swim, bike, run & learn
With hundreds of athletes registered to compete in the Turtle Crawl Sprint Triathlon, Olympic Triathlon,
5K & 10K beach run, this year's event stands to be bigger and better than ever!

The mission of the Turtle Crawl Triathlon & Nest Fest is to educate athletes and their families about sea turtles and the environment they live in. With that mission in mind, athletes on the run courses will enjoy sea turtle trivia questions presented by Brasfield & Gorrie. At the finish line, families can enjoy Nest Fest, an eco-friendly festival full of fun crafts and activities for kids. Eco-friendly elements added to the event include race awards made out of recycled glass and metal, cloth tote for goodie bags, and recycling containers around the finish line and transition area. At the finish line, athletes will be treated to a delicious meal catered by LongHorn Steakhouse and Dunkin' Donuts. Cyctosport will be on-site to refuel the athletes with samples of milk, and, Coca-Cola will rehydrate the athletes with Dasani water. After a

little food and drink, athletes can cool off at Pro Pool and Spa's Splash Zone or relax tired muscles with free sports massages by Family Health Chiropractic. Events culminate with the release of a rehabilitated sea turtle at 12:30 PM.

The 2011 Turtle Crawl Triathlon & Nest Fest is sponsored by Coca-Cola, Southern Eagle Distributors, Nalley Automotive, Brasfield & Gorrie, MuscleMilk, Southeast Georgia Health System, Latitude 31, Beachview Tent Rentals, Cliff Bar, Monkeywrench Bicycles, Family Health Chiropractic, Pro Pool and Spa, and LongHorn Steakhouse. fishing
Well folks, spring has officially sprung and summer won't be far behind. It's been a long time since I've seen weather this good this early in the year. And, with that, the fishing has been getting better by the week as water temperatures rise. The whiting bite is picking up, with good numbers being caught in the sounds. Whiting is a member of the Drum family and is excellent table fare. These fish can easily be caught on the bottom with a small piece of shrimp or squid. This makes for a great trip for those with kids and those who are looking for a good fish fry! The Bull Reds, large mature Redfish up to 40 pounds, have arrived for their biannual visit to our waters. While not legal to keep at this size, they make for a great fight and an even better picture. Sharks, sheephead and sea trout are being caught as well. Also, the dolphin sightseeing tours have been great for this time of year. Don't miss your chance to view these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat!

Two schools in particular have incorporated this project into their curriculum - St. Simons Christian School and C.B. Greer Elementary.
In February, St. Simons Christian School took some of their students on a field trip to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center in order to gain the inspiration to begin their sea turtle artwork. C.B. Greer Elementary created a contest specific to their school to help motivate and inspire student participation in the art donation project. The student who submitted the best art work at C.B. Greer Elementary won a free art lesson at their

The Diamondback Defender Project
The program will enable the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to sustain and continue the research, rehabilitation and education conducted on Diamondback Terrapins.

The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is a small-to-medium sized turtle found in estuaries and salt marshes along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Cape Cod to Texas. The nesting season in Georgia occurs from early May until mid-July. Nesting typically takes place during the day.
Over the last century, populations of diamondback terrapins in coastal Georgia and other parts of their range have been adversely affected by a variety of human activities, such as mortality on roads. Two to three hundred reproductively mature female diamondback terrapins are injured and killed by motor vehicles

each year on the Jekyll Island causeway during the nesting season. The causeway is a perfect spot for the terrapins to nest because it is high ground and unlikely to flood.
It is our responsibility to SLOW DOWN while driving on the causeway during the terrapin nesting season and watch out for them while they are crossing. If you observe a terrapin crossing, or find an injured terrapin on the road, first make sure it is safe for you to pull over and get out of your car to help the terrapin cross. Carefully pick the terrapin up and place her off the road in the direction she was travelling prior to picking her up. If you find an injured terrapin,

please call the Jekyll Island Authority's Georgia Sea Turtle Center at 912-635-4444 as soon as possible.
Do your part for Diamondback Terrapin Conservation by visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center's Gift Shop to purchase a Diamondback Defender Project Adoption Package. The proceeds go towards assisting with this exciting conservation effort.

Turning Back the ClockBy Andrea Marroquin
A landscape restoration project is turning back the clock for one of the first cottages encountered upon entering Jekyll Island's historic district from the south. Moss Cottage is being returned to the way it looked 100 years ago when William and Savannah Struthers were the owners.

Moss Cottage, one of 33 historic structures within the Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District, was built for the Struthers family in 1896. William Struthers, the owner of a Philadelphia marble firm, was one of many notable figures who regularly brought his

family south to enjoy a mild winter of outdoor activities at the Jekyll Island Club.
With funding assistance from the Jekyll Island Garden Club, Moss Cottage will soon return to its former glory. It will be the eighth historic district cottage to have its landscaping restored to the days of the Jekyll Island Club. Photographic and documentary research assisted in the re-creation of site plans for the century-old landscape. Vegetation to be planted includes cabbage palms, date palms, kumquat trees, red cedars, yuccas, emerald green boxwood hedges, and annuals.

with landscapes in the spirit of their original design. These rehabilitated landscapes include the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, Crane Cottage, Cherokee, Sans Souci, all the shops along Pier Road, the Island Sweets Shoppe, Furness Cottage, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and the Morgan Center. Spring is a delightful season to explore Jekyll Island's beautifully landscaped historic district.
To discover more about Jekyll Island's historic cottages and their famous owners, visit the Jekyll Island Museum at 100 Stable Road, 912-635-4036.

