FINDERS KEEPERS

Glass Floats Placed All Over Jekyll Island

Beginning New Year's Day and continuing through the months of January and February the Jekyll Island Authority hosts "Island Treasures," a unique treasure hunting experience. The treasures are handcrafted glass floats called Island Treasures. The glass floats have been sought after by Jekyll Island guests since 2002. Each is a unique design and is stamped with the year of the hunt on its base.
Island Treasures mimic glass floats once used on the nets of fishermen in the early 1900's. The floats

would sometimes break loose and wash ashore for lucky beachcombers to find and keep.
Collecting these glass floats became a hobby in the 1950's when the commercial fishing industry began using plastic and styrofoam floats, making glass fishing floats rare, highly sought after and valuable Island Treasures.
During these first two winter months, the Jekyll Island Authority recreates this treasure hunting experience for their visitors. Volunteers hide the

Island Treasures in various locations on Jekyll Island for lucky guests to find. The glass floats are the work of commissioned artists from across the country.
This eclectic group of talented artists uses the same techniques that have been used for 2000 years to create glass art pieces.
The Jekyll Island Guest Information Center also has an array of beautiful Island Treasures for purchase in-store.

Husband-Wife Team Showcased at Goodyear Cottage

The January Jekyll Island Arts Association exhibit will showcase the fine work of husband and wife team Susan and Roger Morin. Susan has been a fiber artist for more than 30 years, specializing in the areas of primitive, folk art and landscape rug hooking designs.
Over the years she has developed her own unique skills by attending workshops held by renowned fiber artists throughout the world. Susan has taught rug hooking courses throughout north America. She has received several art festival awards, including first

place in an international rug hooking exhibit in Tennessee. Susan's rugs are known for color contrasts and strong elements of design including lines, shapes, texture, pattern and form. Roger has been a serious photographer for the last seven years, specializing mainly in the area of landscape/nature and macro photography.
Roger has worked with, and developed his own skills through numerous workshops given by best-selling author Bryan Peterson throughout the world. He is currently teaching

photography courses in Georgia and Nova Scotia, and plans to teach an on-line photo editing class. Roger has received several first place awards in various festivals. He believes in limited computer manipulation of images, preferring to let the camera speak for itself. CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF
Historic Phone Call

Seated inside a parlor at Georgia's legendary Jekyll Island Club, AT&T President Theodore N. Vail (far right) participates in America's first transcontinental telephone call, on Jan. 25, 1915. Also attending the historic communications event on Jekyll Island are (left to right) noted American architects William Welles Bosworth and Samuel Breck Parkman Trowbridge and Jekyll Island Club members J.P. Morgan Jr. and William Rockefeller. Vail's telephone party line includes U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, in Washington D.C.; telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell, in New York; and Bell's assistant, Thomas A. Watson, in San Francisco.
Jekyll Island festivities celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first transcontinental phone call will take place Jan. 25, 2015 at 4 p.m., inside Morgan Center at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

The famous four-way call that transpired around 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Jan. 25, 1915, was hailed as a technological triumph of monumental proportions, as instantaneous, coast-to-coast conversation became possible for the first time. The thrilling moment ceremoniously ushered in a new era of transcontinental telephone service for the expanding U.S. population.
It was no ordinary party line, either. Among the prominent participants on the call that winter's day: U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, in Washington; scientist and telephone inventor Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, in New York; and Bell's eminent assistant, Thomas A. Watson, in San Francisco.
And when the greeting, "Hello, Jekyll Island," reverberated across the phone lines, it was answered from Georgia by American Telephone and Telegraph Company President Theodore Newton Vail, who took part in the pioneering chat as he sat in one of the parlors of the legendary Jekyll Island Club. Among those witnessing the remarkable proceedings unfolding in the

room were business magnates and Jekyll Island Club members J.P. Morgan Jr. and William Rockefeller, along with distinguished American architects William Welles Bosworth and Samuel Breck Parkman Trowbridge. The Jekyll Island Museum's "Centennial Celebration" on Jan. 25 will pay tribute to the historic role Jekyll Island played in this major communications milestone.
The celebration takes place inside the Morgan Center on the grounds of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, 371 Riverview Drive, Jekyll Island, Ga., 31527. The event will feature a short presentation, a complimentary champagne toast, and the unveiling of a commemorative keepsake. Coffee and cake also will be served.
The Jan. 25 festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. the same hour as the precedent-setting transcontinental telephone call a century earlier. Admission is free.
Want to learn more? The Jekyll Island Museum recently launched an online exhibit telling the

story of the first transcontinental telephone call. The presentation can be viewed at www. jekyllisland.com.
The Jekyll Island Museum is your "Gateway to the Gilded Era." Let us take you on a journey of discovery through our daily programs, interpretive exhibits, and museum store. You also can unlock the pristinely preserved heritage of Jekyll Island with a tour of the National Historic Landmark District, led by museum experts. Throughout the Historic District, guests will find an array of artifacts, exhibits and active tour opportunities that provide an insightful look at the island's past lives.
The Jekyll Island Museum is located at 100 Stable Road, Jekyll Island, Ga., 31527.
Telephone 912-635-4036.
The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free.

A Seaside Affair

on Jekyll Island
Word is getting out that the Golden Isles has a lot to offer for upcoming nuptials. In 2013, almost 1,000 weddings took place in the Golden Isles, according to probate court records from Glynn County. And that's just couples applying locally for a license. It does not include couples from other counties in Georgia or other states who came to the Golden Isles to be married.
Returning as a vendor for the 2015 show, Straton Hall Events, a catering company in Brunswick, booked 300 weddings in 2013, and the company doesn't anticipate the number to slow down anytime soon. Chef Jay Anderson of Straton Hall Events said he isn't shocked that so many couples are choosing this oceanside community to say "I do."
A star of the wedding cake world will advise brides-to-be in the art of choosing a wedding cake. Joshua John Russell, five-time winner of "The Food Network Challenge" and a finalist on "Last Cake Standing," will headline "A Seaside Affair."
The Golden Isles Bridal Show 2015 will be held on Sunday, January 18 at The Jekyll Island Convention Center and you will receive $3.00 off if you register online, just type in "SouthernC3"
For vendor inquiries or other questions, contact Becky Derrick / Marketing Consultant at 912.634.8408 or info@goldenislesbridalshow.com.

TURTLE CONFERENCE FUN WAY TO LEARN

When Bruce Drye retired from the Florida Park Service, he knew he wanted to remain in public service, "I volunteered at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve and after two years of working with ANERR, they asked me to start a monitoring program for the additional twelve miles of beach that remained unmonitored.
The St. George Island Volunteer Turtlers was created in 2001 and has been going strong ever since.

I have a steady flow of volunteers and also enlist the help of interns from Texas, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and California." This meeting provides a unique opportunity to learn about sea turtle research and the conservation efforts taking place in our own backyard.
The February 4-7, 2015, Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Meeting on Jekyll Island will highlight marine turtle activities that occur in the southeastern United States, from Virginia through Texas. Regardless

of where you live or your background, you are sure to walk away with a greater insight into one of the most important marine turtle habitats in the world.
Visitors are invited to view displays and exhibits at no charge during afternoon open houses on Thursday and Friday, February 5-6, from 3:30 PM to 6 PM in the Atlantic Ballroom at the beautiful Jekyll Island Convention Center. The Atlantic Ballroom will be a hub of activity
