JEKYLL ISLAND EVENT

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

SOMETHING TO SHELL-E-BRATE
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day event was held as a grassroots effort to promote environmental awareness and conservation.

Now, 40 years later, light-hearted and creative earth celebrations continue across the planet.
Nowhere will this be more evident than at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center when the third annual Shell-e-brate Earth Day Family Festival takes place on April 17 from 12 4 PM. The festivities combine creative and informative activities for all ages with our love of sea turtles. In addition to being joined by other conservation -minded organizations, there is an added bonus for 2010 as the Georgia Sea Turtle Center collaborates with the Georgia Conservancy's FareWhale event to promote awareness of the endangered Northern Right Whale. Turtles and whales together- OH MY!

As a way to help everyone "go green" and follow our example of conservation, riding your bicycle to the event will earn $1 off admission to the afternoon festivities. We'll also be collecting old cell phones and chargers, printer ink cartridges, CROCS footwear and worn-out crayons for recycling as a way to take care of the only planet we've got.
Please join in the festivities at Shell-e-brate Earth Day Family Festival. The turtles fully endorse this celebration!

Last year, over 550 guests flooded the front lawn of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to take part in the fun. Once again, kids at heart can try their hand at the Recycle Toss game, craft handmade paper, paint a masterpiece at the Styrofoam Plate Press, color a Wearable Paper Bag Carapace, hang out with "Scute," and decorate a Recycled Journal. New event highlights will include live stage performances and announcing the winner of the Glynn County Litter Critter Art Contest (see below)!

SEEN A LITTER CRITTER LATELY?
Designed by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, the Litter Critter Contest encourages local Glynn County 3rd graders to be eco-friendly and sea turtle friendly by creating sea turtles out of recycled materials, As part of a county-wide Sea Turtle Education Project (STEP) program, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center is working with elementary school art teachers, classroom teachers, and students to create a sea turtle models from "trash." Imagination abounds!
These recycled sea turtles will be on display at the St. Simons Island Library March 23 April 4th, at the Brunswick Library April 5- 10th and at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center April 12- 17th. We invite you to visit these locations to vote on your favorite Litter Critter. Contest finalists will be announced at the 2010 Shell-e-brate Earth Day Event.

HOTEL CO-OP
A FAMILY REUNION AT THE JEKYLL ISLAND CLUB HOTEL, "IT'S ALMOST LIKE COMING HOME"
When winter is just a memory and warm breezes remind the family of good times on Jekyll Island, it's hard to get the car packed and down the driveway soon enough.

The Jekyll Island Club Hotel each year welcomes families from across the country and many from abroad. This time of year, the landscapers have nurtured the lawns and gardens, the chefs have created exciting new menus for the season, and the accommodations have the charm and appeal of a life of elegant leisure. Special packages have been created to accommodate families on a budget.
The Jekyll Island Club Hotel is the ideal location for a family getaway or reunion. Situated on this beautiful barrier island with ten miles of ocean beach, the hotel offers an adventure opportunity for every member of the family.
The Grand Dining Room and the Courtyard at Crane restaurants offer gourmet dining. The kid-friendly favorites are Caf Solterra, a bakery/ delicatessen and the Poolside Grill (open seasonally).

In this historic landmark setting, the choices for customizing a family reunion are many. For example, several cottages may be reserved for the exclusive use of the family. One of these, Cherokee Cottage, has ten rooms and suites plus a spacious area for the family to gather for those memorable, cozy evenings together. The Sans Souci building, which has 24 rooms and suites, also has two beautifully appointed hospitality rooms. Crane Cottage, an Italian Renaissance structure, has 13 rooms and suites as well as the Courtyard at Crane restaurant for alfresco and indoor dining.
Arrangements may be made for volleyball on the lawn or beach, a croquet tournament, or a shrimp boat excursion. The Hotel also has a photographer for hire (available by appointment) to take family photographs and group portraits.

Betty N. Mori, who has coordinated her family's reunion here, described her experience in a recent interview.
We have had several family reunions, five or six, at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Several generations of us gather for this important tradition.
Many times, we've gathered at Thanksgiving. Family members of all ages begin appearing at the hotel on Wednesday night from various parts of the country. They bring their little children, and one family member is in his mid 80's. For some, it's the only visit of the year, and we're so very glad to see one another.

