JEKYLL ISLAND ARTS ASSOCIATION'S

2010 ARTS FESTIVAL By Nancy Kring Rowan
The smell of oil paints and potter's dust is in the air and Jekyll Island's Historic District is abuzz with creative energies.

The annual Jekyll Island Arts Association's Arts Festival is coming to the island the weekend of March 12th14th from 10 AM to 4 PM on the grounds of Goodyear Cottage. This free annual event, co-chaired by Kate Hamer and Carol Healy, is a three-day extravaganza highlighting the works of many of the Association's 432 members coming from all over North America. It is also a shopping mecca for all art lovers.

Approximately thirty-four years ago, the annual Arts Festival took flight as a way for the Jekyll Island Arts Association's members to submit their art for judging and present an exhibit to the public. This festival has evolved into an unequaled event consisting of a committee of 35 people, nearly one hundred volunteers and attracting over 3,000 visitors yearly. With so many high-caliber artists participating, the Arts Festival promises to be competitive and feature an exhibit of the highest quality.
Founded in 1966, the Jekyll Island Arts Association ( JIAA), located in Goodyear Cottage, is comprised of guilds in pottery, woodcarving, weaving, porcelain arts, a choral group, and talented artists working in all mediums. The organization funds a student summer program for classical musicians and Glynn County's annual high school art show as well as monthly art programs and exhibits. The JIAA provides annual classes in ceramics, porcelain arts, needlework, painting, pottery, photography, jewelry making, quilting, sewing, weaving and wood carving to all of its members.

Al Kline by Nancy Kring Rowan
Most submissions to the Arts Festival will be for sale after judging and the "Festival Shop" will be open for purchasing that hard to find handmade item during the festival's operating hours. In addition to the exhibit and shop, the Jekyll Island Arts Association will have demonstrations by weavers, carvers, painters and potters going on during the Festival as well as the unveiling of a special art fundraiser. The ever popular Festival Bake Sale will be selling delicious homemade baked goods and lunch can be found at "The Caf" where famous Brunswick stew will be served with cornbread and coleslaw. Hot dogs, hamburgers and cold drinks will also be available during "The Caf's" hours of 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Please plan to attend this very special event and support Jekyll Island's talented artist community.

The famed Historic District of Jekyll, with its majestic Jekyll Island Club, quaint shops, and fascinating museums is only minutes away. Rent a bike at the hotel and tour this scenic island that in the late 1800s and early 1900s was the exclusive retreat of the Vanderbilts, Morgans, Goodyears, Pulitzers, and other wealthy American families.

"It includes accommodations for two people for two nights with deluxe continental breakfast each morning, a Jekyll Island Historic Tour, and a dinner/gambling cruise on the Emerald Princess casino ship. CHIPPING & PUTTING, THE KEYS TO LOWER SCORES
By Steve Godley, Director of Instruction, Jekyll Island Golf Club
Georgia Head Professional, Bird Golf Academy
I recently read an article about two young boys playing in a junior tournament. One was smaller in stature than the other was and his game was one or two clubs shorter in distance. Halfway through the match the larger boy was asked how he was playing. He responded by saying that he was losing and the smaller young man was "geing it up and down from the garbage cans and that this was driving him crazy." The smaller boy won the tournament. Aerwards, the smaller of the two boys was asked how he developed such a phenomenal short game. It turns out that he had been in an accident and was only able to chip and pu for the past two years. Through his love of the game and practicing, his lack of distance meant nothing to him or his performance level. This is the perfect example of the importance of a sound short game, solid chipping & puing.
The first element of a sound short game is puing. While puing is very individualized, there are certain things to practice to make your shot more consistent. The first thing is geing your eyes directly over the ball allowing the puer to move along the intended target line. Second is to work on the length of the backswing. Most players tend to take the puer back too far and decelerate through the stroke. A good way to develop a consistent stroke is to take the puer back only as far as the right foot. This will help make a good accelerating motion through the ball. However, a few drills incorporated into your practice routine will help improve puing; for example, puing 3 or 4 foot pus, while looking at the hole, will put your focus on your target. It will be surprising how easy these short pus become with practice.
Another critical element to a sound short game is chipping. This shot generally lies 4 to 6 feet from the green in the second cut. When presented with this shot I have found that players are in the habit of using just one club. They fail in the shot before they ever aempt it. They get infatuated with geing the ball in the air when in fact the ball has a beer chance of going in if it is rolling. The chip shot is very simple if players set up in a manner that will allow them to get the ball close to the hole. A good rule of thumb is the 1/3 2/3 rule. Let the length of the shot determine which club you choose. Ideally, the club chosen is one which will direct the ball towards the target with the first 1/3 of the distance in the air and with the remaining 2/3 distance rolling on the ground. Therefore, for a shorter shot the choice may be a sand wedge or pitching wedge. A lile longer shot an 8 iron would be needed. Longer then that a 6 iron does the trick and so on, all the way to a hybrid club for the longest of chips. Players need to help execute this shot by seing up properly. Primarily the club head must never pass the hands. The hands should always lead. Set up with a narrow stance, slightly open with 60% more of the weight on the le side. The ball is played off the right foot in order to set the hands well ahead of the club head. Remember what was previously said about deceleration? A long backswing and slowing through the hiing area will not work. Make the motion as if it was a pu. In essence, puing with a loed golf club, having the proper set-up, using all of the appropriate clubs and utilizing the puing stroke will improve your chipping.
So the next time you have practice time available, do not spend it all beating balls on the range. Use a portion of that time to practice chipping and puing for they are the keys to lower your scores.