Other properties located within the historic district, while not exact restorations, also have been renewed

hollybourne
May is National Historic Preservation Month, a time when the preservation of our past is honored. On Jekyll Island, we honor Historic Preservation every day as work continues to care for our historic sites.

Hollybourne Cottage is one of four buildings in the Historic Landmark District not yet restored or rehabilitated and open to the public. However, that does not mean that work does not progress. For over 10 years Hollybourne has been the subject of much behind-the-scenes work.
A partnership with the Getty Conservation Institute has studied ways to solve moisture and humidity problems in the building. Interns, foreign exchange students and university classes have documented the home and learned preservation methods within its walls. And, during the winter months, a small band of volunteers have worked to restore

windows, shutters, porches, and floors.
What started out with one man more than 10 years ago has grown into a team of five dedicated winter residents who spend their time on Jekyll Island helping the staff of the Jekyll Island Museum preserve Hollybourne.
For many winters, Dick Tennyson of Chestertown, New York worked to restore 88 pairs of original shutters. This work progressed slowly. As the shutters neared completion, and the first shutters restored needed re-painting, Dick began expanding his team. This winter, Dick was joined by Sharon Gilbert and Judy McClure of Wallworth, New York, Rudy Katzenberger of Boontown, New Jersey,

and Bob Crossett of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. An amazing amount of work was completed including: the restoration of 2 windows; replacement of a rotting support beam; replacement of floor joists and sub-flooring in the entry hall; cleaning and conservation of woodwork and flooring on the second floor and main stair case; and, the repair of porch stair railing.
To celebrate Preservation Month and the recently completed work, Hollybourne will be available in the "Cottage of the Day" tour at the Jekyll Island Museum on select days in May. Please call 635-4036 for dates and times.

beach advisory

Beach Advisory

What is a beach swimming advisory? The Georgia Beach Monitoring Program conducts weekly tests at all Georgia beaches that are active with public use. The program relies on weekly water tests to measure bacteria levels at several points along Jekyll Island's beach.

Should a test indicate an elevated level of bacteria, the local Glynn County Health Department will post a "Swimming Advisory." Because ingesting sea water with elevated levels

of bacteria may cause illness, a beach swimming advisory means the Health Department recommends you not swim at the designated beach. However, the beach is open; please feel free to enjoy recreational activities. Swimming, while not recommended, is safe if water is not ingested in large quantities. Small children or people with weak immune systems are at greater risk. Bacteria from the water can also enter the body through open wounds. Fish caught in these waters are just as safe to eat as in any other waters, and should be washed and cooked thoroughly before eating. Consuming raw or undercooked

seafood poses health risks independent of the swimming advisories.
The frequent advisories on Jekyll Island, primarily at St. Andrews picnic area, are related to the natural wildlife activity along the southern portion of the island. Once a beach tests positive for elevated bacteria, an advisory is issued via public notice and a sign at the beach access point is changed to indicate the warning. Monitoring tests are conducted daily and, once tests indicate normal levels, the advisory is removed via public notice and the sign is changed back to normal. Due to the

frequency of these advisories at St. Andrews picnic area the public notices often are not included in local news reports. The Beach Monitoring Program is a cooperative effort of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Resources Division and the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health.

The south beach is defined as the area from the boardwalk at the South Dunes Picnic area south and around the southern tip of the island and north to a point 2,000 feet south of the St. Andrews Picnic area. This shall NOT apply to any animal operating as a guide dog or performing similar assistance for a disabled person. See map on page 11.
Pets on ALL other beach areas, trails, sidewalks, bike paths or areas other than the premises of the pet's owner must be on a hand held leash not more than sixteen (16) feet long.

Safety tips
The heat will dehydrate you quickly. Drink plenty of water. Protect your skin with sunscreen and insect repellent. While on the beach observe tide changes and use caution on sand bars.
Jekyll Island's beach is open
year-round; swim at your own risk. Sand dunes are natural buffers which protect inland areas from tides, winds and storms. Use crossovers for beach access and avoid walking on sand dunes. State law prohibits cutting sea oats. Take only empty shells and dead sand dollars.

Keep pets on a leash. Clean up after your pet. Pet waste receptacles are located at beach crossovers. Stray animals are subject to impoundment.

Help preserve Jekyll's natural wonders
By law, 65% of Jekyll must remain undeveloped. Sea Turtle nesting season is May to August. Minimize beach lighting. Do not approach nesting female turtles. Do not disturb resting birds. Avoid the primary dunes during Spring and Summer nesting seasons, especially on the Island's south end. Migratory birds are protected by law. Be aware of deer when driving, especially at night. Please do not hand feed any animal. State law prohibits feeding alligators.

Thank you for helping to preserve a way of life on Jekyll Island.

Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency medical response team. Beachgoers - pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.

We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.
