NATURE
FUN AT TIDELANDS
At 4-H Tidelands Nature Center, we encourage learning by doing. Our enthusiastic educators encourage excitement and wonder of the natural world. Jekyll's pristine natural environment is the perfect setting for a one-of-a-kind educational experience. Our homeschool days are open to all school age students. Our programs run every Friday in April from 10:45 to 11:45 am. Students can participate in a single day or sign up for the month. Each day is $6. All classes are rain or shine, so please make sure your students are dressed appropriately for the outdoors. Parent should attend the classes with their child (or make arrangements for another parent who is also attending to be responsible for your child). Call (912) 635-5032 or email dz@uga.edu.

JUNIOR JEKYLL
APRIL FULL
OF SPLENDOR
What is your favorite thing about the month of April? Is it April Fool's Day, a day full of jokes and laughter? Or is it the start of baseball season? Spring has sprung, as flowers bloom, bees start buzzing, and migrating birds return from their journeys south! For some of you, it may be about that time for your spring break! There are lots of things to love about April!
Let's not forget about Earth Day! Every year in April, people all over the United States, and the world, participate in Earth Day activities. Earth Day is a chance for all of us to show that we care about our environment and its sustainability.
Sustainability simply means "to keep in existence". We need to keep the Earth clean and healthy so it can be a great home for people, animals, and plants for many, many years to come!
What are some things we can do to make a difference this Earth Day, and every day? Some of our waste and garbage is biodegradable-- meaning it can decompose, or be broken down in nature, without using chemicals or machinery. Newspaper, for example, takes about
six weeks to decompose. An apple core will take about two months to decompose.
Unfortunately, most materials take many, many years to decompose, and some may never fully go away.
Just remember the three R's: reduce, reuse, recycle! Reduce using plastic bags at the grocery store and use a canvas one instead. Reuse margarine containers to store your leftover dinner, or decorate it and use it to store you hair barrettes or coin collection. Recycle those aluminum cans, glass bottles, and cardboard boxes.
Working hard to help the environment can't just happen in one day. Let's make every day Earth Day!
Earth Day 2013 will take place on April 22 this year. How will you celebrate? Jekyll Island has LOTS of environment-friendly activities!

SHELL-E-BRATE DATE SET
The Jekyll Island Authority, along with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, will give Earth Day their signature twist with the fifth annual Shell-E-Brate Earth Day event this April! An island nature festival held each year since 2008, the Earth Day fanfare features an array of family-friendly activities to help educate about the ecosystem and environment in which we live.
Being held April 13 on the front lawn of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, the eco-minded event features a variety of recycled-material crafts, greenthemed exhibits and environmentally-based vendors to provide a unique experience.
During the event, visitors can test their sorting skills at the Recycle Toss, partake in a honey tasting, and try their hand at candle-making or painting a mini-masterpiece at the Styrofoam Plate Press. Extra curious guests can dig into an edible treat of mud, dirt and worms at Aeration Station, or speak with experts about the ins and outs of sea turtle care. The friendly staff and volunteers from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center will be on hand to answer any questions about the delicate balance of our planet and oceans. Children and adult both will have a blast during this day set to encourage discovery, wonder and eco-education!
Shell-A-Brate Earth Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 13. Admission to the festival is free, and admission to the Center is $7 for adults, $5 for children and free for children under 3 years of age.

VOICES OF JEKYLL ISLAND
The Reginald S. Huidekoper family visited Jekyll Island for Spring Break each year from 1936 to 1942. Daughter Bettie recently shared fond memories of her childhood holidays at the Jekyll Island Club with the staff of the Jekyll Island Museum, as part of an ongoing oral history project.
Bettie's often humorous memories depict Jekyll Island as a playful place, full of fun and misadventure. One time, she and her brother Pete drove to Faith Chapel to pick up their mother from service. Just outside the chapel, "the fool redbug horn honked itself and it wouldn't stop" until the garage man finally disconnected the battery. "My mother was inside praying, `Please God, don't let that be my children!"
With moments like these, family trips to Jekyll Island were certainly memorable. "Oh, how I loved it!" Bettie recalled. "The planners at Jekyll
made it fun for everyone. They seemed to plan a tourney of some sort every week or two, catering to all tastes."
In fact, her father helped organize a swimming and diving tournament. At 12 years old, she won her first diving trophy on Jekyll, competing against Harvard and Yale swimming team boys. Looking back, she suspects that the mint julep cup she won from the diving board "may have been a bit of a set up."
She also took lessons from Tennis Pro Frank Bonneau. One rainy day, while practicing serves on the indoor court, lightning zapped through the skylight and struck down the instructor's tennis racquet and his arm. "He was amazing," she marveled. "He stood stock still for a moment, shook his head, walked in circles for a minute or two, then said, `Wow. That buzzed.' And continued
The Huidekoper children (Henry, Peter, Ann, and Elizabeth), circa 1936.
with the lesson."

The family's annual vacations halted in 1942, due to World War II. Yet Bettie's extraordinary memories of life at the Jekyll Island Club, full of moonlit dances and tennis tourneys, live on as part of the Jekyll Island Museum's oral history collection.
The museum is now planning a new oral history project to record memories of Jekyll Island from the Early State Era, 1947-1986. If you are interested in sharing your stories, photographs, or artifacts from Jekyll Island's early years as a state-owned island, please contact Gretchen Greminger, at 912-635-4034.

