e treasures are hand-cra ed glass oats, called Island Treasures. e glass oats have been sought a er by Jekyll Island guests since 2002. Each is unique and stamped with the year to be a collector's item for the lucky beachcomber who nds one.
Island Treasures mimic glass oats once used on the shing nets of shermen in the early 1900s. e oats would sometimes break loose and wash ashore for lucky beachcombers to nd and keep. Collecting these glass oats became a hobby in the 1950's, declined as com-
mercial shing moved to plastic and Styrofoam oats. Glass shing oats became rare and are highly sought a er and very valuable today.
During these rst two winter months, the Jekyll Island Authority recreates this hunt-and- nd experience. e glass oat treasures are the works of commissioned artists from across the country. "Beach Buddies" hide them along the shore line every day for lucky visitors to nd and keep. Treasure nders can register their Island Treasure at the Jekyll Island Visitor Information Center to
receive a bio on the artist and a certi cate of authenticity. e Jekyll Island Visitor Information Center has Island Treasure oats and an array of the other colorful glass creations for purchase in-store or online.
In six years, over 1,000 glass oats have been found. Jekyll Island oats are collector's items and can be occasionally found on auction sites like eBay. ose who are unable to visit Jekyll Island can participate in a virtual treasure hunt on www.jekyllisland.com. Search the website for small, hidden Island Treasure pictures. e rst person to click on one will win an actual Island Treasure that will be shipped to them.

Winter is not officially here until I find large raffs of ducks off Jekyll Island. Traditionally, I begin looking in October. Ducks can be found from a variety of the outlooks off Jekyll Island.
and mergansers. The exciting find would be a Longtailed Duck. Long-tailed Ducks are rare ducks that live most of the year offshore and only come into land to nest. In the winter they are white with black and brown markings. The ducks on this year's Duck Stamp are Long-tailed Ducks.
there might attract American oystercatchers. Herons and egrets gather at the mouth of the creek to catch as easy meal of fish. Standing up on the tower, I scanned the river and found twenty-two White pelicans. This is also a good place to see winter ducks when the winds are out of the east or northeast.
Surf Scoter duck
The first place I look is Driftwood Beach, just north of Villas by the Sea. The ducks can be close there. Counting them is fun. One day I tried to count them and ended up laughing. The count would start- one, two, three getting up to somewhere around twenty-five and they would all dive, and I would have to start over again. They were just not going to be counted that day.
The ducks I saw were diving ducks, in particular scaup and scoters. There are two kinds of scaup--lesser and greater. There are three kind of scoters-- black, surf, and white-winged. It is a good idea to look for different kinds of ducks mixed in these large rafts of scaup and scoters. There could be Red Head Ducks
Over the last two winters the large rafts ducks I am accustomed to seeing were not present. What could be going on? I asked an expert and he told me that these ducks eat certain types of clams that had not been plentiful for the past two years. It made sense no clams no ducks?
To my great joy, this past spring I noticed of piles of small shells on the beach. These were dwarf surf clam and coquinas clam. The clams were back. So it was not a surprise to hear about the ducks off the coast of Jekyll Island in December. The clams are here. The ducks are here. There was a casual count of around thirteen thousand ducks right off Jekyll Island. Most of these ducks are Black scoters, greater and lesser Scaup with other ducks mixed in the huge rafts. You can see these rafts from the Jekyll Island Beach Deck, the South Dune Picnic area, and the newly completed Bird Viewing Platform at St. Andrews Picnic Area.
The Birding Viewing Platform at St. Andrews is nestled in the cedar trees near a creek outlet. The oyster banks
So spend a little time looking for those ducks of winter. Help us compile a list of birds seen. Make a list of the birds you see from the Bird Viewing Platform and leave your list at the Jekyll Island Visitor Information Center.

