On August 2, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue presented the members of the newly established Georgia Film, Video & Music Advisory Commission at a swearing in ceremony held at the state Capitol. Composed of 19 members, this group of business professionals will provide the Georgia Film, Video & Music Office with advice and resource access focused on growing Georgia's entertainment industry.
The newly appointed members of the advisory commission are: Mike Akins, Dallas Austin, Kay Beck, PhD., Dana F. Braun, Ron Charles, PhD., Dan Darling, Melissa Goodman, Bart L. Graham, Michael T. Gravley, II, Shay Bentley-Griffin, Patrick Jones, Joel Katz, Chris Klaus, Diane Lewis, PhD., Representative Butch Parrish, Senator Mitch Seabaugh, Ed Spivia, Paula Wallace and Harriette Watkins. Ed Spivia will serve as the advisory commission chairman.
A New Day For Georgia

The first of July was a banner day for the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade & Tourism (GDITT), of which the Georgia Film, Video & Music Office is a division. On that day GDITT, the state's lead sales and marketing arm, charged with recruiting the entertainment industry, businesses, trade partners and tourists to Georgia became the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). The department moved to the Centergy Building located in the Technology Square complex at Spring and Fifth Street in Midtown Atlanta.
Department commissioner Glenn Cornell had previously announced that he would retire on June 30, 2004. So on the first day of July, Governor Sonny Perdue's newly appointed GDEcD Commissioner Craig Lesser took the

Foxworthy's Georgia-Lensed Blue Collar TV Debuts
Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy are the three stars of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, one of the most successful comedy tours of all time. It inspired Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie, which was the highest-rated movie ever to air on Comedy Central and has sold more than one million DVDs to date. This summer Jeff, Bill and Larry along with an ensemble cast bring their humor to The WB's Blue Collar TV. The series shot the first round of shows at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta.

FEATURED LOCATION: Hawkinsville
Located on the banks of the Ocmulgee River in central Georgia, Hawkinsville is the county seat of Pulaski County. Pulaski County was originally the capital of the Creek Indian Confederacy.
Just southwest of Macon, Hawkinsville boasts a number of historical buildings and a variety of scenic locations. From its Old Opera House where Oliver Hardy, (part of the comedy duo of Laurel and Hardy), once sang on stage in a quartet during his stay with an aunt in Hawkinsville, to its 1874 neoclassical revival courthouse, Pulaski County's rich heritage has been carefully preserved by residents and the Pulaski Historical Commission.
Hawkinsville is also known as the "Harness Horse Capital of Georgia." The city has been the winter home for harness horse training since the early 1920's, serving horsemen from northern and midwestern states.

Craig Lesser, 53, was formerly a partner in the firm of Griswold Lesser, LLC which provides strategic advice and counsel on public affairs issues. He has worked as a corporate governmental affairs and communications strategist for 20 years. Commissioner Lesser was senior vice president for external affairs for Mirant Americas, Inc., a spin off from Southern Company where he represented the company at the local, state, regional and national levels. He was also president and CEO of the company's subsidiary in New York.
Commissioner Lesser began his career at Georgia Power, another Southern Company subsidiary, in the corporate communications department and eventually represented the company in Washington for five years as an environmental, tax and general business issues lobbyist. He then served seven years as vice president of governmental and regulatory affairs for the utility, directing its efforts at the Georgia Legislature, the Public Service Commission, and the U.S. Congress. Additional responsibilities included community development, urban affairs, agricultural affairs and the company's initiatives in public and private education.
The Commissioner earned his bachelor's degree in speech and theatre from State University of New York College at Oneonta and graduated from the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University Graduate School of Business. He has served as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and serves on the board of the Regional Leadership Forum and the Tech High Foundation, a newly approved charter high school in midtown Atlanta. Commissioner Lesser is on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. He has also been chairman of the board of Georgia Special Olympics and a trustee of the Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges and of the Georgia 4-H Foundation.
GDEcD operates under the direction of a 21-member board of directors chaired by Phil Jacobs. President of Georgia Operations for BellSouth Corporation, Jacobs has also been Chief Operating Officer of Optus Communications. He currently serves on the boards for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Corporation for Economic Development and Georgia Center for Advanced Telecommunications Technology. Chairman Jacobs was a member of the Governor's Education Reform Study Commission in 1999 and 2000.