This year it was my turn to coordinate the event at the Club, and we expected 60-100 people. The hotel has some wonderful, professional people who helped with everything we needed. From Sales to Catering, they handled it graciously. Our Thanksgiving dinner in the Club Ballroom was, well... wonderful. Our sales representative suggested the hospitality suite in the Sans Souci building as a central meeting spot, and it was lovely.
At the last reunion, we organized a trip on a shrimp boat, and we had such fun. Later some of the family took a nature walk while others visited the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. I just cannot think of a better place to have a family reunion.

GOLFTIPS
SAND SHOTS EASIEST SHOT IN GOLF
By Steve Godley, Director of Instruction, Jekyll Island Golf Club Georgia Head Professional, Bird Golf Academy
"Sand shots are the easiest shot in golf," is a statement I have made in clinics only to hear sarcastic responses like sure, and yeah right! But in reality, no truer words were spoken. And why is it the easiest shot in golf? It is the only shot where you are not trying to strike the ball. The ball simply floats out on a pillow of sand.
In defense of amateur players, a lot of their bunker problems and mistakes stem from being taught improperly. Not saying that my method is the only one, but I have seen it work time-and time-again. Golfers learn that for a basic bunker shot, we open the clubface, open our stance, place the ball in the middle of the stance and attempt to strike the sand 2 3 inches behind the ball. However, "hitting behind the ball" does not make sense to most people so my method is a little different. Yes, we want to have an open clubface and stance to add loft, but instead of setting up on the ball as you would a fairway shot, set up to the spot where you would like to "strike the sand" as if the ball were not there. Take a normal swing striking your mark and take the ball out on a pillow of sand.
Other than the set-up, amateur players make other mistakes. Primarily, is deceleration of a chip or pitch shot. They take the club too far back and slow down through the hitting area. Bunker shots are nothing but a pitch shot in the sand. The technique for a bunker shot and a pitch shot is a short backswing into a full follow through. One of the reasons for the deceleration is because it is a short shot. Our mind tells us that it does not take a lot of force to move the ball a short distance, so when a long backswing is executed we slow the club trying to ease the force. The club only needs to go back waist high. This way, there is acceleration through the shot and our prime objective of getting the ball out of the bunker is accomplished. Just as in all short game shots, the club head should never pass the hands. The hands must be leading all of the way through the shot. Not finishing the entire swing is another mistake that is commonly made. Because it is a relatively short shot, players tend to stop the motion once the club impacts the sand. Everyone seems to be afraid of hitting the ball too far. Golfers will stop their swing, forgetting the prime objective getting the ball out of the bunker
Another shot from a bunker that we must address is from a fairway bunker. To properly play this particular shot, choose a club that will allow you to advance the ball the greatest distance without hitting the top lip of the bunker. Proper execution of this shot requires that the ball be played in the back of your stance, off the right foot. The reason for this is to strike the ball before the sand. Use no body motion for this shot; it is an arm swing only.
So now, you see sand shots are the easiest shots in golf. These basic bunker shots will help to extricate you from this hazard in the fewest number of strokes. Take the time to practice and improve your shots and other areas of your game by contacting your PGA Professional for help.
Jekyll Island offers individual lessons, Corporate and group clinics, as well as 1, 2, and 3-day schools. Weekly clinics are conducted through April. For more information and instruction, call 912-635-2368.

HISTORY FEATURE

WEDDINGS OF THE CLUB ERA By Andrea Marroquin
Throughout the Jekyll Island Club Era, high society came together to wish couples joy in their unions and share enchanting moments.

Ceremonies varied from intimate occasions to much larger events. When two Jekyll Island Club families united through the marriage of James J. Hill's daughter, Ruth, to Anson McCook Beard, apologies were offered, stating "Only 130 guests were invited, the bride desiring a quiet wedding."
Then as now, wedding gowns reflected the bride's personal style. J.P. Morgan Jr.'s bride donned a gown edged with white ostrich tips, while Robert Goelet's bride wore a train trimmed in swans down. Gowns were often white, but not always. Rose-colored silk and blue velvet trimmed with sable were each worn by brides of Club families.

