Another Successful
Sea Turtle Nesting Season
Jekyll Island hosts one of the oldest loggerhead sea turtle nesting beach projects in the entire world, placing tags in nesting sea turtles as early as 1958. With the support of the Jekyll Island Authority and Georgia Sea Turtle Center, the Jekyll Island Foundation, the Department of Natural Resources, our dedicated patrol team, our beach program participants and donors, along with many others, we have nearly completed yet another successful summer of research on Jekyll Island's nesting sea turtle population. This summer yielded a lower total nest count than the past few years - however this dip is a natural trend in sea turtle nesting populations, as loggerhead sea turtles only return to nest on Jekyll Island once about every 3 years.
The state of Georgia yielded a grand total of 1,204 sea turtle nests with Jekyll ranking in 5th in the state with 107 nests. While the loggerhead sea turtle is the only species that nested on Jekyll Island this summer, the green sea turtle and leatherback sea turtle did make appearances elsewhere in the state.
Until next year,

Expanding the Family: GSTC AmeriCorps
Welcomes New AmeriCorps
members shine!
September was an exciting month for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center's AmeriCorps program. The first week of September we began our sixth program year at the GSTC and welcome twelve year round members to the team. Seven faces from this year's cohort are familiar with five new friendly faces joining our team. Expansion this year includes two new positions that integrate education with research and by working with our volunteers to extend our community outreach to build stronger relationships between Jekyll Island and the local Glynn County population. We are very excited to have these new positions to help further our mission of environmental conservation and stewardship.
AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects over 70,000 Americans each year in service to meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, health, and homeland security. Celebrating 20 years of community service, AmeriCorps' members serve more than 2,000 non-profits, public agencies, and community organizations. We are very fortunate to be a part of this invaluable program since 2009. The positive impact of our AmeriCorps program
has helped us reach over 40,000 children for in house programming. The program is critical to our educating people about sea turtle nesting on Georgia's beaches by bringing more than 15,000 guests on Nighttime Turtle Walks and nearly 1,800 guests on Morning Sunrise Walks.
We encourage everyone to come by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to welcome our fresh new faces and returning AmeriCorps members.
Recently, a special award was given to AmeriCorps alumni Joseph Colbert. Joseph, a two term member and current graduate student under Dr. Kimberly Andrews, was recognized at the State Capitol in Atlanta for his continuing commitment to serving his community through his military and AmeriCorps service. Joseph is currently a Tillman scholar, the first at University of Georgia.
A second award was given to three term member and future graduate student Katie Mascovich. Katie and Dr. Andrews applied for and received a Georgia Sea Grant award, which will provide two years of funding for Katie's graduate work at the University of Georgia. Both Katie and Joseph will be doing their Master's work in conjunction with the GSTC Research Department. We're proud of them and their accomplishments and excited to see what the future holds!

The Founding of
the Jekyll Island Museum
By Andrea Marroquin
On December 11, 1954, Tallu Fish opened Indian Mound Cottage to the public as Jekyll Island's first museum. As the museum's first curator and publicist, she presented Jekyll Island history as a main attraction to draw guests to the island.
Her daughter remembered: "What my mother wanted more than anything else in the world, was to make a house that the people of Georgia could come into and that they would feel for one day in their life they were big Rockefeller rich people."
Inside Indian Mound, William Rockefeller's former home on the Island, Fish displayed exhibits of Club Era furniture, taxidermy, and ceramic chamber pots, pitchers, and bowls. She sold sand dollars and straw hats as island souvenirs. She started the first guided tram tours though the historic district and offered guests Red Bug rides.
Fish also helped to boost tourism by promoting the legend of the "Wishing Chair" to raise money
for historic preservation. For just 25 cents, guests had the privilege of sitting in the infamous chair to make a wish in hopes that it would be granted. This "Wishing Chair" can still be seen on guided tours of the historic district inside Indian Mound today.
From the first, Fish acted to preserve the history of the Jekyll Island Club. When she became curator, she moved memorabilia and historical documents from the clubhouse to the museum so they could be preserved for the future. She also conducted research into the island's eventful past, interviewing former club members and locals with knowledge to share. Her dedication to the history of the Jekyll Island Club ensured the preservation of this history for posterity.
In all, Fish published many articles and books on the history and folk life of Jekyll Island and greater Georgia. Her book "Once Upon an Island: The Story of Fabulous Jekyll Island" is one of the first of its kind on the history of the Jekyll Island Club Era.
When Fish retired as curator in 1969, the Brunswick News declared that her vision in founding the Jekyll Island Museum was more important to the state of Georgia than even the founding of the Jekyll Island Club.
Her legacy continues. Sixty years after its founding, the Jekyll Island Museum continues to operate as the steward of Jekyll Island's past, preserving its stories, structures, and artifacts. Through the museum's daily tours and exhibits of the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District, guests can see and experience a touch of the Gilded Era, when Jekyll Island catered to the Rockefellers, Goulds, Morgans, and Pulitzers.
Today, the Jekyll Island Museum is based out of the former Jekyll Island Club Stables. To walk in the footsteps of the Jekyll Island Club Members and hear their stories, call or visit the Jekyll Island Museum, 100 Stable Road, 912-635-4036.