Georgia-Based Gospel Music Channel to Debut
The Gospel Music Channel, the first 24-hour television network dedicated to all forms of gospel music entertainment will make its network debut in October 2004. Charles Humbard, former senior vice president and general manager of Discovery Networks and Brad Siegel, former president of Turner Entertainment Networks, have teamed to launch the network. Humbard will serve as president and chief executive officer while Siegel will serve as vice chairman. The Gospel Music Channel will be headquartered in Atlanta.
The Gospel Music Channel's primary target audience will be adults 18-49, it will feature music video blocks, artists' biographies, music specials and live concert programming that will also appeal to the large and diverse national audience. The schedule will be strategically day-parted to reach teens, tweens and even children.
Gospel music is one of the fastest-growing areas in the recorded music industry. Total record sales for 2003 reached 50 million units in the United States, with 62% growth rate between 1996 and 2001 with over 60% of these sales taking place in mainstream retail outlets. In addition more than 1,400 radio stations throughout the country program gospel music for over 80 million listeners.

The Unseen in Post at Lab 601

The dramatic feature film, The Unseen, was shot this summer in Haralson and Atlanta Georgia. The film was written, directed and produced by Lisa France. In The Unseen an emotionally isolated black man, Roy (Steve Harris) returns to his rural Georgia hometown where he is forced to confront his former best friend, Harold (Gale Harold) and a horrific secret only the two of them share. Through helping Harold's blind, socially inept brother, Sammy (Phillip Bloch), Roy is able to confront his childhood demons, and complete the past that has always haunted him. The Unseen features an ensemble cast that includes Steve Harris (The Practice), Gale Harold (Life on the Ledge, Queer As Folk), Phillip Bloch (Death of a Dynasty), Catherine Dent (21 Grams, The Shield), Michelle Clunie (Queer As Folk, The Usual Suspects), Judah Friedlander (Along Came Polly, American Splendor) and Shirley Caesar (Fighting Temptations). The Unseen was executive produced by Duane Wandless, with producers Luis Moro and Demian Lichtenstein. Co-producers of The Unseen are Belinda Marment, Chris Mills, Brian Newman, Melissa Palmer and Cynthia Perez Brown, with cinematography by Jim Hunter. The film is currently in post production at Lab 601.
Diary Shoots in Atlanta
Lions Gate Film's comedic feature The Diary of a Mad Black Woman is currently in production in Atlanta. The Diary of a Mad Black Woman is an adaptation by writer Tyler Perry of his play of the same name, with Perry playing a lead role in the film.
The Diary of a Mad Black Woman focuses on Helen, a devoted and loving wife who on the eve of her 20th wedding anniversary discovers that her husband Charles wants a divorce so that he can be with Helen's best friend.
The Diary of a Mad Black Woman stars Kimberly Elise (Manchurian Candidate), Steve Harris (The Practice), Shemar Moore (The Brothers), Tamara Taylor (Introducing Dorothy Dandridge), Tyler Perry and Cicely Tyson. The film is directed by Darren Grant, produced by Ruben Cannon and co-produced by Mike Upton with David Claessen as DP.
Georgia Music Hall of Fame
The 26th Annual Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards will be held on Saturday, September 18th at the Georgia World Congress Center. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Georgia Music Festival, Inc., a non-profit organization that honors the many achievements of Georgia musicians, songwriters, composers, conductors, publishers and agents.
Each year Friends of Georgia Music nominate, elect and induct into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame individuals who have made significant contributions to Georgia's musical This year's event will honor the Georgia Music Hall of Fame's newest inductees: Chuck Leavell, Mattiwilda Dobbs, Mary Lou Williams and Hugh Jarrett.