Hats were worn by brides and bridesmaids alike, trimmed with plumes, ribbons, roses, or veilss. Florence, the daughter of Club Member Richard Teller Crane Jr., married adventurer William Albert Robinson in 1933. She wore a veil of Brussels point lace that was presented to Empress Elizabeth of Austria at Crown Prince Rudolph's birth. Ruth Hill wore a ruby and emerald necklace from her future husband. Sarah Cantine Shrady wore a diamond necklace from Edwin Gould, with an attached diamond and pearl pendant from his father. When Ethel Geraldine Rockefeller married Marcellus Hartley Dodge, however, she wore no jewels. Reporters stated "The halls could have

glittered with rubies and diamonds of the Worlds renown but the beautiful characterization of simplicity prevailed."
The gentlemen also displayed a flair for formal fashions. Griswold Lorillard, the son of Club Member Pierre Lorillard IV, started a trend by wearing a tailcoat without tails, rather like a "mess jacket," to a formal function. Dr. McAlpin, marrying Emma Rockefeller, also excited comment in his wedding day attire, wearing gray trousers, gray suede gloves, and a black frock coat.
Vocal and instrumental music set the mood for both ceremonies and receptions. Selections included: "Bridal Procession" and "Bridal Chorus" from "Lohengrin" by Wagner; Wagner's "Tannhuser March;" "O Perfect Love" by Barnby; selections from Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet;" and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" from "Midsummer Night's Dream."
Receptions varied from sumptuous wedding breakfasts to buffet suppers with dancing to follow. Florence Crane's wedding cake was especially memorable. The lower layer, served "in a remarkable state of freshness," had been preserved in rare wines from her mother's wedding 28 years before.
Floral decorations were stunning. Edwin Gould and Sarah Cantine Shrady exchanged vows before a towering screen of boxwood studded with geraniums, chrysanthemums, and roses. Emma Rockefeller and Dr. McAlpin

married amidst thousands of American Beauty roses, bridesmaid's roses, and ferns and beneath a "canopy of white orchids and lilies of the valley, and in a bower formed of greens." For Joseph Pulitzer's daughter, greenery, poinsettia, and holly formed the backdrop.
The only known wedding of a Club Member's family to take place on Jekyll Island, itself, occurred at Christmas. Charles Stewart Maurice's daughter Emily married Charles Whitney Dall in Faith Chapel on December 19, 1911. Emily's brother, Albert, arrived with his own bride in time to attend and enjoy a honeymoon on the island. Following the ceremony, a wedding breakfast was served at Hollybourne. The next season Emily stayed with her in-laws, but wrote happily in 1913 that "Mrs. Dall vows it's my duty to go to Jekyl this year for Christmas! Hurrah!"
Frank Miller Gould loved Jekyll Island as a honeymoon destination. He brought a bride to Jekyll Island twice. In 1924, an hour before the wedding, he and Florence Amelia Bacon beckoned witnesses to attend an impromptu ceremony. The newlyweds arrived on Jekyll Island two months later, staying at Chichota. They soon built Villa Marianna, their own winter vacation home on the island. The couple returned frequently, once arriving on Valentine's Day. In 1944, Gould stepped ashore on Jekyll Island with a second bride, Helen Roosen Curran. They honeymooned at Villa Marianna.

3DUNLQJ)HH The Parking Fee for entry to Jekyll Island is used to support conservation and stewardship of the natural and cultural resources of the Island. Special projects funded by the parking fee include beach crossovers, bicycle path extensions, and picnic area improvements. Annual decals can be purchased at the greeting station.

