SUMMER CAMP

SHARKFEST AN ADVENTURE

School is out, summer is here and it is time for adventure! This summer, Jekyll Island will be home to a series of two-day camps for kids, centered on ecoeducation and outdoor fun. Join Capt. Brooks Good and his crew from Coastal Outdoor Adventure for SharkFest Adventure Camps off the shores of Jekyll!

During these hands-on camps, children ages 6 to 14 will be led through two mornings of shark-based fun and learning, with opportunities for tykes to try their hands at shark fishing. While on the open waters surrounding Jekyll Island, area fishing guides will help kids reel in a variety of catches, including Bonnethead, Blacktip, Sandbar and Spinner sharks. Besides bringing home a big catch, students will also brush up on their knowledge about bait options, catch procedures and reel techniques, for sharks as well as other local fish.

"You should see the looks on these children's faces as they reel in that first fish," Good said. "Not only do these camps give kids a feeling of pride in themselves for tackling this new skill, it also opens their eyes to new ways of thinking about our coastal ecosystem. This hands-on activity instills in them a new respect for the world and waterways around them."
Camps run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and cost $175 per child. July camps will be offered July 4 and 5; 11 and 12; 18 and 19; and 25 and 26. Camps are also

offered in August, on August 1 and 2; 8 and 9; 15 and 16; 22 and 23; and 29 and 30.
The camps depart from the Jekyll Wharf Marina in the Historic District. Please note, each two-day camp is limited to the first 18 children who register. For more information and to register online, please visit coastaloutdooradventurecamps.

SEA TURTLE CENTER
RIDE THE NIGHT AND BE AMAZED
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is offering the public a unique summer opportunity to help guests gain a first-hand understanding of the mysterious world of Jekyll Island's endangered sea turtles. A program now in its second year, Ride with Night Patrol will allow guests to experience the beach from an entirely fresh perspective.
Participants will meet biologists at 8:45 p.m. at the Great Dunes Pavilion. From there, they accompany them to the beach on all-terrain vehicles. They then provide field assistance in order to gain hands-on experience in spotting sea turtle crawls, taking measurements of sea turtles and their habitat, and marking the egg chamber appropriately. Throughout the night patrol, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center's staff is available to answer any questions guests may have.
Night patrols with Sea Turtle Center staff will be offered nightly throughout July. A minimum of 8 hours advance notice is required and staff can only accommodate a maximum of four guests per patrol. Each night patrol session can last for up to 11 hours (participants have the option of staying on the beach all night or returning at any point) and costs $100 per person. All programs are subject to weather and physical requirements.
New this year to the Night Patrol program is the Nest Tracker Initiative. Through the program, guests can "adopt" a sea turtle nest on Jekyll Island beaches, and stay up-to-date about the hatchlings of their nest. Those who opt into the Nest Tracker program will be mailed a specialty package which includes a personalized Nest Tracker certificate, Nest Tracker stickers, information detailing as well as a photo of the adopted nest, plus a Sea Turtle Tracker information sheet and their name listed on the Georgia Sea Turtle Center web site.
In addition to the mailed package, trackers also receive "soon to hatch" notices about when the eggs in their nests are close to hatching, an inventory of the nest throughout the season, as well as a post-season report about their nest. Participation in the Nest Tracker Initiative is $40 per nest, and more than one name can be listed as the nest tracker. All funds from this new program directly benefit the research department at the Center.
For additional information regarding Ride with Night Patrol, or to make a reservation for an upcoming patrol, call 912.635.4043. To register to track a nest, call 912.635.4137, email nest.trackers@gmail.com, or visit georgiaseaturtlecenter.org/join-us/nest-trackers/.

LIFETIME STORIES BEING SOUGHT

Are you part of Jekyll Island's history?
Let us know! The Jekyll Island Museum was recently awarded a grant from the Georgia Humanities Council to gather memories of Jekyll Island's "State Era." The museum is currently seeking stories related to island guests, residents and employees, during the State Era, which is defined as the time between 1947 and 1986.
It is the goal of the island museum to preserve not only physical artifacts, but also less concrete items, such as personal memories, said Museum Curator Gretchen Greminger.
Dates and facts from the island's past may exist in written documents, but personal memories help guests truly connect with and understand the historical significance and personal legacies connected with the island.
"An oral history is a second layer to the facts," Greminger said. "It gives history a personality."