Avid editor Michael Matassa is now repped exclusively in the Southeast by R!OT Atlanta. R!OT Atlanta is a post production studio located in Buckhead that has grown steadily over its 18 years in business offering creative editorial, design, animation, finishing, compositing, sound design and original music. Get A Grip
Mark Henderson of Get-AGrip Atlanta just finished shooting the Burt Reynolds/Rachel Welch movie, Forget About It. Henderson was third unit director of photography and Steadicam. Preproduction was in Georgia and shooting was on location in Arizona. Get-A-Grip Atlanta also just finished shooting Joe Namath's Arthritis Huddle, providing three cameras and the camera crew. Henderson served as first unit director of photography.

Artifact's New Cutting Edge

Artifact Design, a motion design boutique that specializes in new design for broadcast, has signed award-winning designer Ken Edge as a senior designer. The announcement was made by Ken Virgins, owner and creative director of Artifact Design.
Edge was previously a designer with the CNN International television network. During his three-year tenure at CNN, he won three BDA (Broadcast Design Association) design awards for his work in package design, title sequences and bumpers for the network. Edge recently completed his first motion design project with Artifact for Mountain View Productions, designing and animating a graphics package for the Coca-Cola Company that will be used worldwide. He is also leading Artifact's design team in creating 2D and 3D elements for a feature-length documentary directed by Art Spigel of Los Angeles-based production company 7ate9. Mountain View Group, Ltd., a corporate communications company, was recently awarded two Gold "Camera" awards at the US International Film and Video Festival. The company also received two Gold awards at the Questar Awards, the international festival for excellence in video communications. Both Questar Gold award winners went on to win prestigious Grand Awards. At the U.S. International Film and Video Festival, We Are GE Healthcare, a video produced by Mountain View Group, garnered a Gold "Camera" award. The GE video was designed to articulate to employees the vision of the company, demonstrate the global nature of the business, and focus on the innovative solutions that GE Healthcare provides. Another big winner of a Gold "Camera" award was Heidelberg's Connect/Create video, also produced by Mountain View Group in partnership with MS&L, Heidelberg's public relations company. The We Are GE Healthcare video was touted again at the Questar Awards, winning a Gold award, the highest in its category. The Home Depot's Building a Dream video, produced by Mountain View Group, also received a Gold award. Both these Gold awards went on to be judged and selected to an elite group of 10, called the Grand Awards. This year's festival received more than 1,500 entries from 27 countries. Stars Shine at Tree
Sir Elton John recently completed his first self-produced full-length album at Atlanta's Tree Sound Studios. The album titled "Peachtree Road" is scheduled for release in early November.
Throughout the project, lyricist Bernie Taupin, John and the band created their unique sound in Studio A. Elton John band members included Davey Johnson on guitars, Nigel Olsson on drums, keys by Guy Babylon, percussion by John Mahon and Bob Birch on the bass. The sessions were engineered by GRAMMY award winning engineer Matt Still who was assisted by Tree Sound Studios' John Holmes.
Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti came into Studio A to begin tracking his new solo record with producer Ben Grosse (Sevendust, Red Hot Chili Peppers). The album features familiar faces including Scott Phillips on drums and Brian Marshall on bass. Ben Gross also handled the engineering duties with ProTools guru Michael "Bumpy" Tuller running the rig. Session assistance was provided by Zack Odom.
Atlanta's own Collective Soul has returned to Tree to mix some new tracks. Engineer (and Tree alumni) Shawn Gove (Matchbox 20, Sevendust, OutKast) was at the desk in Studio A with the assistance of Josh Monroy. No word yet on release dates.
Former LA based guitarist Craig Poole has returned to Atlanta and Tree Sound Studios. While in Los Angeles Poole had been doing guitar tech duties for Puddle Of Mud and Matchbox 20. You Want To Go Home," "(I Never
Promised You A) Rose Garden" and
"Traces."
In addition to being a music
producer, Lowery opened the famed
Atlanta studio, Southern Tracks
Recording. His Lowery Group office
is lined with his legacy of gold and
platinum records and numerous
awards of a career that spanned 52
years and 7,000 songs. In 1977 Lowery
established a scholarship fund at the
Georgia State University School of
Music. He was also instrumental in the
building of the Georgia Music Hall of
Fame in Macon and continued to be
involved with the annual induction.
Lowery died in Atlanta after a four-
month battle with cancer. He was 79.