THE WANDERER
LANDING
On November 28, 1858, approximately 409 captive men, women, and children were brought to shore on Jekyll Island. They were illegally smuggled into the United States aboard the Wanderer, a luxury yacht turned slave ship.
Although owning and selling slaves was still legal in many parts of the country in these days soon before the Civil War, importing slaves had been illegal for many years. Nonetheless, hundreds of enslaved Africans, referred to as "indentured apprentices from Africa," were brought to shore on Jekyll Island.
The Wanderer survivors were among the last known groups of enslaved Africans sold into captivity in America. From Jekyll Island, they were sold and scattered across Georgia and throughout the south.
The event was widely reported in the newspapers and was a hugely controversial topic in its day. It riveted the nation, simultaneously igniting hostilities between North and South and creating widespread anti-slavery sentiments as the country marched towards Civil War.
In 2008, 150 years after the landing, the Jekyll Island Museum dedicated a memorial on the south end of Jekyll Island to the survivors of the slave ship Wanderer. The Wanderer Memorial includes a sculpture by artist Mario Schambon and three interpretive panels that share the story of the ship's landing, the trial of the slave runners, and the fate and legacy of many of the enslaved Africans.
The Jekyll Island Museum continues to actively research what became of the Wanderer survivors.
Mario Schambon: An Interview with the Artist of the Wanderer Memorial
By Andrea Marroquin
Mario Schambon, an artist with Malone Design/ Fabrication, designed and installed the Wanderer Memorial.
Q: What made you excited about getting involved in this project?
A: The history of it. Because I am Columbian, and where my family is from, and where I identify most is the coast of Columbia, which was a slave port for the western half of South America. So it was a pretty interesting piece of history to be involved with. . . . a pleasure yacht turned slave ship. That's it, just telling that story.
Q: What was your vision for the memorial?
A: The aesthetics and the story weaving part of it is that it looks like a net. If you look at the enslavement process as a net cast over people by other people, either more powerful, more crafty, or just more evil - you cast a net over a man, and you catch him, and then what happens to him? So the sails are obviously the boat, coming over to Africa and coming back this way. There is the movement of the wind. Then the actual lines themselves represent the
journey. In African history, the slave trade was a cross-continental thing, and with Europeans involved it became a trans-global thing. More than anything it was a journey about the people, and their ensnarement.
Having three sails is also pretty traditional to African lore. There's the big one, which is the Mama, the middle one which is the Daddy, and then the little one which would be the baby. So there's that whole "family unit." The triangles are a symbol of change.
Q: What about the sign panels?
A: I wasn't one hundred percent sold on having sign panels out here, but I know it is important to be able to tell the story and have a piece. And I think, looking at it, it's pretty successful. It involved some careful laying out, because if these signs are pointed in the wrong way, you totally obscure the piece, and you also obscure the panels. We had to play with that.

Folklore, Rumor & Myth
14
October 24-26, 2014
Spooky stories and spirit sightings are the subject of the Jekyll Island Museum's nighttime tours in October.
On dark October nights, enjoy pleasant shivers listening to ghost stories of the Gilded Age on Jekyll Island. As a prelude to the Halloween season, Jekyll Island Museum guides tell tales of restless souls and spirit sightings on "Folklore, Rumor & Myth" tours offered on Friday and Saturday nights through the month of October.
Enjoy mysterious tales and the thrill of adventure while exploring the haunting surroundings of the Jekyll Island historic district. Along moonlit pathways, explore locations where apparitions have been sighted and unexplained events have occurred before continuing inside one of the gilded age cottages for more spine-tingling stories as darkness falls.
Whispers of supernatural events have long hidden amidst the mossdraped live oaks and historic homes of Jekyll Island. At night, when shadows lengthen, startled visitors and employees both have reported seeing glimpses of apparitions and hearing unsettling sounds. Stories of unfinished business, eternal love, and deep mystery abound.
On Jekyll Island, supernatural occurrences involve both historical figures and mysterious apparitions. Tour guides lean on their professional knowledge of the island's past to interpret the strange events. Attempts to explain the phenomena are rooted in the written records of those who visited the island long ago, and the ghostly stories focus on the history, happiness, and heartache of historical inhabitants of Jekyll Island.
Come explore Jekyll Island's supernatural side! Both exciting and informative, this guided tour is a fun way to explore the past.
Explore haunted hotels in Georgia at the Jekyll Club. With our haunted vacation packages, skeptics and believers will confront the supernatural during our ghost hunt weekend. Join the Paranormal Researcher, Author and Host of Ghost Hunt Weekends Chad Morin, and The Ghost Hunt Weekends Crew for a hauntingly thrilling event.
Ghost Hunt Weekend Package Includes:
Historic Hotelier of the Year-Patty Henning Clubhouse or Traditional Accommodations for two nights Welcome Reception Dinner on Friday (Cash Bar) Breakfast Buffet each morning in the Grand Dining Room Private tour of Hollybourne Cottage and tour of the Jekyll Island

A Grateful Life
Friendship
By Lauren Garvey agratefullife.weebly.com
e have probably all seen a quote on Facebook
Wthat says something about those precious friends, who even after time and distance remain the same in our hearts. Those few friends that make you laugh, who understand you more than most, who you connect with in a stronger way.
We all know what a blessing it is to have those precious people in our lives. How very much we need the relationship and loyalty of that best friend who sticks with us through "thick and thin".
I guess we are really lucky if we have more than one or two. For me, three women are on that special and cherished list. Two I have known for over thirty years and one over twenty! Gosh, how is that possible? Where has the time gone?
All three are mothers as well, so sharing about our children is always easy. I love hearing about their accomplishments, their special and exciting times. I think women and especially mothers could talk about our children for hours, right? It's just a given, our favorite subject really. But it is during the difficult, sad and troubling times, that we learn who our real friends are. Who is in it with you for the long haul?
My hope is that I am a good, loyal and trusted friend to these women and all my other sweet friends. I hope that I am raising children, who through my example are the very same kind of friend. I pray for and tell my children frequently, that a good friend is one of God's greatest blessings and if you only have one or two, that is better than a room full of "fair weather" friends.
Cherish and nurture those dear people in your lives, never take them for granted. Call them or better yet, go to lunch, give them a hug and tell them how very important they are in your life! After all, what is life really all about? Family, great friends and the love we all share.
