EVENT HIGHLIGHT
HORTON HOUSE LIVING HISTORY
On Saturday, June 18th, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., visit Horton House and relive the diplomacy of nations that took place on Jekyll Island 275 years ago. Enjoy music and food with historic figures from the past, and sample the daily life of long ago through a variety of hands-on activities. In 1736 cultures collided as William Horton entertained British, Spanish, and Creek leaders on Jekyll Island. In commemoration of those events, re-enactors portraying General Oglethorpe, William Horton, Don Pedro Lamberto, Don Manuel d'Arcy, and Hyllispilli will once again gather on Jekyll Island for a joint living history program. This annual event, offered by Fort Frederica National Monument and the Jekyll Island Museum, is in its fifth year. "Every student in the State of Georgia learns about General Oglethorpe and the Creek," said John Hunter, Director of Historic Resources for the Jekyll Island Authority. "This is a great chance to see and experience a significant moment in time, when they were negotiating with Spanish dignitaries from St. Augustine, Florida for the future of the colonies." During the course of the event, a bagpiper will provide entertainment from the picnic grounds. Right on Q Barbeque will recreate historic meals served on this occasion 275 years ago. Meal tickets can be pre-purchased from the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road or from www.jekyllisland.com, for $10 plus tax until June 14. The day of the event, meals will be available inside Horton House for $12. Learn about colonial crafts such as carding and spinning wool, brewing beer, and blacksmithing. Practice making change with pieces of eight. Enjoy the finest luxury goods
of the day, exchanged as presents by the diplomats. Watch displays of 18th century military might as interpreters dressed as the King's troops put on musket demonstrations. Horton, acting as an ambassador, was arrested as a spy by the Spanish at St. Augustine in May of 1736. During his captivity the Spanish made advances into Jekyll Sound and Fort Frederica, but were turned back. Horton was released and Spanish diplomats were sent to negotiate with the British and their Creek allies. From June 17th - 22nd, Horton played host at his home on Jekyll Island as the leaders of nations - British, Spanish, and Creek - sought to work out their differences in the colonies. Jon Burpee, as William Horton, will be among those sharing events from 275 years ago at Jekyll Island's Horton House on June 18.
For more information about this exciting peek into colonial life, call or
visit the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road, 912-635-4036.

SAND DOLLARS ARE PRICELESS
Always a favorite find for beachcombers, and beautiful as they are, sand dollars are not gemstones they are the bodies of living creatures. Related to starfish and sea urchins, a "starfish" pattern can be seen on the top of a sand dollar.
And, much like sea urchins, live sand dollars have many small spines on their underside which they use to crawl across the sea floor. There is only one kind of sand dollar found on the Georgia coast - a species known to biologists as Mellita isometra. Our sand dollar is sometimes called a "keyhole sand dollar" or "keyhole urchin" because of the five slits near the edges of the disk.
Baby sand dollars start life small you could call them "sand pennies" and many are eaten by predators,
falls, living sand dollars will bury them-
selves just below the surface of the sand
to escape the killing heat of the sun.
When you see a round outline in the
sand, dig down a little and you'll find
the living sand dollar! Often living dol-
lars are greenish or even pink-purple on
their underside and, if you look closely,
you can see the tiny spine-feet moving.
Help your sand dollar survive by plac-
ing it back in the water afterwards.

GEORGIA SEA TURTLE CENTER
WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN
NESTING BEGINS DURING THE SUMMER NIGHTS AS FEMALE LOGGERHEADS USE THE BEACHES OF JEKYLL ISLAND FOR THEIR FERTILE BIRTHING GROUNDS
There is a great deal of activity that happens on the Jekyll Island beach when the sun goes down. From May to September much of it involves amazing, ancient sea turtles.
Every summer female loggerhead sea turtles come ashore at night, returning to, or near, their natal beaches (where they were born). Once on the beach, the female will dig a nest cavity with her rear flippers and deposit approximately 80 120 eggs.
She will then cover the nest before making her way back to the sea. Please be respectful and quiet if you are fortunate enough to see a nesting sea turtle. Stay at least 25 feet away and do not shine any lights (even turtle-friendly red lights) on the sea turtle. It doesn't take much to distract or disturb the turtle from doing what comes naturally.
Here's where Jekyll Island Authority's Georgia Sea Turtle
Center comes in! Throughout the summer, trained teams monitor nesting behavior on Jekyll Island. When patrollers discover a turtle which is about to prepare her nest, they monitor her safety and collect important research information that will help protect sea turtles. They secure the site and monitor it for about two months until hatchlings emerge to make that important trek to the sea. Although the hatchlings face numerous challenges, the cycle of sea turtle survival remains intact.
Become a part of the action!
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center conducts nightly Turtle Walks and morning Nest Walks throughout the nesting season. Participants join a trained guide for an informative presentation and beach walk. Although no guarantee can be made that a nesting or hatchling event will occur, we can guarantee that your visit will be memorable. It is part of what makes Jekyll such a special place.

