The Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act, signed last month by Gov. Sonny Perdue in a ceremony at Turner Broadcasting System's Turner Studios, will level the playing field with the state's competitors and will benefit commercial production in Georgia, according to the Governor and the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). GDEcD officials say the bill's benefits were formulated to appeal not only to feature film and television producers but to commercial producers as well.

During the 29th Annual Atlanta Film Festival (AFF) produced by IMAGE Film & Video Center, over 150 films and videos from around the world were screened including works produced locally by Georgia filmmakers. The festivities kicked off with the 5th Annual Awards Ceremony & Premiere Party on June 8 which honored filmmakers, actors and supporters of the film industry in the Southeast. Atlantis Amps Up
The Atlantis Music Conference and Festival is scheduled to bring together professionals representing all sectors of the music industry, along with over 300 of music's most promising new artists for four around-the-clock days and nights of performances, panels, parties and keynote addresses. Now in its eighth year, the annual event will run from August 10-13 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Last year Atlantis welcomed more than 300 artists, 3,000 registrants and 42,000 live music enthusiasts representing 32 states and six countries. This year organizers expect more attendees and a broader spectrum of showcasing artists from around the country and overseas. The 2005 Atlantis will spotlight an array of genres including rock, hip-hop, soul, Latin, pop, punk, metal and R&B.
Atlantis features nightly showcases for new talent, 95% of the participants are unsigned artists, performing for music enthusiasts in Atlanta's renowned rock rooms and live music venues. Past showcasing artists include Maroon 5, Los Lonely Boys, John Mayer, Bone Crusher, Lost Prophets, The Lost Trailers, Sugarland, Trapt, The Hiss, Glen Phillips, Kottonmouth Kings, Josh Joplin and Trust Company. Montreux Jazz Festival Returns
The Montreux Jazz Festival returns to Atlanta September 2-4. The festival will feature an array of concerts, lectures, films and workshops in a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces at the Woodruff Arts Center. The festival will also showcase more than 100 local, regional and internationally renowned musicians.
Artists performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Atlanta include Keith Jarrett, Eddie Palmieri, Bill Charlap, Jack DeJohnette and Dick Hyman. Blues legends Buddy Guy, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Nappy Brown, Reverend Billy and Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin will perform during the weekend. Fans of soul, neo-soul, urban grooves and nu-jazz will appreciate the artistry of contemporary British talent Mark de Clive Lowe, Julie Dexter and Soweto Kinch.
Memorabilia from the famed Montreux Jazz Archives will be on display at the Woodruff Campus. This includes footage performances of Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye and other musical legends who have performed at the festival since 1968. Archival photos as well as the original Montreux posters and collectibles from previous festivals will be displayed.

Big Can Be Bad!
Leo Ticheli Productions has received a Silver Telly award for their commercial Big Can Be Bad! The spot was produced with BBDO/Atlanta for Check It Today, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to increase prostate cancer awareness.
BBDO/Atlanta and Laverne Hypolite, executive director of Check It Today, required a power spot that could stand up to other commercials running during the Super Bowl, but their non-profit resources were slim. The goal was to reach men in a humorous way. Double entendres drive the spot. BBDO/Atlanta vice president and director of business development Michael Palma suggested a sports bar setting because the commercial was to run during the Super Bowl.

According to Greg Torre, director of the Georgia Film, Video & Music Office, the tax credits were developed with commercial spot production as a primary target market.
"The legislation supplies a critical element to an already excellent Georgia production package: serious cost savings," said Torre. "Georgia has incredible diversity in terms of scenery and geographic features. Locations that range from the foothills of the Georgia mountains an hour north of Atlanta, to the small historic town squares that dot the state, to the 19th century architecture and cobblestone streets of Savannah on the coast will add texture and production value to any storyboard."
According to Torre, these location resources complement the state's deep crew base, abundant on-camera talent, world-class post production community, state-of-the-art equipment and ease of access through HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport. Since the office's inception in 1973, commercials have and continue to be the cornerstone of media production in Georgia.

