EVENTS
HOP ON OVER FOR EASTER EGG STROLL
Meet Easter Bunny and search for sweet somethings all around Historic District
The excitement, anticipation and the sweet smell of Easter candy will waft through the air once again at the Annual Jekyll Island Easter Egg Stroll on Saturday, April 19th. Holiday-clad children ages 10 and under will hunt for hidden Easter Eggs on the manicured lawn of Jekyll Island's Historic District. Once a child finds ten eggs they will exchange them for sweet treats. Due to the overwhelming success of last year's "3 & Under Area," a special place will be provided once again for the safety of our smallest egg hunting enthusiasts. All children will enjoy crafts, face painting, pony rides, and visiting with the Easter Bunny.

SKEET HOUSE NO SHOT IN THE DARK
Thanks to funding from the Jekyll Island Foundation,
restoration work on the historic Skeet House begins
this spring. John Hunter, Director of Historic
Resources for the Jekyll Island Authority, recently
For information on how you can help preserve history on
announced that Phase I of the project to save the historic structure will soon be underway.
Jekyll Island, contact the Jekyll Island Foundation, 912-635-4402, foundation@ jekyllisland.com.
The building was constructed by the Jekyll Island Club, which was formed in 1886 as a prestigious hunting club for wealthy and well-known members.
The Skeet House is presently the only intact structure from the Club Era outside the Historic District. As part of the project, the building will soon be relocated to a more prominent and accessible spot on Pier Road.
Due to the condition of the building, preservation specialists determined that the most efficient and cost effective way to restore it will be to take it apart and put it back together again.
"Sometimes the preservation of a building is a puzzle," Hunter said. "To complete the puzzle you have to examine each piece. With the Skeet House, we will be doing just that."
"After we move the Skeet House to its new home, we will install exhibits on Club Era hunting and repurpose the building as a fieldtrip classroom."
Guests this spring can watch the progress as the building is moved to its new home on Pier Road in the heart of the Historic District. It promises to be a fascinating process.
HORTON POND: A BEAUTIFUL PROJECT
More and more people visit Horton Pond each year, and their presence is starting to show. The little pond does not have the protections needed to provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the space without disturbing the local ecosystem. Unfortunately, we have seen too much littering, animal harassment and alligator feeding.
The Jekyll Island Foundation has a solution that will increase community access to the pond while ensuring that its plants and animals thrive.
Future plans include installing an accessible viewing platform, a half mile nature trail, an ADA-compliant
We're asking for your help as we move forward with this vision. With the proper infrastructure, visitors of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to see turtles and alligators basking, explore the maritime forest and learn about the wonderful profusion of life that is native to Jekyll Island.
parking area, educational signs, raccoon-proof trash containers and an array of wildlife habitat improvements. These steps will provide recreational and educational opportunities for visitors while protecting the natural beauty and ecological diversity of this site.
Without these improvements, Horton Pond's wildlife and scenery will continue to deteriorate. It is up to us to encourage responsible stewardship.
Join us as we save this wonderful space and preserve it for generations of visitors to enjoy.

STUDYING THE FIRST RIVER
During the early development of the island by the Jekyll Island Club and by the State of Georgia, Construction of infrastructure resulted in hydrologic alteration and fragmentation of tidal marsh. These changes were concentrated near the current entryway to the island and are still apparent on the landscape today. "Fortson Pond" lies to the northeast immediately upon arriving on Jekyll Island and encompasses about 4.5 acres.
The pond was formed when the Ben Fortson Parkway was constructed in the 1950s, completely obstructing the natural southerly flow of tidal water. Fortson Pond now receives tidal inflow solely from the north
during only the highest tides.
Preliminary assessments have documented hypoxic conditions in Fortson Pond that are believed to be due to a chronic overabundance of cyanobacteria that generates decomposing, oxygen-consuming sediment.
Few species of birds, fish, reptiles, or aquatic mammals are commonly seen utilizing this area, an indication of impoverished habitat for species large and small. This situation presents a clear need for research to improve our understanding of the problems and planning to support restoration of the health of this system.
Aerial photograph from 1948 showing the unfragmented tidal marsh system before the Jekyll Island Authority was established in
1950 and the causeway was built in 1954. RIGHT: The same system as it presents itself today.

