to get the racquet in position with this early & complete torso rotation move, and then let it go with the stroke.
The ready position in tennis requires that you start facing the net with the racquet centered so that you are equally ready for the ball to come to either side of your body. From there, you would: read which side of your body the ball is coming to, rotate the hips and shoulders to get the racquet back and then release or unwind the torso to hit. If you watch a professional play, they read and rotate exceptionally early and release the torso to hit the ball.
Problems occur when tennis players don't read which side the ball is coming to and therefore don't rotate or pivot their bodies in time. The result is they are unable to release or unwind the torso properly forcing them to contort, steer, or "be armsy" just to put the strings on the ball. The best players in tennis focus on early preparation for a good first move and are ready to READ-ROTATE & RELEASE.

is natural process has happened on Jekyll Island for centuries. e Georgia Sea Turtle Center, a department of the Jekyll Island Authority, joins the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and other organizations in its commitment to protecting these threatened and endangered species. One of the most remarkable natural phenomena occurring on beaches is the nesting ritual of the loggerhead sea turtle. Jekyll's sandy beachfront traditionally has a signi cant amount of nesting activity. e rare opportunity to witness this ritual on a dark summer night is both an honor and a great responsibility. Sought by predators and susceptible to dehydration, sea turtle hatchlings have only a one in four thousand

chance of survival at best. Human activities can further reduce that chance. By following the simple guidelines below, you can do your part to ensure the survival of these magni cent creatures: Turn o or shield lights near the beaches. Arti cial beach lighting can inhibit female sea turtles from nesting and disorient hatchlings. Most beachfront lighting issues can be addressed by turning o all unnecessary lights, repositioning or modifying light
xtures, or closing blinds and drapes. Remove furniture and other items from the beach and dune area, when not in use, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Items le on the beach including beach furniture, toys and trash may provide

barriers to nesting or result in entanglement and predation of hatchlings. Level all sandcastles and ll any holes dug during play. ese are ne during the day but may pose additional hazards at night. Please leave the beach as you found it, so that sea turtles and hatchlings are not hindered on their way to nest or to the water. Pick up all trash. Sea turtles mistakenly eat debris, especially plastic, which results in death. Honor the leash law. All dogs on the beach must be on a leash and not allowed to disturb nesting turtles or hatchlings. Sign up for a Turtle or Nest Walk with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center!
Beachfront property owners should make sure that their properties are in compliance with the Jekyll Island marine turtle protection ordinances and ensure that arti cial lighting from the property is not illuminating the beach. An easy way to test if your property is in compliance is to stand on the beach on a moonless night and look seaward. If a shadow is cast towards the water, there is a potential

to deter female turtles from nesting or disorient hatchlings as they emerge from the nest. If you can see the bulb of a xture from the beach, it is a problem.
We look forward to another successful sea turtle nesting season and hope to uphold Jekyll's reputation as having one of the darkest and most "turtle friendly" beaches in the state. We ask for your continued cooperation by observing appropriate ordinances and regulations while here.
Violations should be reported to the Jekyll Island State Park Authority at (912) 635-2930, Georgia State Patrol (912) 635-2303 or the Georgia Department of Natural Resources at (800) 2- SAVE ME.

HISTORY

THE FATHERS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE By Andrea Marroquin

This year marks the passage of a century since a small party, headed by

Senator Nelson W. Aldrich, first envisioned America's modern banking system from

Jekyll Island, Georgia. They are the Fathers of the Federal Reserve.

The Panic of 1907 made the need for banking reform clear. That fall, the banking industry faced cash shortages due to a late harvest and overspeculation. Then, the Knickerbocker Trust Company, one of America's largest banks, failed. Worried depositors withdrew millions from savings. Many banks ran low on money. They sold stocks and called in loans. The chain reaction caused stock market crashes, foreclosures, and bank failures. In those hard times, there was no central bank in America. Jekyll Island Club Member J. P. Morgan personally led the mission to bail out the banks, New York City, and the New York Stock Exchange. Morgan raised $25 million dollars in 15 minutes to keep the stock mar-

ket open and restore confidence. He said "If people will keep their money in the banks, everything will be all right." Senator Aldrich declared "Something has got to be done. We may not always have Pierpont Morgan with us to meet a banking crisis."
Congress passed the Aldrich-Vreeland Act in 1908. It provided for emergency currency and created the National Monetary Commission to study banking reform. Aldrich was named chairman. "It was his avowed intention to become the father of a modern banking and currency system for this country," the New York Times reported.
For two years the commission studied