ON OR OFF THE SHORE, FISHING IS A GREAT CATCH OF ACTIVITY
As the temperatures rise, so does the chance to catch certain types of fish
Welcome Anglers! There are many fishing opportunities and adventures to be had on, and off, the coast of Jekyll Island. Captain Larry Crews of Jekyll Island Fishing Center and his staff will help fulfill your every fishing fantasy. A professional guide with over 45 years of experience in salt and freshwater fishing,
Captain Larry offers tours for Deep Sea Fishing, Bottom Fishing, Offshore Reef Fishing, Night Shark Fishing and Dolphin Tours too. June is an excellent time to go after the feisty flatfish or whiting, and area waters are abundant with saltwater species such as redfish, sea trout, drum, sheepshead and croaker that can all be caught from the shoreline.
Sharks are also abundant this time of year and are caught all over Jekyll Island's adjacent waterways as well as at the pier. Land-based anglers will enjoy fishing from the Jekyll Island Pier, the Ski Rixen Pond, the beach at St. Andrews Picnic Area, or the entire beachfront of the island.
If you are feeling adventurous, take a ride with Captain Larry on a breath-taking excursion along the southeast coast of Georgia on the OSPO, a sturdy 44-foot US Coast Guard certified fishing vessel. Set out from Jekyll Harbor Marina and cruise down the intercostal waterway along the coasts of historic Jekyll Island, Little Cumberland and
Cumberland Island. Sit back and relax as you pass the Little Cumberland Lighthouse, the wharf, and an Indian-shell mitten, all the while Captain Larry delighting you with tales of long ago.
Cruising along the marshes you will spy wild horses, ospreys, eagles, and other marine life indigenous to the Georgia coast. And, if you are lucky, friends with flippers, Georgia dolphins, will trail along performing tricks to your great amusement.
Schedule a tour to enjoy the spectacular sunsets over the marshlands or a party trip at reasonable rates. If you desire more personalized adventures, Captain Larry has two smaller vessels to book on a half day or full day basis.
Call Captain Larry and his staff of Jekyll Island Fishing Center at 912270-7474 for details or check them out at www.offshore-charters.com. So bait up and cast off! There's no telling what might bite.

STAYING SAFE THIS SUMMER
Immediate Care Centers offer medical services for minor illnesses and injuries.
Summer is here and most families will be heading outdoors. Keeping everyone safe during the summer will ensure their experience is both fun and memorable.
Children are especially vulnerable. One of the best ways to prevent serious injuries is have your child wear the appropriate safety gear when riding on scooters, skateboards, rollerblades and bicycles.
It's also a good idea for all children one year and older to receive swimming lessons. However, lessons should not be considered "drown-proofing." Young children should never be left
unsupervised around water. Every child should be fitted with a personal floatation device (PFD) when on board watercraft. Young children and non-swimmers should also wear a PFD when at waters edge.
Finally, don't forget the sunscreen! Everyone over six months old should use a sunscreen with at least a 15 SPF.
Infants under six months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight.
Do you need urgent care? Visit the Glynn Immediate Care Center, a strategic affiliate of Southeast Georgia Health System, located on 3400 Parkwood Drive, off Glynn Ave. (Highway 17). Their hours are: MondayFriday, 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.;
Saturday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 12-5:30 p.m. They are also open on

GOODYEAR COTTAGE EXHIBIT
The Jekyll Island Arts Association will present the June Exhibit at Goodyear Cottage Gallery featuring artists Shelby Sweat, painter, Jewelene Sweat, photographer, and Elizabeth Hayes Halderson, potter. The exhibit will begin May 31 and will run through June 30, with a reception for the artists on Sunday, June 5, 2011 between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
Shelby and Jewelene Sweat live in southeast Georgia and enjoy their hobbies of painting and photography. Shelby started painting several years ago after seeing an exhibition on wildlife painting. After seeing this breathtaking display he was inspired to paint in earnest and has become an advanced painter. Shelby enters art competitions around the country and exhibits his work in various galleries in Georgia and Florida. In November, he
will exhibit his work at the Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival in Thomasville, Georgia.
Jewelene Sweat began photography when she was given a digital camera as a gift several years ago and, since that time, photography has become such a joy in her life. While she likes black and white, her passion is bringing out the brilliant colors in our environ-
ment. Taking photos reminds her of lyr-
ics in a familiar song, "I see trees of green, red roses too....and I think to myself, what a wonderful world."
Elizabeth Halderson lived most of her life on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. As a child she loved spending the days exploring the marsh, climbing live oaks, seeing wildlife, and fishing.
She remembers so well the stories told to her about the island when she was a child that today they are the inspiration for her art. It pleases Elizabeth to have both her dinnerware and stories passed around the table. Each unique piece is handmade and handpainted with layers of under glaze and clear glaze. Her pottery reminds her of her fondness for Coastal Georgia's wildlife.
Goodyear Cottage Gallery & Shop is located in the Historic District of Jekyll Island and is open every day. The hours of operation are Mon. - Fri. 12 noon to 4 p.m. and Sat. & Sun. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Not only can you enjoy seeing a wonderful exhibit, there are also many items available for purchase in Goodyear's Shop. All merchandise is made by very talented members, most of whom are advanced artists.