For example, archival records document where residential lots were once available for lease. However, these records do not provide a clear picture of what it was like for those who wanted to obtain lots and live on the island in the 1960s and 70s.
Resident Bill Kiddy remembers that "getting a house on Jekyll Island when I first got here was very difficult.... if they put it up at 8 in the morning, it was sold by noon. It was a boom! People were just begging for houses on Jekyll Island then." He bought his house sight unseen before it even went on the market.
For Kiddy, those memories turned into a lifetime of enjoyment on Jekyll Island with his wife, JoAnn. "When you've had a life like we've have on Jekyll, you can't separate what was the most outstanding thing that happened, or when it happened. . . . We don't have many disappointments on the island...therefore most of our thoughts are pleasant."

Island legend Johnny Paulk has then served as the island's Golf Pro for more than 40 years, and to him, "It's the greatest move we ever made," he reflected. "This place is a dream. It really is. . . . I have been extremely, extremely lucky to be here."
Does your personal history included experiences on Jekyll Island between 1947 and 1986? If so, join in the project!
Visit the Jekyll Island Museum Facebook page (Facebook.com/ JekyllIslandMuseum), and click on the

"Take our Survey" link. This survey allows you to share a favorite memory from that time and be included in our memory collection initiative. For more information, contact Gretchen Greminger, at ggreminger@jekyllisland.com or 912.635.4034.
This project is supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly.

ISLAND CUISINE

SPICE UP YOUR JEKYLL SUMMER

After finishing the last bite his pork tenderloin and vegetable platter, Dennis Herring let out a satisfied sigh and smiled.
"That was fantastic," he grinned. "I can't wait to come back for more tomorrow."
This is the reply Driftwood Bistro owner Dan Dickerson hoped to hear when he opened his restaurant four years ago. He, too, wanted to provide a menu which revolved around varying tastes, prices points and dietary conditions.
What's more, Dickerson wanted his coastal-Southern bistro to be desired by guests, but equally loved by island residents. From the looks of the happy customers drifting into the dining room on a regular basis, Dickerson has achieved all these goals.
Driftwood Bistro has become wellknown for its $10 bottles of house wine, as well as its wide variety of fresh veggie platters. The menu features more than a dozen vegetable options, ranging from green beans to Harvard beets, all of which can be served alongside the entrees, or as a meal platter. A favorite veggie pick is the Lynn's Squash Casserole, named after island resident and former Driftwood employee Lynn Williams, who supplied the recipe.
"And you can't leave without trying OG's Fried Okra," Dickerson said, adding that the dish was named for his wife, who is lovingly referred to as OG. "It stands for `other grandma,' which our granddaughter calls her. It's

Place the Yellow Squash, Zucchini and Onions through the food processor using the slicer attachment. Cook, drain and allow to cool. In a separate bowl crack the eggs and add the Sour Cream, Mayonnaise, Cheddar Cheese, Heavy Whipping Cream and Ranch Dressing. Using a wire whisk, combine these ingredients. Add the cooked cooled squash mixture. Portion in proper containers and bake in a water bath at 275 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until center has reached 165 degrees and set. Remove casserole from the oven and top with toasted Panko bread crumbs.

a cute story and adds a personal touch to the menu. We like our diners, both locals and guests, to feel like they are part of the family."
Guests also enjoy the restaurant's wide use of Wild Georgia Shrimp, which is featured in several menu items, including the favorite shrimp and grits, as well as in shrimp creole, as a platters or as a main ingredient in several other dishes. All dishes can be served either as petite or full platter,

and many items are gluten free, vegetarian and vegan-friendly.
"We offer something for everyone," Dickerson said. "You'll come for the food, and come back for, well, the

food, but also the people."

SSI LIGHTHOUSE A TALL ORDER

As John Weaver and his son Hunt entered the Keeper's Dwelling Museum attached to the St. Simons Island lighthouse, they were promptly greeted by Larry Bacon, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society's very enthusiastic docent.
"Welcome, welcome. Come on in," Bacon said, waving the family from Dahlonega in from the cottage doorway. Instantly, Bacon began explaining the history of the cottage, pointing out fun facts about the lighthouse and the duties of its former keeper.
"This lighthouse is the only lighthouse on the east coast that is on a one-

minute loop, so if you're out in area waters, you know you're nearing St. Simons because the light takes one minute to get around."
Leading the family through the tour, Bacon points to the room at the Weaver's right, which houses the

Eugenia Price memorial room, and to their left, where the varying exhibits depicting different historical periods of Coastal Georgia can be found. Upstairs, Bacon explains, the rooms have been set up to replicate what the Keeper's Cottage would have looked like back when a keeper was actually needed.
"Now everything is automated," Bacon shrugs.

