EVENT HIGHLIGHT
BULLDAWGS AND GATORS SQUARE OFF ON COURSE
The Jekyll Island Georgia-Florida Golf Classic is a tradition on the Georgia coast with 2011 marking the 32nd year of the tournament. Dates for this year's tournament are October 27-28. A precursor to the Georgia-Florida Football Game on Saturday, October 29, the tournament provides a platform for fans to show their team spirit in a friendly competition.
tween the University of Georgia and the University of Florida in Jacksonville, FL. While the Georgia-Florida football game is played at Jacksonville's EverBank Field, Jekyll Island is only a 90-minute drive away. Many fans enjoy the tradition of staying in the Jekyll Island-St. Simons Island area and taking advantage of the easy drive to the stadium.
The tournament entry fee is $300, inclusive of tax, and provides for three full days of golf, food, drinks and activities. In addition to the traditional two days of tournament play on Thursday and Friday, this year, players can also take advantage of a third day of golf with an optional Wednesday practice round. By popular demand, eightsomes are back! So, team up with another foursome for fun-filled days of golf. This year with one shotgun start at 9:00 a.m., everyone will start at the same time and finish at the same time. All three of Jekyll Island's championship golf courses will be used during tournament play. Teams will be flighted after the first round using a multiple course index, providing more opportunities to win prizes. Plus, this year, players have a chance to win one of three Nalley Automotive vehicles through hole-inone contests!
Over 400 golfers compete in the tournament and, between rounds, enjoy celebrating with friends at the traditional Wednesday night Cocktail Party and Thursday night Low Country Boil. Non-players can also choose from a selection of activities including putting contests and a wine & cheese tasting. Everything leads up to the Saturday gridiron showdown be-
Players are encouraged to register early. Registration is limited to the first 108 teams and includes green fees for the practice round and tournament, electric cart rental, free access to the cocktail party and low country boil for player and guest, breakfast and lunch on tournament days, cocktails and drinks at both parties and on the course, non-player activities, tournament hats, and chances to win one of dozens of prizes.
This year's tournament is sponsored by Coca-Cola, Budweiser, Club Car, Emerald Princess II Casino, Peachtree Pest Control, Latitude 31, Brasfield and Gorrie, Nalley, Beachview Club Hotel and Bulldawg Illustrated.
Latitude 31 and the Rah Bar will be the official happy hour location for the 2011 Georgia-Florida Golf Classic. From 4 PM - 7 PM on Wednesday and Thursday players and their guests can enjoy a happy hour gathering at the Rah Bar.

ROUSING SUCCESS: PATROLS HELP INCREASED NUMBERS
It is 3 o'clock in the morning. The Research Department at Jekyll Island Authority's Georgia Sea Turtle Center is sound asleep, at last. After a whirlwind nesting season, sea turtle activity has crawled to a trickling number of nests hatching out.
As usual, loggerhead sea turtles were the sole nesters on Jekyll's beaches this year with the exception of one leatherback who laid a nest that never hatched out. Jekyll Island's sea turtle nesting project is one of a few remaining studies that employs night patrol for saturation tagging.
We patrol the beach repeatedly every night during nesting season to catch and tag every female we encounter. This approach lends a better understanding of the population status of our local nesters.
The season began with a bang in May and ended almost as suddenly at the end of July. Overall, we had 417 emergences, to include false crawls where a turtle attempts but doesn't nest. Of those, 177 were nests (compared to 140 last year) and we observed 127 being laid.
Thus far we have had 143 nests hatch. Since each female nests multiple times and, aided by genetics analysis, we estimate that 50 - 60 individual females used our beach this summer and laid almost
15,000 eggs! Hearty congratulations go out to the 2011 turtle
patrol team of Emily Walker, Alia Chisty, Lisa Harrelson, Jake Martin, Breanna Ondich, Greg Skupien,
Ashley Soltysiak, and Emily Stein who made this season a huge success.