the Screen Actors Guild (1988-1990).

blinded by glaucoma as a child, yet
overcame great physical and emotional
trials through his gift for music.
He fused the musical influences of
country, blues, jazz, gospel and swing
to create the soulful sound for which
he is known.
During a career that spanned over
five decades Charles worked with
musicians that included Stevie Wonder,
Willie Nelson and Eric Clapton. Some
of his memorable hits include "What'd
I Say" featuring the Raelettes, "Hit
the Road Jack," "Let the Good Times
Roll" and Georgia's official state song
"Georgia on My Mind."
In addition to playing the
saxophone and piano, Charles was
an extremely talented scorer and
instrumentalist. He won 12 GRAMMY
awards and in 1986 was inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Elevation Creates Cool Graphics

Red Sky Productions teamed up with Elevation to create graphics for Peregrine's Antarctic tour promotional video. Broadcast designer Dianne Frisbee created the graphics, taking inspiration from Antarctica's massive icebergs and crystal blue water.
CNN recently chose Elevation to travel through the past and create a graphics package for This Week in History. Creative director Stephen Cocks designed and finished the heavily animated package incorporating iconic 3D images of everything from Roman statues to the space shuttle. Elevation composer John Lambert created the original score with sound design to augment the timeline theme.

Piedmont Park Blooms On Silver Screen

Local businesses and celebrities joined forces for Piedmont Park Conservancy's first ever film endeavor. Local ABC news anchor Monica Kaufman, anchorwoman Robin Meade of CNN, GRAMMY Award nominee Shawn Mullins and club-icon Blondie of the Clermont Lounge were featured in the two-minute film. The film's purpose is to raise support and awareness of Piedmont Park Conservancy, the non-profit group that is responsible for the restoration and preservation of the park. You can catch a screening prior to each "Screen on the Green" outdoor movie in the park.
National award-winning director Jon Hill, known for his hip and quirky comedic work and edgy shooting style, directed the film while WestWayne, Inc., the largest independent advertising agency in the Southeast and top-rated agency in Atlanta rated by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, created the video pro-bono. Filming was completed during a 14-hour marathon day. The film is a sing-along led by Tinky, an animated squirrel, who encourages viewers to sing park-centric lyrics written to the tune of "Blister in the Sun," a popular 1980s song donated by the Violent Femmes. A variety of people including skaters, dog walkers, bike riders, kids and kite-flyers sing along with Tinky. Organic farmers and supporting businesses participating in the new Green Market effort, impromptu drum circle players and other colorful personalities are all part of the fun. Local celebrities featured in the film include Atlanta Falcons mascot Freddie Falcon, several young actors from Actor's Express along with local companies Crawford Post Production, PC&E, Acoustech, Cinema Concepts, CineFilm, Dagnabit! Animations, the creator of Tinky and George Lowe, the voice of Tinky.

AFF Wraps 10 Film-Filled Days

The 28th Annual Atlanta Film Festival produced by IMAGE Film & Video Center screened over 170 films and videos from around the world, including 25 Georgia works and presented 11 awards to filmmakers at the festival's award ceremony. During the ten-day festival a record 75 visiting artists came from as far away as Cameroon, Africa to enjoy the festivities with over 26,000 attendees. The 2004 festivities kicked off with the 4th annual Awards Gala on June 8th at the Fox Theatre honoring filmmakers, actors and supporters of the film industry in the Southeast.