SUMMER WAVES
COOL DOWN AT SUMMER WAVES

A splish. A splash. A smile! That's what guests will find this season at Summer Waves on Jekyll Island! As the biggest and coolest water park in the Golden Isles, Summer Waves offers fun-seekers 11 acres of waterfilled family fun.

Now open for daily play all summer long, Summer Waves features nine thrilling ride to provide a great day for the whole family.

First, catch a wave in the Frantic Atlantic Wave Pool, which goes from 2 to 4 feet deep and features more than 500,000 gallons of churning water. Across the park, you'll need to hold on tight to that inner-tube as you plunge through Pirate's Passage, an exhilarating slide dropping down a 300-foot, five-story tower.
Nature's Revenge couples its thrilling elements, with two 40-foot slides that take riders on a twisting and turning, 360-degree journey, sending them on a spiraling dunk into the 300-foot catch pool.

Next it's the Force Three: a ride of three fun yet forceful slides. Flash Flood features a double inner tube slide spiraling down a 350-foot-long, 7-foot wide curvy slide; and Thunder and Lightning are twin slides that send you spiraling down 150-feet in fully-enclosed flumes. These rides triple the splash for triple the thrill!
Cool off from the Georgia heat with a refreshing

soak in the Splash Zone. Get dunked by our giant bucket, or enjoy kid-friendly water guns. Be sure to spend time in the calm, refreshing Turtle Creek. This slow-paced portion of the park offers inner-tubes that only go 3 miles per hour in a lazy river loop around the park.
For the smaller swimmers, try out the Kiddie Zone. Designed for children not tall enough for the bigger attractions, this park staple features two kiddie slides, waterfalls, and plenty of shade.
New this summer, the water park has added an extra 100-foot shade structure, as well as newly remodeled bathrooms for a cooler, more refreshing day at the park. Back this year are the morning water aerobics courses, and of course, Larry's Giant Subs will be open during park hours to offer guests hearty sandwiches, healthy salads and plenty of snacks.

NEW HOSPITAL

FACILITY NAMED

Southeast Georgia Health System has revealed the new name for its recently completed lodging facility, to honor one of the System's longstanding community supporters. The new center will be named Nunnally House, in recognition of the generous gift received from the Nunnally family, who have, for years, remained dedicated supporters of the Health System.
The Health System announced the gift earlier this year. Although the amount of the gift remains undisclosed, the Nunnally family made its purpose very specific: the donation is to be used to build a lodging facility for patients and their families. The Nunnally House will serve as short-term residential quarters for the visiting family members of cancer and critical care patients, CyberKnife patients from outside the primary service area, medical students rotating with the Health System's medical staff and on occasion, on-call staff.
Once complete, the Nunnally House will be located adjacent to the SGHS Brunswick Campus. Plans include a one-story residential building sectioned into three neighborhoods. The cancer patient residential neighborhood; the

critical care patient residential neighborhood; and the medical student/on-call residential neighborhood. For even greater convenience to these short-term residents, all units will include compact refrigerators, microwaves, and handicapaccessible restrooms with showers.
Each unit will be fully furnished and stocked with dinnerware and other essential items. A comfortable, welcoming common area will serve as the central entry point joining the three neighborhoods, and community laundry facilities will be available. The grounds will also feature a courtyard with two existing oak trees and parking areas to help provide a more homely feel for residents.
"We are very thankful to the Nunnally family for this gift and the opportunity to improve our patients and their family members' experience," said Gary R. Colberg, SGHS president and CEO. "Their generosity to this community is overwhelming and will positively impact many generations for years to come."

TURTLES SLOW BUT ON THE MOVE

They may have a reputation for being slow, but this summer, turtles are on the move! As the weather heats up along the coast, it is more and more likely that you will see turtles, most likely terrapins.
Diamondback terrapins are one of the easiest turtles to see along the causeway, and are a truly fascinating marsh creature.
Terrapins are the only turtle species in the world known to live their whole life in brackish water

(meaning a mixture of salt and fresh water). Found in the marsh habitat of the Barrier Islands, they have webbed feet with claws on each toe.
This adaptation (meaning a characteristic that helps an animal survive in its environment) allows them to swim well and also walk on land at low tide.
Another fun fact is that the female terrapin is almost twice as big as the male. Unlike mammals, reptiles lay eggs, but because of their hard shell, female

terrapins can't expand their bodies to accommodate eggs. A female terrapin grows to about 8 to10 inches long in comparison to a male and she lays 8 to 10 eggs which take about 65 days to incubate (meaning to keep at a constant temperature during egg development).
The next time you are on Jekyll, watch out for fertile turtles on the move and come visit us at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to learn more about the amazing diamondback terrapin!