The new program offers a base tax credit of nine percent on Georgia expenditures with uplifts based on Georgia job creation, expenditures in less-developed counties and for multiple television projects by a single producer.
The base tax credit will apply to the company's total in-state spend through both residential and non-residential wages and qualified expenditures on materials and services. To encourage the employment of Georgia cast and crew, companies will receive an uplift of three percent resulting in a tax credit equal to 12% for in-state hires. To encourage filming in unique locations throughout the state, companies will receive an additional three percent credit for qualified expenditures in regional counties outside of metro Atlanta. If a production company invests more than $20 million in the state in multiple television projects in a single year, it will be entitled to an additional two percent credit, resulting in a base investment credit of 11% percent.

Companies must spend a minimum of $500,000 in the state to qualify for the credit. Production companies who have limited or no Georgia tax liability will be permitted to sell their tax credits to Georgia taxpayers.
The new act supplements a sales tax exemption for film, video and commercial producers that has been in effect since 2002. Torre noted that the state continues to develop and grow the commercial industry through familiarization tours tailored for commercial producers and by encouraging locally headquartered companies to utilize Georgia resources, infrastructure and locations in their spot production.
In 2004, 182 commercials were produced in Georgia for a total combined budget of $24.6 million over 359 shooting days. The business has experienced steady growth during the film office's 30-plus years of existence according to Torre, who estimates the rate of growth is approximately five to 10% a year.

Two Tellys for AIB
Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters, Inc. (AIB) received a 2005 Bronze Telly Award for its original program A Woman's Place. The award-winning episode featured Soyara Mire, a survivor of female genital mutilation, and clips from Fire Eyes, her award-winning documentary on this heart-wrenching subject matter.
The AIB program Tikun Olam To Repair The World has also been honored with a Bronze Telly Award. The Anne Frank In The World segment for which the Telly was awarded, was shot on location at Kennesaw State Center, presented by the Georgia Commission On The Holocaust. Jan Epstein, host Tikun Olam and exhibit coordinator Michael Weinroth, toured the exhibit as AIB's Jason Wilson shot the footage. Weinroth provided the narrative as the filming took place inside the exhibit. The segment features the chair of the Georgia State Commission on the Holocaust Michael Altman and executive director/chair emeritus Sylvia Wygoda.
Founded in 1978, The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable television commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions. The Telly Awards receive over 10,000 entries annually from around the world.

Chris Robinson is making his feature film directorial debut. The nine-week shoot began on July 11 at various locations all over Atlanta.

Billboard Convenes in Atlanta
Billboard's Annual R&B Hip-Hop Conference & Award Show will be held August 3-5 in its new location Atlanta, Georgia. Now in its sixth year, the conference will feature cutting-edge speakers, informative panels, interactive workshops, networking opportunities and talent showcases capped by the annual R & B/Hip-Hop Awards Show.

Georgia TeVe Premieres

On July 1 Georgia TeVe, the state's first locally-produced Hispanic cable channel, began producing and broadcasting television programming targeting the Hispanic market in Georgia. The creator and CEO of the station is Rafael Ortiz-Guzmn. Georgia TeVe's mission is to improve the quality of life in Georgia's Hispanic community through Spanish-language television programming focused on information, education and entertainment. Georgia TeVe will produce more than 12 original shows in Spanish. The original productions include: La Santa Misa Catlica, a Catholic mass in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Atlanta; Las recetas de mama, a cooking show co-hosted by chefs Cristian Adasme of Chile and Nagib Sued of Puerto Rico who are professors at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and Mujer Latina, a women's show hosted by Colombian Carolina Melo. The channel will also produce Esto s es msica, a top Latino Billboard hosted by Ecuadorian journalist Martha Sandoval; La hora de la aventura, a children's show hosted by Brazilian Joana Madruga; Mejorando tu casa sin miedo, a home improvement show hosted by Mexican Fito Villaseor; Leyes Cotidianas, a law advice show hosted by Peruvian lawyer Ralph Perales; Finanzas Cotidianas, a financial advice show hosted by Puerto Rican CPA Grace Williams; Georgia TeVe Deportes sports coverage hosted by the Argentinean Willi Martnez; La gente opina, an opinion show and Hispanic Heritage Minute, an exclusive property of Georgia TeVe that showcases great Hispanic personalities in history. In addition to its original productions, the station will also showcase novelas (soap operas) and air a children's lineup, as well as sports programming. For those who love Mexican movie classics and music, Georgia TeVe will showcase Pelculas and Puras Norteas. Georgia TeVe will be broadcasted 24 hours a day through Comcast's Channel 150.