BEACH ADVISORY
BEACH ADVISORY
What is a beach swimming advisory? The Georgia Beach Monitoring Program conducts weekly tests at all Georgia beaches that are active with public use. The program relies on weekly water tests to measure bacteria levels at several points along Jekyll Island's beach.
Should a test indicate an elevated level of bacteria, the local Glynn County Health Department will post a "Swimming Advisory." Because ingesting sea water with elevated levels
of bacteria may cause illness, a beach swimming advisory means the Health Department recommends you not swim at the designated beach. However, the beach is open; please feel free to enjoy recreational activities. Swimming, while not recommended, is safe if water is not ingested in large quantities. Small children or people with weak immune systems are at greater risk. Bacteria from the water can also enter the body through open wounds. Fish caught in these waters are just as safe to eat as in any other waters, and should be washed and cooked thoroughly before eating. Consuming raw or undercooked
seafood poses health risks independent of the swimming advisories.
The frequent advisories on Jekyll Island, primarily at St. Andrews picnic area, are related to the natural wildlife activity along the southern portion of the island. Once a beach tests positive for elevated bacteria, an advisory is issued via public notice and a sign at the beach access point is changed to indicate the warning. Monitoring tests are conducted daily and, once tests indicate normal levels, the advisory is removed via public notice and the sign is changed back to normal. Due to the
frequency of these advisories at St. Andrews picnic area the public notices often are not included in local news reports. The Beach Monitoring Program is a cooperative effort of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Resources Division and the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health.

Summer nesting seasons, especially on the Island's south end. Migratory birds are protected by law. Be aware of deer when driving, especially at night. Please do not hand feed any animal. State law prohibits feeding alligators.
Thank you for helping to preserve a way of life on Jekyll Island.
Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency medical response team. Beachgoers - pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.
We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.

REVITALIZATION OF JEKYLL ISLAND
MOSS COTTAGE LANDSCAPE BACK TO ORIGINAL GRANDEUR
The revitalization of Jekyll Island has many different components. It involves the construction and development of new infrastructure as well as the restoration of beloved Jekyll Island landmarks.
Most recently a landscape restoration project is turning back the clock for one of the most well- known aspects of the Jekyll Island Club Historic District, Moss Cottage.
Located along Riverview Drive amid the live oak trees, Moss Cottage was built by the Struthers family in 1896 and is one of 33 historic structures within the Jekyll Island Club Historic District.
With funding assistance from the Jekyll Island Foundation and the Jekyll Island Garden Club, the grounds of Moss Cottage have been restored to its original appearance.
"As the rapid development and completion of the Jekyll Island Authority's revitalization projects continues, it's the goal of the Foundation to motivate guests of the island to also become acquainted with Jekyll's rich history of preservation and conservation through the enhancement of the island's historical assets," stated Mac DeVaughn the Executive Director of the Jekyll Island Foundation.
The Jekyll Island Foundation, a public nonprofit organization which operates exclusively for charitable and educational purposes to support the work of the Jekyll Island Authority by assisting in the preservation, conservation, and appreciation of the island, recently received a $3,000 grant from the Garden Club of Georgia's Historic Grant Committee, to provide funding assistance to the project. The Moss Cottage landscape project was selected to receive funds from the 2011 Historic Landscape and Garden Grant program. Other support for the project includes funding from the Jekyll Island Garden Club.
"We are thrilled to have such tremendous support from the Foundation and Garden Clubs on another Cottage enhancement project," stated John Hunter, Jekyll Island Authority Director of Historic Resources. "It is because of continuous support from these groups and groups like them throughout Georgia, that the Jekyll Island Authority has been able to accomplish eight landscape restoration projects in the Historic District."
Moss Cottage has returned to the way it looked 100 years ago when William and Savannah
Struthers were the owners. Photographic and documentary research assisted in the re-creation of site plans for the century-old landscape. Vegetation planted includes cabbage palms, date palms, kumquat trees, red cedars, yuccas, emerald green boxwood hedges, and annuals.
"Historic landscapes, like historic buildings and structures, are windows into an era's development," stated Cliff Gawron, Jekyll Island Authority's Director of Landscape and Planning.
"It is critical for us as stewards of preservation, to maintain that gateway into Jekyll Island's past."
Other properties located within the Historic District have also been renewed with landscapes in the spirit of their original design.
These rehabilitated landscapes include the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, Crane Cottage, Cherokee, Sans Souci, all the shops along Pier Road, the Island Sweets Shoppe, Villa Ospo, Villa Marianna, Furness Cottage, the power plant (now the Georgia Sea Turtle Center), and the Morgan Center.
