HISTORY

`TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

By Andrea Marroquin
Clement Clarke Moore wrote the famous poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1822 for his children and it was published for the first time the following year.
The poem begins with the words, "'Twas the night before Christmas" and vividly paints a picture of the "right jolly old elf " in the minds of generations to come - dressed in fur, with a snowy white beard, round belly, and rosy cheeks.
Edith Pulitzer, the daughter of Jekyll Island Club Member and newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer, married William S. Moore, Clement Moore's grandson. The couple honored Clement Moore's legacy by celebrating their union with a Christmas ceremony.
The couple exchanged vows on December 21, 1911. Christmas

colors provided inspiration for the wedding decorations, which included palms, greenery, poinsettia, and holly.
The Pulitzers were frequent patrons of the Jekyll Island Club during Edith's childhood. Her father was a charter member of the Jekyll Island Club and often brought his family to the island retreat. In December of 1894, Pulitzer and his daughters enjoyed the Christmas season on Jekyll Island, vacationing in Hollybourne Cottage.
Following her marriage, Edith (now Mrs. William S. Moore) returned to the island, staying at the Jekyll Island Club Annex. Clement Clarke Moore, her son, holidayed with the family on this occasion. This young island guest was named for his famous great-grandfather, who had made such wonderful holiday memories for so many children.
Today, it continues to be a holiday tradition to read Moore's poem, which

is also often referred to as "Twas the Night Before Christmas," wishing a "Happy Christmas to all."
To discover other Club Member connections to beloved Christmas traditions call or visit the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road, 912-6354036. The Jekyll Island Museum offers special holiday tours through

the month of December to share seasonal stories from the time of the Jekyll Island Club.
Come hear how Club members and employees celebrated the season and see how traditions and decorations changed through time inside the period-decorated cottages of the historic district.

13 ISLAND TREASURES
UNCOVER ISLANDIsTlaRndETArSeaUsuRreEs S

Uncover Jekyll Island's hidden gems this winter. Every January and February, Jekyll Island transforms into the ultimate game of hide and seek. Originally launched in 2002, this annual treasure hunt allows visitors to discover parts of the island they had yet to uncover and revisit their favorite spots as well.
During the two-month event, Jekyll Island staff hides our treasure - artesian glass orbs - throughout the island. If you should stumble upon one, it's yours for keeps.
New batches of the treasures are hidden daily throughout the Historic District, golf courses, sandy shores, and wharfs. As seekers search out their prize, they likewise can take in all the island has to offer, hopefully uncovering a new island experience.

This game, though, represents more than an afternoon filled with treasure hunting. It likewise represents the storied past of Jekyll Island and details the historical purpose of these glass orbs. Island Treasures mimic glass floats once used on the nets of fishermen in the early 1900's. The floats would sometimes break loose and wash ashore for lucky beachcombers to find and keep. Collecting these glass floats became a hobby in the 1950's when the commercial fishing industry began using plastic and Styrofoam floats, making glass fishing floats rare, highly sought after and valuable Island Treasures.
The glass orbs hidden on Jekyll Island are carefully crafted works of art from the talented hands of glassblowers from across the country. This eclectic group of artists uses the same techniques for their modern pieces that have been used for 2,000 years to create glass art.

Won't you join us on Jekyll Island? You never know what you may uncover.

For more information, call 912.635.3636 or visit our website www.jekyllisland.com.