TENNISTIPSTHESERVE
Every point in tennis begins with the serve. In fact, the serve gets it's name from the early days of the game in which only the exceptionally affluent, mostly royalty, played the game, and the ball was actually tossed into play by a courtside servant. When the players were ready they would request, "Service, please!" As the game has evolved, the rules governing the serve have allowed this shot to become an exciting weapon when executed well. It can also be a disappointing downfall for some at times, even at the top level of the game.
A key ingredient to serving is toss location. If serves are going into the net or short, the toss is too far in front of the server. If serves are going long or past the service box, the toss is too far in of back the player that is serving. With the proper aitude, the server can use "error management" to learn from their mistakes. Which means, to miss is not failure, it is feedback! Instead of having generally negative and vague thoughts when you miss a serve, think positive and specifics then adjust your toss, which in turn builds confidence that it is all right to make an error if you know how to fix it. What the heck, we get two serves each point in tennis anyway! If serves are going long... toss more in front, and if they are going in the net...bring your toss back to you some. When you hit a good serve, you have found your ideal toss location so take a mental snapshot and remember it the next time you request, "Service, please!" and you will make the serve.

TAKING THE PLUNGE COASTAL KAYAKING MADE EASYBy Bryan England
You have heard friends talking about it. You have read about it in magazines. You have even
watched it in the Olympics. Kayaking is everywhere. They say it is great for fishing, or bird
watching, or solo adventuring with no gas, no motor just you and the water.

But is kayaking right for you and how can you find out before committing to a kayak and gear purchase?
Guided kayak tours led by experienced instructors are a great way for beginners to "test the waters" of kayaking. A guide is trained to teach the basic strokes and safety measures you will need before you start and will be right there with you on the water every

paddle stoke along the way. And do not worry a kayak guide will provide all the equipment you will need. If you left your paddle at home, a guide will have one for you.
Maybe you have already spent lots of time on lakes and rivers back home and you are eager to get out in the Jekyll marshes on your own. Do you need a guide, or just a boat? Remember, Georgia has the largest tides on the east coast south of Maine between six and nine vertical feet. That changes huge areas from open water to high-and-dry every six hours. As all that water moves in and out of the channels, the resulting currents become very powerful. A guide can lead you into the marsh without constantly fighting the current, and without leaving you stuck in the mud at low tide! If you are new to the area, a tide table, weather forecast, and map are safety essentials for any trip on the water. However, the safest thing you can do is take a local guide and relax knowing you will get the best trip the marsh has to offer.
Want to do more than just paddle? Looking for the best birding in the marsh? Hoping for a close encounter with a dolphin? Interested in exploring an isolated beach and maybe finding some shark teeth?

