Doing the Sundance
As part of Georgia's continued marketing efforts, Georgia Film, Video & Music Office assistant director Carri Gibbs recently represented the state at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival held in Park City, Utah. The festival, which ran from January 16 through January 26, provides a forum for independently produced feature films, documentaries and film shorts from around the world.
This year, the film office represented Georgia at a festival-sponsored Filmmaker's Breakfast, which provided attendees with the opportunity to meet and establish relationships with emerging independent producers and directors attending the festival.
In addition to the breakfast, there were opportunities to meet filmmakers at post-screening receptions, seminars and panel discussions. Discussion topics included the examination of emerging digital cinema and its eventual effects on feature film and independent film distribution.
Since its inception in 1981, the Sundance Film Festival has become the predominant American showcase for independently produced films. Premieres in the Dramatic Competition at the 2003 film festival included Catherine Hardwicke's thirteen, Peter Hedges' Pieces of April and Wayne Kramer's The Cooler starring William Macy. Also notable this year was Salma Hayek's directorial debut The Maldonado Miracle which starred Peter Fonda and Mare Winningham.
Giant Helps Bring Gollum to Life
Photo: Gollum
Giant Studios recently completed motion capture work on New Line Cinema's feature film, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Weta Digital, the New Zealand studio where much of the special effects work for The Lord of the Rings trilogy was created, named Giant Studios as the exclusive motion capture resource for all three films. Among the characters and creatures Giant Studios' proprietary motion capture technology helped bring to life were: Gollum, Ents, hordes of battle hardened Urukhai orcs and the residents of Edoras in their flight to the fortress at Helm's Deep. "It was important that Gollum be as real as the other characters," said Remington Scott, motion capture supervisor for Weta Ltd. "He had to be real emotionally, psychologically and physically because Frodo is supposed to see himself reflected in Gollum. Motion capture is the only way to do that."

Fizz City Remains Hot
Fizz City Films' directors created an impressive landscape of work during the fall that ranged from fashion to politics. Rich's returned to Fizz for another spot package lensed by Joe Piccirilo. Shot at the PC&E stages, the commercials were produced with the help of production manager Polly McKinney, gaffer Beau Williams and key grip Scott Trimble. Comedy director Bo Duke answered the call when Fitzgerald & Company tapped Fizz City to produce an image campaign for the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau featuring appearances by recent Nobel Prize winner President Jimmy Carter and recording artists Collective Soul. Fizz's own executive producer and Hollywood alumni Mark Simon joined the fun and photographed the spots. Simon and the Fitzgerald & Company team also recently completed a Gulf Power spot.
Last fall Fizz City Films found itself at the heart of several nationally monitored political campaigns. Veteran political consultant Tom Perdue and media guru Leyland Gregory enlisted director Michael Pietrobon to shoot high profile, image spots for candidates in North Carolina and Georgia including Saxby Chambliss. Pietrobon and the Fizz team filmed myriad scenes throughout Georgia with Senator-Elect Chambliss and others including President George W. Bush. The commercials received the attention of Washington insiders and were cited by several national analysts for their impact on the successful Chambliss senatorial campaign.
Pietrobon also recently completed a documentary for The Weather Channel, a comedy pilot for Turner South and promotional programs for The Atlanta Beat women's soccer team. Also on the home front, cabin fever will be a lot more tolerable this winter at Fizz City Films as executive producer Simon reports the company is anxiously awaiting the spring completion of its new digs at the Puritan Mill on Lowery Street. The new facility will house Fizz directors, producers and editorial staff.

WIF/A Partners with Film Office
Women in Film and Television International members gathered from around the world at Montego Bay Jamaica in late October for a biennial summit. Delegates from the U.S., Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica and South Africa came to exchange ideas and information and engage in meaningful networking activities.
Through a sponsorship by the Georgia Film, Video & Music Office, Women in Film/Atlanta assembled the panel "A Case Study in Diversity" moderated by WIF/A president Adair Simon. Panelists included casting director Shay Griffin, actress Carol Mitchell Leon and producer/ director/editor Althea Brown. The discussion centered on the reputation Atlanta and the state of Georgia have in promoting and hiring people of color. Noted for its varied landscape, Georgia's southern heritage has helped Atlanta become a real-life "success story" as it relates to the issue of diversity...a "success" that has resulted from a number of influences, all working together.
Panel member Griffin, who has cast over 200 film and television projects explained, "Our African-American talent pool is unsurpassed. It's what makes producers want to come to Georgia to film. We work hard to give our actors a reason to stay here rather than migrating to L.A. or New York."
Music video producer Brown, credits Atlanta-based LaFace Records (founded by L.A. Reid and Babyface) with birthing the current hip-hop music craze and helping Atlanta to become a world-renowned music center. Mitchell-Leon, a respected educator, actress and theatre director, explained the importance education has played in the growth of the African-American community.