TIDELANDS NATURE CENTER
AS FALL ENTERS, THE FLOWERS THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'
Autumn comes gently on Jekyll Island. Most of our coastal trees are naturally evergreen, but all that green doesn't mean we don't have seasons our wildflowers are constantly changing and fall is a fine time to enjoy them and the migrating butterflies they attract.
Purple Wildflowers
Sea-Lavender This wildflower only grows in the high salt marsh. Look for foot-high delicate sprays with many small purple flowers.
White Wildflowers
Romerillo This large-growing wildflower is found on road and trail-sides. Look for the white daisy-like flowers with yellow centers.
Salt-marsh Aster This marsh wildflower blends with the marsh grass until fall when the white daisy-like flowers give it away.
Yellow Wildflowers
Seaside Goldenrod This large, somewhat fleshyleaved goldenrod prefers to grow in the low meadows behind the dunes.
Dune Camphorweed This low-to-shrubby plant grows in dry sandy soils such as coastal dunes. The bright yellow flowers top the branch tips. Crush a leaf with your fingers to smell the strong camphor odor
Butterflies
Many butterflies, including the famous Monarch, migrate south to avoid cold winter weather but the most numerous is the Gulf Fritillary. Enjoy these large orange butterflies as you look for Jekyll's fall flowers. For guided nature walks,
guided marsh kayak tours, or live exhibits of Jekyll's plants and animals, contact 4-H Tidelands Nature Center at (912) 635-5032 for more information. Tidelands (located beside Summer Waves) is a University of Georgia/4-H Program. Open to the public daily, $2 admission.

FOLKLORE, RUMOR AND MYTH
What goes bump in the night on Jekyll? You do! Every Friday night in October on the Folklore, Rumor & Myth Tour, guests have the opportunity to experience the supernatural side of the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District.
On dark October nights, the moss-draped live oaks and the shuttered historic homes of the Jekyll Island historic district go from splendid to spooky. The old cottages creak as they settle for the night and the period light fixtures cast long shadows.
In these haunting surroundings, Jekyll Island Museum guides tell tales of restless souls and spirit sightings, setting the mood for the Halloween season. Nearly every cottage has some deep mystery or restless soul associated with a grand love story, an untimely death, a great misadventure, or a little mischief.
Tour guides lean on their professional knowledge of the island's past to interpret the supernatural happenings. The tour is peppered with stories of Jekyll Island's historic characters gathered from letters, diaries, old newspapers, and word of mouth, in efforts to explain the reported sightings.
As twilight falls, the tour weaves its way throughout the 240-acre historic district to locations of reported spirit sightings. Guests are then led inside one of the century-old cottages for spine-tingling stories as darkness descends.
The tour departs from the Jekyll Island Museum at 100 Stable Road on Friday nights, from October 7-28, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The tour is recommended for ages 10 and above. Call 912-635-4036 for details.

Remote Areas Caution
Remote areas can pose a safety issue. Please be aware when entering remote areas as designated on the map. Emergency response time may be delayed while attempts are made to ascertain exact location and quickest route. If calling 911, you will be asked to identify your location. This is best done by having landmarks in view, and being aware of direction and distance. Also make note of your entry point into a remote area. Each beach crossover is numbered.
* Parking Fee
The Parking Fee for entry to Jekyll Island is used to support conservation and stewardship of the natural and cultural resources of the Island. Special projects funded by the parking fee include beach crossovers, bicycle path extensions, and picnic area improvements. Annual decals can be purchased at the greeting station.