Guillotine's Story of Movies
Turner Classic Movies (TMC) and director Charlie Coates have returned to Guillotine Post and collaborated with senior editor Michael Koepenick to design an upbeat interstitial to create awareness of the new school program called The Story of Movies. This first-of-its-kind initiative will provide a comprehensive film study curriculum offered at no charge to middle schools nationwide.
The interstitial features Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese explaining how the use of photography, music, dialogue and even the opening credits can create a powerful experience for the viewer. TCM and IBM have teamed up with The Film Foundation in support of The Story of Movies and will be broadcasting the interstitial beginning in August of 2005.
Guillotine Post has also been working with Cartoon Network producer Karen Hutchison to create a series of fun spots and promos for Adult Swim, the network's late-night programming for adults. Editors Christo Harris and Michael Koepenick have been tag-teaming spots for Nintendo, Burger King and the movie XXX-State of the Union.
My South Competition

Turner South has partnered with Comcast Atlanta to launch "My South Speaks." This program provides teachers with curriculum and a scholarship contest for students at the middle, junior and high school levels in metropolitan Atlanta.
Students were asked to communicate what the South means to them in their own words by submitting essays that begin with the phrase "My South is ..." and concludes with the sentence "My name is ___, and this is my South." The ten finalists chosen at each grade level performed their entries in front of a live audience in April at Oglethorpe University. Students will also have the opportunity for their work to appear as part of Turner South's image campaign. The first, second and third-place winners and their schools will receive scholarship rewards of $500, $300 and $200 respectively. Turner South will also provide teachers with an educational curriculum CD that includes lesson plans and materials encouraging creative writing and articulation of what the South means to them. Busy Spring At Doppler
Seen at Doppler this spring was Atlanta resident Jane Fonda in the studio for several looping sessions for New Line Productions and her recently released Monster In Law. The sessions were engineered by Fay Salvaras and John St. Denis. OutKast's Andre Benjamin was at Doppler doing ADR for Revolver Man with engineer Shawn Coleman. Benjamin was directed by Guy Ritchie via ISDN with London's DeLane Lea Studios. Engineer Granger Beem worked with actors Donny Nelson and Jill Jane Clements on an ADR session for LIFT Production's Elvis: The Miniseries. Salvaras also recorded ADR for the upcoming feature Backwater with Deborah Duke and for the TV-movie Locusts with Greg Alan Williams.
Composer Eddie Horst was in Studio E with Beem recording and mixing a large music package for Cartoon Network's Fridays programming block. Full bands, string sections and horn sections sat in for various pieces over several sessions. Beem was assisted by Mac Atkisson. Cartoon Network's On-Air Promotions department also came to Doppler for sound design on several promo packages for the debuts of two new shows, The Life and Times of Juniper Lee and Camp Lazlo produced by Larry Miller with engineer Salvaras. Salvaras and Coleman also engineered a Summer Preview Special campaign for the Fridays block with producer Steve Patrick. The network's Adult Swim department has been recording voices for a new show 12-Ounce Mouse with producer Matt Maiellaro.
On the advertising side several campaign debuts originated at Doppler including jingle packages for Moe's Southwest Grill with Blue Sky Agency producer Mike Schatz, the ad launch for Ted's Montana Grill with Scharbo & Co and producer Sarah Cotton, and Georgia Force arena football team with Kilgannon McReynolds and producers Chris Schlegel and Terry Doyle.

At the 6th annual "Perfect Pitch" held during the 2005 Atlanta Film Festival screenwriters competed for a chance to pitch their scripts to Hollywood in a competition sponsored by the Georgia Film, Music & Video Office. The final winner of the "Perfect Pitch" competition will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles in December to pitch his or her project to Los Angelesbased industry representatives and participate in the film office's annual "Georgia Night in L. A." This networking event provides an opportunity for representatives of Georgia's film industry to mingle with entertainment industry decisionmakers, past and prospective producers of Georgia lensed projects and Georgia-affiliated residents and businesses located in L.A.

The 10 semi-finalists were selected based on one-page synopses of their scripts. Each had three minutes to pitch their work to a panel of film producers. The judges based their decisions solely on the contestants' verbal pitches. The 2005 Perfect Pitch Finalists and their scripts are: Coo by Phill Maury, Little White Lies by David Littleton and Jen by Stephen Hart and Michael Friedman.
