EVENT HIGHLIGHT
HIDDEN GEMS
REFLECT LURE
OF ISLAND
Uncover Jekyll Island's hidden gems this winter! Every January and February, Jekyll Island transforms into the ultimate game of hide and seek. Originally launched in 2002, this annual treasure hunt allows visitors to discover parts of the island they had yet to uncover and revisit their favorite spots, as well.
During the two-month event, Jekyll Island staff hides our treasure- artesian glass orbs- throughout the island. If you stumble upon one, it's yours for keeps.
New batches of the treasures are hidden daily throughout the Historic District, golf courses, sandy shores and wharfs. As seekers search out their prize, they likewise can take in all the island has to offer, hopefully uncovering a new island experience.
This game, though, represents more than an afternoon filled with treasure hunting. It likewise represents the storied past of Jekyll Island and details the historical purpose of these glass orbs. Island Treasures mimic glass floats once used on the nets of fishermen in the early 1900's. The floats would sometimes break loose and wash ashore for lucky beachcombers to find and keep.
Collecting these glass floats became a hobby in the 1950's when the commercial fishing industry began using plastic and Styrofoam floats, making glass fishing floats rare, highly sought after and valuable Island Treasures.
The glass orbs hidden on Jekyll Island are carefully-crafted works of art from the talented hands of glass-blowers from across the country. This eclectic group of artists uses the same techniques for their modern pieces that have been used for 2,000 years to create glass art pieces.
The treasure hunters lucky enough to find one of these prize orbs can register their Island Treasure at the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center to receive a biography of the respective artist and a certificate of authenticity. Treasure hunters who come up short, however, are not at a loss. The Jekyll Island Guest Information Center sells an array of our beautiful Island Treasures for purchase in-store throughout the year.

LOVE, JEKYLL STYLE
We've done the work for you this Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and couples everywhere are scrounging to find a perfect gift to say "I love you." This year, stray from the traditional red roses and chocolate hearts and make sure that special someone gets that special something. Give them Jekyll Island!
On Jekyll Island, lovebirds will find plenty of spots to celebrate their spark. From a stroll on the beach at sunset, to an elegant candlelit meal, Jekyll Island offers something for every cupid-minded couple.
Here, we've rounded up a list of heartfelt hotspots and ideas to help make your holiday both memorable and unique.
A Picnic on Driftwood Beach: Known for its breathtaking sunsets, Driftwood Beach is the ideal location to take in awe-inspiring views from Jekyll's sandy shores. Located on the northern end of the island, Driftwood Beach is at once secluded, rustic and refined, providing the perfect backdrop for creating a few sparks. A Carriage Ride through the Historic District: Sit back, relax and enjoy the legendary charm of the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark
District. Tour the 240-acre property where members of the Millionaire's Club once found solace. Take in the eloquent views while taking in perfect moments made in the company of your loved one.
A Horseback Ride on the Beach: Saddle up and take to the beach for a guided horseback ride through the sands. Expert guides lead guests through the island's peaceful forests and beachscape for an exciting, yet calm, experience. When shared with your Valentine, this outdoor adventure is sure to create lasting memories.
A Day on the Course: Whether a tried and true golfer or new to the game, playing a round on any of Jekyll Island's four golf courses is a great way to spend your lovefilled holiday. Even better, the Jekyll Island Golf Club is offering a special
deal for the special occasion. Golfers can opt in to the Valentine's Day golf special: a two-for-one deal. Pay for one player, and their spouse or partner can play for free. Call the clubhouse at 912.635.2368 to book your day of play.
An Elegant Dining Experience: Jekyll Island's variety of restaurant options provides everything hungry lovebirds need to create a magical meal. Whether dining by candlelight at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, enjoying a sunset meal at Latitude 31, or shucking oysters at the marina, the island has an assortment of elegant dining picks for every budget and taste.