SUSTAIN THE FUN FOR EVERYONE
What is your favorite thing about the month of April? Is it April Fool's Day, a day full of jokes and laughter? Or is it the start of baseball season? Spring has sprung, as flowers bloom, bees start buzzing, and migrating birds return from their journeys south! For some of you, it may be about that time for your spring break! There are lots of things to love about April!
What are some things we can do to make a difference this Earth Day, and every day? Some of our waste and garbage is biodegradable--meaning it can decompose, or be broken down in nature, without using chemicals or machinery. Newspaper, for example, takes about six weeks to decompose. An apple core will take about two months to decompose.
Let's not forget about Earth Day! Every year in April, people all over the United States, and the world, participate in Earth Day activities. Earth Day is a chance for all of us to show that we care about our environment and its sustainability.
Sustainability simply means "to keep in existence". We need to keep the Earth clean and healthy so it can be a great home for people, animals, and plants for many, many years to come!
Unfortunately, most materials take many, many years to decompose, and some may never fully go away. Just remember the three R's: reduce, reuse, recycle! Reduce using plastic bags at the grocery store and use a canvas one instead. Reuse margarine containers to store your leftover dinner, or decorate it and use it to store you hair barrettes or coin collection. Recycle those aluminum cans, glass bottles, and cardboard boxes.

true beauty of this coastal paradise. Need more than a few hours on the water? They can handle that too, with the multi-day charter tours which take visitors throughout this watery region of the world.
Two decades ago, SouthEast Adventure Outfitters tapped into this aquatic theme by introducing guests and residents of the Golden Isles to these water-heavy activities.
In May, guides will host a three-day trip to Cumberland Island, from May 16th to May 18th, which will include hiking, camping and kayaking for the whole family.
Daily, the guides at SouthEast Adventure take guests out on kayak tours, as well as paddleboarding excursions, fishing tours and nature boat cruises, all of which highlight the
Alongside this trip and others, SouthEast Adventure will likewise offer daily two- and three-hour kayaking trips throughout the month.

A Grateful Life
I'm Dug In
By Lauren Garvey agratefullife.weebly.com
Okay, I'll admit it, I don't venture very far away from my home. I don't see the point and don't feel the need to go much beyond the beautiful Golden Isles. Everything I want and need is right here, except for the occasional trip to Atlanta and Athens to see our families, I like to stay put.
A little slice of heaven, Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, and Sea Island are tucked away, like giant jewels glistening in the sun, on the coast of Georgia. Southern hospitality is still in place and most people have a smile on their face just knowing how lucky they are to live here.
I never dreamed of loving a particular place, an area of the country, as much as I love this area. I am reminded of a line from one of my favorite movies, "The Big Chill". Kevin Kline's character is upset with William Hurt's character and he is explaining how he feels about the little community he lives in. He says to him " I love this town. This is my home. I'm dug in." That says it perfectly for me.
What makes it so special to so many? The list is pretty simple. The obvious things that continue to bring contentment to me on a daily basis, even after twenty years, are the beach, the sun, the marsh, the trees, the boats and the abundant nature. But there is more. There
is a sense of peace and tranquility that I have never been able to replicate anywhere else.
I see people come and go on vacation here through the summer and remember a time when that was us. Vacationing here whenever we got a long weekend or many summers renting a place for a month, it became clear to us, this is where we wanted to be.
Once we made the move, I never looked back, it felt like home. I am thankful everyday of my life to live in a place that I love, that brings me happiness every time I look around at the beauty of it all. I guess I would have to say with great pride, "I'm dug in. "