HISTORY F EATURE
Jekyll's Connection to Glass Past By Andrea Marroquin
In the winter months, visitors flock to Jekyll Island's beaches in search of hidden glass floats, known as "Island Treasures." Jekyll Island Club Member Alanson B. Houghton could have made his own.
Houghton was known as America's "business man diplomat." Among the third generation of his family to head the Corning Glass Works, Houghton began learning the glass trade in 1889. In time, he became Vice President (1902-1910) and later President (1910-18) of Corning Glass Works. He would also serve as a U.S. Congressman and an ambassador to Germany and Great Britain. Despite an active political career, Houghton helped manage the family glass dynasty into his 70s.
Corning Glass Works had developed the glass light bulb casing for Thomas Edison's incandescent lamp. With the company poised to bring affordable electricity to the masses, Houghton sought an automated means to rapidly and inexpensively produce light bulbs. Other Corning executives were reluctant to invest, so he and his brother Arthur financed it themselves. This resulted in the company's first semi-automatic bulb-making machine in 1913. That
year it produced 420 bulbs an hour and 40 million light bulbs. Houghton then negotiated agreements for Corning Glass to produce 40% of the incandescent light bulbs in America.
Corning Glass Works also cornered the market on railway signal glass. Intent on producing the best quality railroad lamps, Houghton established one of the nation's earliest in-house research labs and hired professionally trained scientists. They studied how to improve the heat-resistance, durability, and color schemes of railroad lanterns and warning lights. The standards they set were adopted by the industry. As a result, the company manufactured 75% of railway signal glass used in America. Corning's "shatterproof " glass lanterns were soon a mainstay of the railroad industry.
The onset of World War I resulted in the loss of access to European laboratory glass. Beginning in 1914, Corning Glass Works began producing laboratory glassware. This led to a patent for a new

techniques date to his time with Corning Glass Works. A prolific artist, Carder created 7,000 varieties of candlesticks, lamps, perfume bottles, bowls, vases, goblets and decanters. In later years, Houghton's nephew, Arthur Amory Houghton, Jr., would manage Steuben's development of clear crystal.

As Georgia's first sea turtle rehabilitation, research, and educational facility, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) on Jekyll Island receives patients with a variety of injuries and illnesses.
Some of the turtles' conditions are the result of natural environmental causes while others are caused by human impact. Regardless of the cause, our goal is to heal every turtle, where appropriate, and safely release them back into the wild.
On August 9, 2009, Emma arrived at GSTC after being stranded on a beach at Amelia Island, Florida.
Emma is a green sea turtle who Dr. Terry Norton, Director/Veterinarian describes as arriving with "the most severe boat strike injury that I have ever seen in a live turtle. She is truly amazing." With a large gash in her carapace (upper shell) likely caused by a boat propellor Emma's treatment includes regular cleansing of her wound, applying sterile honeycoated bandages that are used

for human burn victims and then applying a waterproof bandage so that she can spend her days in the water which allows her to eat. In the evenings, the wound is again cleansed covered with a silver mesh material and then Wound Vacuum Assisted therapy is applied while she is kept out of the water. Initially, Emma even spent overnights at the homes of trained staff where her recovery could be monitored. The great news is Emma is eating well and actively moving around. It's a long road to recovery for her but she's well on her way. Visitors to GSTC can see Emma and her incredible progress.

Left: Antiques by Carla Cook Smith. Right: Woodpecker by Ernest Shaver
The Jekyll Island Arts Association will host the exceptional work of photographer; Carla Cook Smith and whittler; Ernest Shaver on exhibit at Goodyear Gallery January 4th 31st. The artists' reception will be held Sunday, January 10th from 13 p.m.
Photographer, Carla Cook Smith discovered a new side of her self when she picked up a camera. As a painter, she photographed places and things she wanted to paint. However she started to see the beauty of photography all on its own. The lens opened to show her the extraordinary beauty of ordinary things. Through the camera Carla takes the time to absorb the beauty of what is before her: storm clouds on the marsh, sand blowing across the desert, a dusty radio, an interesting reflection or a new perspective of a cemetery. Carla's hope is that her work opens others to pleasant thoughts and new experiences.
Self taught in the art of hand carvings whittler, Ernest Shaver began wood carving with a pocket knife in 1980. Early on, he concentrated on hand carving walking sticks that feature mammals, reptiles, human faces, vines, and abstract images. Most recently, he started hand carving song birds and woodpeckers using several wood types such as bass, buckeye, and tupelo. Ernest strives to develop the implied image of each walking stick or bird by the natural shape of the original wood.
Admission is always free in Goodyear's gallery and shop which is located in the Jekyll Island Historic District. Their regular hours are MondayFriday, Noon4 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m.4 p.m.

revitalization of jekyll island
Morgan conference center
1929 Morgan Tennis Center is scheduled to reopen in June 2010 as a Multi-use facility.
Jekyll Island Authority has entered into an agreement with Jekyll Landmark Associates (a Jekyll Island Club Hotel affiliate) to do an adaptive reuse of the 1929 Morgan Tennis Center.
This will include exterior work, as well as refurbishing the interior with the addition of restrooms and an event balcony so that the building can be used for weddings, meetings, banquets, and
other events. New food service/kitchen facilities will be added to the existing building. The completed facilities will open in June 2010 and will be used along with temporary structures and tents in the adjacent parking area for convention and meeting events during the June 2010 to December 2011 construction of the new Convention Center. The Morgan Building, when completed, will be operated by the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.