European banking practices, but formed no clear plan for stabilizing America's economy.
In November of 1910, the "strangest, most secret expedition in the history of American finance" was arranged to develop that plan away from public scrutiny. Using the excuse of a "duck hunting trip," an influential group of politicians, financiers, and economists retreated to Jekyll Island for a full week. In this place of seclusion, they drafted a bill for Congress without interruptions from reporters and daily life. Members of the expedition included Senator Aldrich, his personal secretary; Henry P. Davison from J.P. Morgan & Co.; Paul Warburg of Kuhn, Loeb & Co; Frank A. Vanderlip, President of National City Bank; Abram Piatt Andrew Jr., Assistant Secretary of the Treasury; Benjamin Strong, Vice President of Banker's Trust of New York; and Charles D. Norton, President of the First National Bank of New York. The group headed to Jekyll Island "as unobtrusively as possible." Hoping to remain unidentified, they left their last names behind them. Davison and Vanderlip disguised even their first names, calling each other "Wilbur" and "Orville," after the Wright brothers. For their secrecy, they were called "The First Name Club."
On Jekyll Island, they "worked morning noon and night." .They celebrated Thanksgiving on the island and left with a bank reform bill in hand. The Aldrich Plan called for the creation of a central bank with regional branches, able to make emergency loans to member banks and print money.
Aldrich believed his bank reform legislation would assist every member of society: "The proposed reform affects not only the vitals of the business interests and the bankers of the country, but even more so the farmers . . [and] the wage earners . . . who, under our present monetary system, have absolutely no means of safeguarding themselves against loss."

The Aldrich Plan was never enacted, but it laid the groundwork for the Federal Reserve Act, which became law on December 23, 1913. The Federal Reserve Act resulted in a government-appointed Federal Reserve Board overseeing 12 Federal Reserve Banks. Member banks could obtain discounted loans. The U.S. Treasury would manage the cash supply.
Aldrich's contributions to the Federal Reserve Act were publicly recognized, although the other authors of the Aldrich Plan remained a secret for many years. The New York Times declared that "Nelson W. Aldrich will in financial history be known as the Father of the Federal Reserve Banking System."
Warburg was appointed to the first Federal Reserve Board. Strong became Governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Both Aldrich and Davison became Jekyll Island Club Members.
To discover how other influential Jekyll Island Club members and guests shaped the nation, visit the Jekyll Island Museum at 100 Stable Road. (912) 635-4036

Local award winning author Pamela Bauer Mueller tells the story of this little coastal Georgia island and its early inhabitants that shaped world events. She brilliantly uses the voices of those who worked for the most wealthy and powerful families in American society to tell you about their families' trials and tribulations. Surnames that frequented Jekyll Island from 1888 to 1942 included the Astors, Rockefellers, Morgans, Pulitzers and Goodyears.

KEEPINGTHEBEACHBEAUTIFUL
By Nancy Kring Rowan
Beautiful Jekyll Island, one of Georgia's Barrier Islands, features nine miles of unspoiled beaches. They are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, leisurely walks or invigorating jogs but only if we keep them clean. Universally 94% of people identify lier as a major environmental problem and yet they still liter. Carelessly discarded garbage affects every member of society. It costs communities money, threatens public health, can be a fire hazard, can harm our waterways and kill wildlife. That's why we ask you to be a part of the solution and make a positive contribution to our island by keeping our beaches beautiful. Use trash and recycling containers provided at the public beach access areas. Always take a pet bag, available at all beach crossovers, when walking your dog. Cigaree bus are the most common item liering beaches world wide so please dispose of them properly. And remember leave no trace -what you carry on to the beach - carry off at the end of your visit. The 4th of July is just around the corner and it is the biggest beach holiday in America and the dirtiest. Join us in celebrating Clean Beach Week July 3-10. This is "Earth Day" for beaches celebrating a healthy beach lifestyle that recognize and embrace the benefits of beaches. So enjoy Jekyll Island's beaches to the fullest. Get active everyday by playing, surfing, fishing, walking or reading during your beach visit but only leave your footprints behind.

Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/ Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency, medical response team Beachgoers pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.
We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.

Flash Foods of Waycross, GA is building a modern gas station with a convenience store and a Dairy Queen "Grill and Chill" quickserve restaurant. e new gas station will feature a custom architectural design that matches the Jekyll Island design guidelines. e project also limits impact on trees and only a few trees that were already in poor health have been removed. e standard "Drive ru" window has been eliminated from the design to reduce tree impact and make for a more pedestrian-friendly site.
e many large live oaks that create a wonderful canopy at this site will not be impacted. As this project begins,