Kayaks are the perfect vessel for getting close to wildlife and out-of-the-way places. Experienced guides know the wildlife of the marsh and well as they know their boat. It is a chance to see the best of the marsh with a professional naturalist.
Anyone who can ride a bicycle can paddle a kayak. Whether you are, eight or eighty kayaking can be for you. Tandem kayaks are especially helpful for children. These two-person boats are wider and extra-stable on the water. Tandem kayaks also give paddlers the option of taking turns, allowing one person to paddle for the other if one becomes tired. In addition, taking the trip with a friend or family member may even be more fun. So jump in! Go kayaking today, the water's fine!
For a guided tour, contact 4-H Tidelands Nature Center located beside Summer Waves. They operate guided kayak trips year round from Jekyll Island. Tidelands is a University of Georgia/4-H Program and the ecology of the marsh is a focus in all their tours. Trips are by reservation: call Tidelands at (912) 635-5032 for more information. HISTORY FEATURE

WHEN THE TRAINS STOOD STILL By Andrea Marroquin

When Jekyll Island Club Member Frank Henry Goodyear left home, he had "his worldly possessions packed in a small satchel and $100 borrowed from his father." From modest beginnings, Goodyear formed an empire of railroads, coal, iron, leather, and lumber.

Starting out, he probably never imagined events to come. He and his wife dined with President Cleveland. Daughter Grace was painted by John White Alexander, the muralist for the Library of Congress. Daughter Florence married Olympian Charles Meldrum Daniels. Son Frank, Jr. sailed yachts. Daughter-in-law, Dorothy Knox Goodyear Rogers entertained Edward, the former King of England and his wife, Wallis Simpson.
Goodyear was the son of a country doctor in western New York. As a boy, he worked on neighboring farms, at a tannery, and at a rural school.
Then, Goodyear obtained work as a

bookkeeper in Looneyville, PA for $35 a month. His boss, Robert Looney, owned tracts of timber and a number of saw mills.
On September 13, 1871, Goodyear married Josephine Looney, his employer's daughter. Her father gave her some wood lands. The following year he died.
The young couple moved to Buffalo. Goodyear purchased large stands of hemlocks and hardwoods in Pennsylvania. The leather industry needed hemlock tree bark to process hides. Goodyear became Director of the United States Leather Company. Goodyear built sawmills to process the lumber. In 1885, he chartered his first

railroad to transport the materials. It is said that just when Goodyear's capital was nearly spent, his wife gave him his first locomotive.
Before this time, most timber was transported by water. Goodyear used Shay engines and patented steam log loaders to move logs wherever he wanted. As a result, he manufactured "more lumber than any other concern in the country."
His brother, Charles, joined the business. In 1902, they became the Goodyear Lumber Company. Their enterprises included the Buffalo & Susquehanna Iron Company, the Buffalo & Susquehanna Railroad Company, the Buffalo & Susquehanna Coal Company, the Buffalo & Susquehanna Steamship Company, the Union Ship Canal, the Great Southern Lumber Company, and the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad.
Giving back to the community, Goodyear served as Park Commissioner for Buffalo. He contributed to the Buffalo General Hospital and the Buffalo Zoo. In 1900, he gave the zoo "Big Frank," a 2,000-pound Asian elephant, named after him.
Goodyear became a member of the Jekyll Island Club in 1902, making an "annual visit to get away from the wretched weather." Charles Goodyear wrote that his brother met James J. Hill, George F. Baker, J.P. Morgan, and other financiers, "who were wont to gather in the clubhouse in the late afternoons for their customary drinks of Scotch and soda." Goodyear discussed plans for building a railroad with Hill. "Advice from an empire builder like James J. Hill . . . did not go unheeded," Charles Goodyear remarked.
For Goodyear, work never ceased. "He was forever making notes and even at a formal dinner there was a pad and pencil beside his place," his nephew remembered. "He told me that if a man was successful in six out of ten enterprises he was himself a success...but when it came to his own case he needed ten out of ten."

In 1902, the Goodyear family stayed at the Sans Souci. They later rented both Hollybourne and Club Cottage while they built a home on Jekyll Island.
circa 1911.
Prominent architect George Cary submitted plans for Goodyear Cottage in 1903, but Goodyear chose Carrre and Hastings to design it instead. Carrre and Hastings simultaneously planned a Goodyear mansion in Buffalo that was similar to but grander than the Jekyll Island retreat. The Buffalo home was later demolished, while Goodyear Cottage was restored. Both residences were completed in 1906.
That fall, Goodyear was diagnosed with Bright's disease. He spent one last winter season at Jekyll Island before returning to Buffalo for medical care. Goodyear passed away on May 13, 1907. His estate was worth $10 million and his sawmill operation was the largest in the world. For his funeral, trains stopped and lumber and iron production temporarily ceased.
Goodyear's family continued to vacation on Jekyll Island. His granddaughter, Marjorie, recalled driving to the beach in red bugs, fishing from the Club Wharf pier, racing armadillos on the Jekyll Island Clubhouse lawn, wild boar hunts, and dinner parties on Frank Goodyear, Jr.'s yacht, the Poule d'eau. She married the son of a Club Member and honeymooned on the Golden Isles in 1942.
Today, Goodyear Cottage is used as an art gallery, gift shop, classroom, and festival space by the Jekyll Island Arts Association, (912) 635-3920.