Due to the prolonged cold weather along the Eastern seaboard this winter, many of the new arrivals are here because of "cold-stunning." The cold snap affected thousands of turtles, from New England to Florida, and treatment facilities for turtles are scarce. Despite having more turtles in the hospital than

ever, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center felt the need to assist. Working with other agencies and organizations, they are now treating over two dozen sea turtles with various injuries or illnesses, many of which are new cold-stunned patients.
Cold-stunning is similar to hypothermia in humans and occurs when the ectothermic (cold-blooded) sea turtles are exposed to water temperatures below 50 degrees. They become lethargic, unable to eat, and their immune systems become compromised which can have negative implications several months later such as pneumonia and bone infection.

Depending on the severity of the cold-stunning and the turtle's overall health, they may be able to be released relatively soon after treatment. Other times, they will require months of rehabilitation.
While visiting Jekyll Island, be sure to visit the Georgia Sea Turtle

Rehabilitating cold-stunned sea turtles can be very effective but it is time-consuming and costly. The turtles must be re-warmed slowly, provided fluids, have blood levels monitored, and given antibiotics.

Center where you can learn about sea turtles in the exhibit gallery, hear educational presentations, observe treatments and visit our current patients in the rehabilitation pavilion. Your visit will warm the hearts of the "cold-stunned" turtles helping them on their road to recovery.

JEKYLL ISLAND ARTS ASSOCIATION

APRIL EXHIBIT By Betty Rasmussen

The Jekyll Island Arts Association will not rest after their busy time with the Arts Festival but will be mounting a new show in the Gallery right away. March 19 to April 19, will feature Debra Yaun's exquisite colored pencil art and the beautiful pottery of the Jekyll Island Pottery Guild.
Debra grew up in Tampa, Florida, where as a child she found she had a knack for drawing people. She painted a few commissioned portraits in high school, including the daughter of one of her teachers. In Sarasota, she graduated from Ringling School of Art and worked at Busch Gardens every summer as a quick sketch artist. After meeting her husband, an advertising web designer, at Ringling they moved to Atlanta.

Debra has worked as a fashion illustrator, layout artist, a graphic artist and an art director. She quit working after her first child was born and returned to painting seriously in 1990. She started drawing and painting from photos of her own children and friends children, often late into the night. Debra displayed her work in a local library and at art shows but found donating pieces to local fundraising auctions was her best exposure. Initially most of her clients were from Gainesville and Buford, but now she has clients from all over the Atlanta area due to word of mouth. Debra has received many awards, has written quite a few books, and designed colored pencil and watercolor kits. Whether she's drawing or painting animals or people, Debra's work has an exactness that lends itself to pencil. Every hair is rendered, every detail articulated.
The Jekyll Island Pottery Guild has many, many talented artists whose work has graced the shelves of the Shop of Goodyear Cottage for a very long time. It is always with great anticipation that we look forward to the times when they move into the Gallery to display their talents as the 3-D part of the Gallery show for the month. Expect some beautiful and useful pieces of the highest quality from the greatest artists in the Southeast.

date I March 19 to April 19 hours I Monday Friday, 12 Noon 4 p.m. Saturday/Sunday 10 a.m. 4 p.m. location I Goodyear Cottage, Historic District price I Admission is always free.

INSPIRED BY JEKYLL ISLAND
THE BEACH AT NIGHT
By Charles Van Buren
The sound of the rolling surf, Is sweet music to my ear, If it would not spoil the mood, I would stand up and cheer,
The moonlight on the rolling sea, To me is an awesome sight, I feel as though I've gone to heaven, When I walk the beach at night,
Sometimes when I watch the sea, Light flashes as the waves part, Greetings from a lonesome jellyfish, Saying hello to my heart,
Walking along, I can look up, And see the stars so bright, They're the beacon to light my way, When I walk the beach at night,
As I stroll down by the shore, I get the feel of contentment, It seems to take away my cares, And my feelings of resentment,
The breeze blowing across the sand, Seems to make all things seem right, I'm alone but I don't care, When I walk the beach at night.

Jekyll Island's beach is open
year-round; swim at your own risk. Sand dunes are natural buffers which protect inland areas from tides, winds and storms. Use crossovers for beach access and avoid walking on sand dunes. State law prohibits cutting sea oats. Take only empty shells and dead sand dollars.
Help preserve Jekyll's natural wonders

Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/ Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency, medical response team Beachgoers pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.
We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.