BLACK HISTORY SERIES FEATURES MANY ACTIVITIES
This February, celebrate Black History Month with the Jekyll Island Museum! In honor of Black History Month, the Jekyll Island Museum will feature a series of special programs throughout the month, including a film screening with Civil Rights legend Andrew Young, a craft workshop, and a living history performance.
Special guest Ambassador Andrew Young will open the museum's featured February events with a public screening of his inspiring documentary, "Change in the Wind." Young, a former Atlanta Mayor, United States Congressman, and United Nations Ambassador, was a legend of the American Civil Rights Movement. As a young minister and Civil Rights leader, he was a close advisor and mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King in the 1960s. Today, he continues his humanitarian work across the world, receiving the Emmy for Lifetime Achievement in 2011.
In February, Young will present his documentary film, "Change in the Wind." This herald film offers a probing look at the unlikely relationship
between "Gone with the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell and Morehouse President Dr. Benjamin Mays, a relationship which developed in the deeply segregated South in the 1940s.
As part of the annual
Andrew Young
celebration of Black
History Month, Jekyll Island will host a screening of
"Change in the Wind" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February
12, at the Jekyll Island Convention Center.
Admission to the event is free, but reservations are
required. Book your seat by calling 912.635.4036.
Other featured programs in February include a Sweetgrass Basket-making Workshop. Workshop participants will enjoy one of the oldest art forms of African origin in America: making their own unique, hand-woven, sweetgrass basket. The workshop takes place from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.,
Saturday, February 16 in the historic Villa Ospo building on Jekyll Island.
The workshop is $45 and includes all materials. Since spaces are limited, reservations are required, and can be made by calling 912.635.4036.
Wrap up this historic month with "Jubilee!", a living history performance. The performance details the lives of black Union Army soldiers who arrived on Jekyll Island shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation and end of the Civil War. This living history portrayal by Civil War Reenactor Joseph McGill celebrates the coming of freedom and retells this remarkable moment in American history. The presentation takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 21 at the Jekyll Island Museum. Admission is $5 per person and reservations are required. Reserve your seat by call 912.635.4036.
For reservations to any of these exciting events, please call the Jekyll Island Museum at 912.635.4036, or visit the museum on Stable Road. You can also visit us online at www.jekyllisland.com.

HOT DEAL FOR COMMUNITY
Get your spoons handy and your bowls ready--the chili cookout is coming back to heat up your January! In partnership with the United Way of Coastal Georgia, the Jekyll Island Authority Fire Department is hosting the annual Chili Cookout and Bake Sale on January 18, with all funds raised donated to the United Way's Live United campaign.
Now in its third year, the hot and spicy cooking showcase features the signature Smokehouse Chili recipe from Deputy Fire Chief Robert Baggarly. After you've wiped your bowl clean and spiced up your palette, head over to the Bake Sale table for some sweet treats prepared by the talented cooks of the Jekyll Island community.
When you've had your fill of heat and sweet, grab a few United Way raffle tickets for your chance to win the Chili Cookout Prize Pack. Valued at more than $700, the package features a variety of prizes, including a kayak tour, a stay for two at the Hampton Inn & Suites, and a full day boat rental.
The Chili Cookout will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. January 18 at the Jekyll Island Fire Department. Tickets are $6, and include a bowl of chili, cornbread, crackers and a drink. We'll see you at the fire station!

The Jekyll Island Authority would like to remind our guests and residents that All-Terrain Vehicles and 4-Wheelers are not allowed on Island roadways, beaches or biking paths. In accordance with Georgia state law, off-road vehicles such as ATVs and 4-Wheelers are only permissible off public roadways; however, due to a Jekyll Island Authority ordinance, motorized vehicles of any type must only be driven on roads.
Golf carts are allowed on Jekyll Island roadways, as long as the vehicles follow new regulations enacted by the Georgia Legislature in January, 2012. Those regulations are that all golf carts have the following:
A braking system sufficient for the weight and passenger capacity of the vehicle, including a parking brake. A reverse warning device which is function when the cart backs up. A main power switch, which should be able to turn the vehicle both on and off. Head lights and tail lights, reflex reflectors, safety warning labels, horn, and rear view mirror. A seat belt for each passenger in the vehicle, to be worn at all times when the cart is moving. This law also requires that children be incompliance with the child safety seat and booster seat laws.
We at the Jekyll island Authority thank you for complying with these safety regulations.