Remote areas can pose a safety issue. Please be aware when entering remote areas as designated on the map. Emergency response time may be delayed while attempts are made to ascertain exact location and quickest route. If calling 911, you will be asked to identify your location. This is best done by having landmarks in view, and being aware of direction and distance. Also make note of your entry point into a remote area. Each beach crossover is numbered.

Paired with complimentary hushpuppies, the Fin's Chicken and Andouille Gumbo is the perfect addition to any spring day. Now, you can try this zesty dish at home, with this house recipe. The only thing we can't provide is that great beachfront view. Otherwise- enjoy!

13 CONFERENCE
SOUTHERN C SUMMIT
Founded in the summer of 2012, The Southern Coterie is an online social network dedicated to covering all things Southern. An audience that sweeps the Southern portion of the country has come together through this social network to compile travel information, new favorite finds and general lifestyle topics, all based on their unique versions of this unique region.
Since launching less than a year ago, The Southern C, as the outlet has affectionately been nicknamed, has brought together more than 1,000 followers and dozens of acclaimed Southern bloggers and writers, who are collectively sharing in a keenly Southern experience.
Behind this new social media powerhouse are two Southern women, Cheri Leavy and Whitney Wise
Long, who are both experienced in the publishing world, and have a strong desire to share their muchloved Southern culture with the rest of the world.
"The Southern C grew out of our own identity with the South," said Leavy, who is also the publisher of several publications, including Guide2Athens, Coastal Illustrated and Bulldawg Illustrated. "We have seen a trend of late, where Southern culture is king, where people in different areas of the nation and world are also identifying with the Southern way of living, adopting that gentile charm and quirky nature. But no one was bringing this culture to an online arena. The South is full of positive messages and great writers, and it seems only fair that we share those traits with a broader audience."
In step with this philosophy, Leavy and Long
now want to share the south and The Southern C experience with an even bigger audience. This spring, The Southern C, in conjunction with Southern Living magazine and the Jekyll Island Authority, will host the inaugural Southern C Summit at the oceanfront Jekyll Island Convention Center. Being held May 1 to 3, this three-day summit will offer workshops, lectures, and networking opportunities, all tied to good times and higher online education for both bloggers and business owners.
Lending their expertise to summit guests will be several well-known marketing mavens and social media authorities, who will probe exclusively into the South's online landscape. For more information and to register for the summit, visit www.thesoutherncsummit.com or www.thesouthernc.com.

EVENTS
TOUR OF HOMES WELCOMES YOU
Southern hospitality is no myth on Jekyll Island. As much will be proven this spring, when the residents of Jekyll Island open their hearts and homes to you! This April, the Jekyll Island Authority and Jekyll Island Garden Club will team up to present the Island Inspired Tour of Homes event. During the tour, attendees will take a behind-the-scenes look at the homes, personalities and people who create the unique daily culture of Jekyll Island.
The six homes on the tour were chosen by members of the Garden Club, who identified each house for its special sense of character, ambiance and individuality. From Asian modernist to beach chic casual, each home offers a different take on what it means to exude comfort and charm.
When planning the tour, members of the Garden Club were hoping to achieve one goal: to showcase the overall essence that makes up the island.
"We want people to see how revitalization is not just a Jekyll Island Authority goal, but also is a goal that has been taken seriously by the island's residents," said Ginger Thomas, a Garden Club member and coorganizer of the event. "Just as the island has undergone revitalization, so have the homes. On the outside, our homes look like everyday houses. Once you come inside and see the amazing work that has been done by our residents, from complete remodeling to just touching up a room or two, you'll be amazed."
The Tour of Homes will be held April 27. Tour-takers will be escorted to homes on a scheduled, guided trolley tour, or may take the tour on a bicycle. The first tour leaves from Great Dunes Park at 10 a.m. and the final tour will depart at 3 p.m. Transported trolley tours are $25 per person in advance, and bicycle tours are $20 in advance. Tickets on the day of the tour are $30 per person for the trolley tour, and $25 per person for bicycle tours. Bicycle tourtakers must provide their own bike. Tickets include a beachside garden party for refreshments, held at Great Dunes Park. To purchase tickets online or find a list of outlets where tickets are available, visit jekyllisland.com.

Nearly two decades ago, SouthEast Adventure Outfitters tapped into this aquatic theme by introducing guests and residents of the Golden Isles to these water-heavy activities.
This month, SouthEast Adventure is offering a kayaking skills class and clinic on April 13, which will help new kayakers understand local waterways and learn more advanced techniques. Also in April, guides will host a two-day trip to Cumberland Island, from April 5 to 7, which will include hiking, camping and kayaking for the whole family.
Daily, the guides at SouthEast Adventure take guests out on kayak tours, as well as paddleboarding excursions, fishing tours and nature boat cruises, all of which highlight the true beauty of this coastal paradise. Need more than a few hours on the water? They can handle that too, with the multi-day charter tours which take visitors throughout this watery region of the world.
Alongside these field trips, SouthEast Adventure guides will likewise offer daily two- and three-hour kayaking trips throughout the month.
If you can't make it to SouthEast Adventure this month, be sure to mark off key dates in May. The guides will host a Women's Kayaking, Yoga, and Paddleboarding Weekend May 3 to 5, as well as an overnight trip down the Altamaha River on May 23 to 24. Both events promise to showcase the wonders
of our coastal waterways with guests. Aside from workshops and classes, SouthEast Adventure also provides outdoor gear, from t-shirts and hoodies to backpacks, tents and even kayaks.
If you're headed outdoors, first head to SouthEast Adventure. They've got you covered! Visit southeastadventure.com, call 912.638.6732 or email kayak@southeastadventure.com.