William K. Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller and others springto glorious life in Splendid Isolation: e Jekyll Island Millionaires' Club, the new historical novel by Pamela Bauer Mueller, a 2009 Georgia Author of the Year.
Mueller weaves a captivating tale about powerful nanciers chasing the American entrepreneurial dream and then relaxing together, undisturbed, at their prestigious winter retreat in Jekyll Island, a getaway that in its heyday hosted clientele who controlled some one-sixth of the world's wealth. Splendid Isolation spans 54 years, from the Gilded Age to World War II, and is told through the voices of four longtime employees of the exclusive Jekyll Island Club, where the rst families of nance gathered every year. ere, on one of Georgia's most beautiful sea-barrier islands, they could hunt, golf, play tennis as well as dine at the elegant Jekyll Island Hotel. Still, for all of its leisurely allure, the hideaway became an important player in world events. Because so many of the world's greatest minds, and bank accounts, came together there in virtual isolation for three months each year, history was made at Jekyll Island. " e rst transcontinental phone call took place in the Jekyll Island Club House," explained Mueller. "President (William) McKinley planned his second election campaign while visiting the island, and the blueprint for the Federal Reserve Act was devised in secrecy there. By intertwining certain events with historical gures, and telling stories through the eyes of ladies and gentlemen who served them, I could give readers a peek into this fascinating past."

In her sweeping saga, Mueller introduces an intriguing story line designed to bring a new understanding to this day and time, when the world could be changed by a handful of men's a er-dinner talks. Readers will discover the millionaires' joys, tribulations, and deeply guarded secrets, and get a glimpse of the exclusive resort, with its Victorian clubhouse and mansionsized co ages, through 16 pages of historical photos.

A er a moment of the blank stare, we knew that a good day always presents itself on Jekyll Island! As we prepared our sons, Jack Henry, 7 and John Abbo , 3, for our short 15 minute drive, we

thought it was time to introduce our 3 year old to Miniature Golf, and what a great place to do so. How many places can you drive less than 15 minutes and escape all that's stressful and achieve the

ever-elusive "Quality Family Time?" All for a few bucks, we created some priceless memories in the sun as a family. We laughed and found out that one of the greatest parts of our day was

just watching our children having fun, ge ing along and learn to challenge themselves. Miniature Golf on Jekyll Island is now on top of e Havens' Family Approved Outings. Go try it!!

Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency, medical response team Beachgoers pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.
We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.

REVITALIZATION OF JEKYLL ISLAND

GREAT DUNES PARK

Jekyll Island revitalization is NOW UNDERWAY with the creation of Great Dunes Park.

Great Dunes Park will become a premier public beach active zone with modern amenities, plenty of green space and a renewed bicycle and pedestrian beach walk along the entire oceanfront. The site is the approximate location of the front nine holes of the famous links golf course designed by Walter Travis in 1926. The remaining back nine holes of Great Dunes Golf Course are still open for public play.
The first phase of the park is underway and consists of 8 acres with the north-

ern boundary at the intersection of Beachview Drive and Shell Road. When complete, the entire park will cover approximately 20 acres and connect the mini golf and playground area with the new beach village.
The first phase will create an entirely new accessible park experience featuring; new native landscaping, walks and parking (195 spaces), three family pavilions, one group pavilion, a 4,100 SF Beach Deck Pavilion, and a Restroom/ Changing building. The Beach Deck

Pavilion connects to an accessible dune crossover for access to the beach. Bicycle parking, showers, and an environmental sculpture area will also complement the new park. The pavilion structures have a relaxed coastal style and are constructed of pressure treated wood with standing seam metal roofs. The restroom building includes individual changing areas for men and women and has low maintenance stained concrete floors and standing seam metal roofing. Construction is underway and is scheduled for completion by Summer 2010.