NATURE
BOOK CAPTURES JEKYLL BEAUTY
Jekyll Island's undisturbed beauty, combined with its pleasant year-round weather and refreshing ocean breezes, provides a breathtaking backdrop for a variety of wonderful experiences. Located midway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida, Jekyll Island is approximately 5,700 acres and the smallest of Georgia's barrier islands.
As a tribute to the Island's allurement, the Jekyll Island Authority has published Jekyll Island The Nearest Faraway Place, a coffee table book recognizing the inspired talent of residents and guests and their ability to capture unique perspectives of our cherished Island.
During the period of March through September 2010, a competition was conducted to discover photographs of, and poems about, Jekyll Island. Scenic images and inspiring narratives portray-
ing Jekyll's beach and marsh, sunrise and sunsets, wildlife, nature, historic landmarks, and views from above were sought for inclusion in this project. Submissions included 70 from Georgia, 17 from different states, 4 from Canada and 1 from the United Kingdom.
Results of the competition were announced and the winning selections are featured in the commemorative publication. Copyright of the selected works and all rights to publish became property of Jekyll Island Authority.
Jekyll Island The Nearest Faraway Place is now currently available at the Visitor Information Center, the Commissary, the Jekyll Island Book Store, the Jekyll Island Museum Store, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and Hattie's Books in Brunswick.

KEEP JEKYLL BEAUTIFUL ISLAND REGULATIONS
SAFETY ADVISORY
Beaches, sand dunes & turtles
Fill in sand castles and holes on the beach. Keep off the dunes. Keep your dog off the dunes. No fires on the beach Keep away from marked turtle nests. No Flashlights on the Beach Electronic devices for detecting metals, minerals and
artifacts are prohibited.
Vehicles
Obey posted speed limits. Park in designated areas only. Watch out for terrapins on the causeway.
Wildlife & endangered species
Do not feed wild animals. Don't get between young birds and the dunes so they are
not separated from their parents.
Shells and mementos
Do not keep live sand dollars. No metal detectors on Jekyll Island.
Motor vehicles
Allowed on paved roads only. Speed limit is 35mph (unless otherwise posted). Overnight parking in public areas not permitted. Bikes should be ridden on bike paths; if necessary to ride on the street, please keep to the far right in single file Helmets required for riders 16 and under.
Safety tips
The heat will dehydrate you quickly. Drink plenty of water. Protect your skin with sunscreen and insect repellent. While on the beach observe tide changes and use caution on sand bars.
Jekyll Island's beach is open
year-round; swim at your own risk. Sand dunes are natural buffers which protect inland areas from tides, winds and storms. Use crossovers for beach access and avoid walking on sand dunes. State law prohibits cutting sea oats. Take only empty shells and dead sand dollars.
Pets
Keep pets on a leash. Clean up after your pet. Pet waste receptacles are located at beach crossovers. Stray animals are subject to impoundment.
Fishing
Recycle your fishing line-- don't throw it in the trash.
A fishing license is required to fish or use a cast or seigning net on Jekyll Island.
Trash & Litter
Do Not Litter. Just don't. Please recycle. No glass is allowed on the beach.
Help preserve Jekyll's natural wonders
By law, 65% of Jekyll must remain undeveloped. Sea Turtle nesting season is May to August. Minimize beach lighting. Do not approach nesting female turtles. Do not disturb resting birds. Avoid the primary dunes during Spring and
Summer nesting seasons, especially on the Island's south end. Migratory birds are protected by law. Be aware of deer when driving, especially at night. Please do not hand feed any animal. State law prohibits feeding alligators.
Thank you for helping to preserve a way of life on Jekyll Island.
Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency medical response team. Beachgoers - pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.
We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.

TURTLE TAG A GREAT WAY TO FUND RESEARCH AT GSTC
Proceeds fund sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education programs
The Jekyll Island Authority's Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) license tag was launched last year by the Georgia State Department of Revenue and the Department of Natural Resources.
If you are a Georgia resident with a registered vehicle and you are interested in purchasing the special GSTC license tag, the
initial cost is $80 plus tax; renewals are $55 plus tax. Additional charges may be related to your vehicle registration and not affected by the special tag purchase. The majority of the proceeds benefits sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education programs at the Center.
Purchasing a specialty GSTC tag is simple!
You can purchase online at: http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/registration/index.aspx
Or, you can purchase a specialty GSTC tag in person at your local Georgia county tag office. If you reside in Glynn County, visit the Glynn County Tax Commissioner's Office to purchase.
