They will also receive a video of their swing, using V1 Video Analysis Software.
Each session will run Monday - Friday from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The cost is $249 per child or $200 per child if multiple children from the same family register. Camps are available June 13 - 17, June 20 - 24, June 27 - July 1, July 11 - 15, July 18 - 22, and July 25 - 29.

Chamber Music Coming to Jekyll Island's mistletoe

The Jekyll Island Authority and the Jekyll Island Arts Association will present concerts by Franklin Pond Quartet the last weekend of July in the historic district's Mistletoe Cottage.
Saturday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m., the Franklin Pond Quartet, which includes members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, will perform Haydn, Dvorak and Beethoven for your listening enjoyment. Sunday, July 31 at 7:00 p.m., the Linda Underwood Student Showcase Concert will include music by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Kodaly and Smetana.
Franklin Pond is a highly praised summer music program for serious young musicians, with a faculty composed of musicians from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

The students, ranging in age from 14 to 17, are serious artists who have undergone a rigorous audi-

tion process to be part of the program. As participants in the six-week summer seminar,
they have the opportunity to receive artistic guidance in master classes from nationally known musicians of the highest caliber from all over the United States.
Originally, chamber music referred to a type of classical music that was performed in a small space such as a house or a palace chamber. And many of the great master composers originally intended their music to be played in these smaller rooms thus making the elegant and historic Mistletoe Cottage the perfect venue for string quartet performances.
Tickets are available at www.jekyllisland.com. Seating is limited.

A Loyalist's Island

How a Jekyll Islander was forced from his home during Independence fight

America declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain on July 4, 1776. However, for John Martin, a Loyalist, American independence brought great loss rather than celebration.
John Martin's family had strong ties to England. His parents were born there and his older brother was an important member of the Royal Council. So, in 1775, when John's father, Clement Martin, Sr., died, John and his sisters, Jane and Ann, inherited Jekyll Island. Jane's husband, Richard Leake, oversaw the estate which remained unsettled because war simmered over words like liberty, freedom, and democracy.
On March 1, 1778, John Martin was judged guilty of high treason "by traitorously adhering to the King of Great Britain." Martin's property was confiscated and he was banished from Georgia forever. If he remained in Georgia, he would be jailed until he could be transported "beyond the seas to some part of the British Kings dominions." If he returned to Georgia, he would "suffer death, without benefit of clergy." The capture of Savannah by Royal Forces in December 1778

stopped this occurrence. However, when the Patriots retook Georgia in 1782 they passed an Act of Confiscation and Banishment, seizing property from 342 Loyalists, including Martin, and banishing them from Georgia.
John Martin fled to east Florida, but in 1783 the Treaty of Paris gave Florida to Spain. Martin could remain in Florida if he swore allegiance to the Spanish King. Unwilling to do so, he moved to The Islands of The Bahamas. There, England offered Loyalists "Considerations" for their war losses, consisting of cash payments, land grants, pensions, and offices.
As Martin sought land elsewhere, his home in Georgia was lost forever. In February of 1784, Richard Leake was settling debts from Clement Martin's estate when Jekyll Island was seized as John Martin's property and sold at public auction. Leake placed the highest bid at auction and bought back the island for 34 pounds 11 shillings. The Leake family kept Jekyll Island 7 years, growing cotton seeds Martin sent from the Bahamas, as the 13 colonies formed a new nation.

gators: Leaving Nature Wild

Coastal visitors indicate that American Alligators, local to the southeastern United States, are top on their list of animals they want to see.
Alligators are reptiles, and therefore cold-blooded, which means they cannot regulate their body temperature and have to bask to warm up. Alligators are most often seen in storm water lagoons such as those on golf courses. Many natural fresh water bodies were destroyed or altered for agriculture so they take advantage of these man-made habitats because they are the most abundant source of remaining fresh water. Alligators can be observed traveling on their way to marshes to feed. These forays are often misconstrued as "dangerous" although it is simply a trip between the grocery store and home.
Alligators are more closely related to birds than to other reptiles and similarly care for their young. This protection has led to another misperception -- female alligators are mean. In actuality, they are just protecting their babies as you would if someone broke into your house where your children sleep. The solution is simple -- don't barge through their front door. Maintaining a distance of at least 60 feet will suffice.
Lastly, and most important, you can safely cohabit with alligators by not feeding them. Feeding alligators is illegal, punishable by law, and a terrible idea. Alligators are like big dogs; if you feed your dog at your dinner table, you can expect a visit every evening. It doesn't mean they are aggressive, it means they learn

you are a source of free fast food. Alligators are inherently shy but prompting them with this unhealthy meal puts them at great risk by reducing their fear of humans and increasing the possibility that they have to be removed from their home and destroyed.
Alligators are a fascinating part of our natural

heritage. Please enjoy them from a distance and do not feed them. Help us to keep Jekyll Island wild and to keep nature natural. It is better for us and these great creatures. -- Kimberly Andrews, PhD, Research Coordinator Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Don't Overheat This Summer
Immediate Care Centers offer medical
services for minor illnesses and injuries.

Heat illness can happen to anyone during the hot summer months. Whether you are spending time on the beach, fishing at Clam Creek pier, or playing golf, knowing the symptoms of heat illness are important.
Heat cramps are painful spasms that occur during physical activity. Stop the activity, drink fluids containing sodium and stretch the affected muscles. Heat exhaustion is the inability to continue activity. Some symptoms are heavy sweating, dehydration, rapid breathing, persistent muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, hyperventilation and nausea. Cool the person and start fluid replacement. The first sign of heat stroke, the final level of heat illness, is often confusion and can be fatal.
If recovery is not rapid, the person should be transferred to an emergency care center.

You can follow these simple steps to prevent heat illness:
Avoid intense exercise during the hottest hours of the day. Wear lightweight, loose clothing. Use sunscreen. Wear a hat. Drink 16 to 20 ounces of fluid hourly. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

beach advisory

Beach Advisory

What is a beach swimming advisory? The Georgia Beach Monitoring Program conducts weekly tests at all Georgia beaches that are active with public use. The program relies on weekly water tests to measure bacteria levels at several points along Jekyll Island's beach.

Should a test indicate an elevated level of bacteria, the local Glynn County Health Department will post a "Swimming Advisory." Because ingesting sea water with elevated levels

of bacteria may cause illness, a beach swimming advisory means the Health Department recommends you not swim at the designated beach. However, the beach is open; please feel free to enjoy recreational activities. Swimming, while not recommended, is safe if water is not ingested in large quantities. Small children or people with weak immune systems are at greater risk. Bacteria from the water can also enter the body through open wounds. Fish caught in these waters are just as safe to eat as in any other waters, and should be washed and cooked thoroughly before eating. Consuming raw or undercooked

seafood poses health risks independent of the swimming advisories.
The frequent advisories on Jekyll Island, primarily at St. Andrews picnic area, are related to the natural wildlife activity along the southern portion of the island. Once a beach tests positive for elevated bacteria, an advisory is issued via public notice and a sign at the beach access point is changed to indicate the warning. Monitoring tests are conducted daily and, once tests indicate normal levels, the advisory is removed via public notice and the sign is changed back to normal. Due to the

frequency of these advisories at St. Andrews picnic area the public notices often are not included in local news reports. The Beach Monitoring Program is a cooperative effort of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Coastal Resources Division and the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health.

Thank you for helping to preserve a way of life on Jekyll Island.

Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency medical response team. Beachgoers - pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.

We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.
