BBDO and R!OT Atlanta Launch Theatrical Ad for Cingular
BBDO Atlanta and R!OT Atlanta (also known as Todd-AO Atlanta) have once again teamed up for Cingular. This time they have created a cell phone ejector seat ad directed to theatergoers who don't silence their cell phones. The theatrical ad from art director Lee Dayvault and writer Matt Ledoux from BBDO is currently in circulation in Loew's, Star Cinemas and Magic Johnson Theatres nationwide.
Produced for the agency by Kathy Adkins and Jennifer Bertoni, the spot was directed by Tom Schiller of Coppos Film. Visual effects supervision on set was provided by R!OT's Jeff Doud. Schiller and Doud evaluated the visual result that would be achieved with a trapeze system that would hurl an actor at the movie screen. The desire was to create the effect completely in-camera and simply remove the rigging. The actor was launched at the screen 26 times (into padding mounted to the white screen). Doud and Schiller evaluated each series of takes and determined that the optimal speed of flight was twice actual speed. Background plates and reference shots were completed and the actor was sent home, still smiling and in one piece.
R!OT Atlanta executive producer Mike Tremble coordinated all the technical details for film scanning and re-output to film for the various theaters' specifications. Producer Laraine Stewart managed the production through R!OT's Atlanta studio. Editor Carlton Eden selected the key take and edited in the speed adjustments to get the trajectory of the stunt man perfect. Flame artist Gavin Holmes pulled together all the elements at film resolution and also undertook the task of painting out of the scene all rigging that flew the stunt man through the air. Audio engineer Chris Basta provided some sound design and VO before the final audio was mixed.

Atlanta-Based Production Team Delivers 1-2 Punch
Greg Phillips, a former CNN senior producer and Neal Broffman, a former CNN senior cameraman have launched digitalvideovisionsTM. Together, they bring 25 years of domestic and overseas production experience to the southeastern U.S. market.
"We're hoping to fill a niche," said Phillips. "We'll do everything for the client, from start to finish. We'll help develop an idea, produce it, shoot it, write it and edit it. And since we'll be working in the digital format, the product will be cutting-edge: broadcast quality, no generation loss, computer-compatible-perfect for websites, DVDs and CD-ROMs." Phillips spent his entire CNN career based in Atlanta but much of the time he wasn't actually in Georgia. "I worked on a weekly, half-hour documentary-style travel program and have shot with camera crews on every continent."
While based in London, Rome and Moscow Broffman shot and edited stories about major world events, from the breakup of the USSR to the Gulf War to the UN intervention in Somalia. Phillips and Broffman anticipate their digitalvideovisionsTM projects to be diverse. "We're expecting to produce and shoot documentaries, short- and long-form news stories and corporate projects," Broffman said. Broffman will shoot on a Sony DSR-370 DV camera and edit on an Apple G4 computer. "One aspect I like best about our business is that clients will be able to view their projects via e-mail or CD," Broffman continued. "So it doesn't matter if you live in Los Angeles, Paris or Augusta--we'll deliver what you need."

A new 30-second spot for C&M Apparel, retailer for top New York City fashion designer Barry Bricken, was lensed in studio and location settings in Atlanta during October by writer-producer Anne Ostrenko and director-DP Dennis Bassarab. A Haunting Petunia Debuts
Photo: Kenny Alfonso sings "The Sofa Song."
Writer/director John Levy and producer Linda Burns' comedic satire Petunia debuted at the Austin Film Festival in October. This longawaited 38-minute movie reinvents the traditional musical and presents an offbeat commentary on the value of family and the relationships we allow to deteriorate. Ted Manson (Runaway Jury, Sweet Home Alabama) stars as The Old Man. After celebrating the sudden death of his nagging wife Petunia, played by Suzi Bass (Fried Green Tomatoes, My Cousin Vinny), The Old Man is rudely awakened when she comes back to haunt him as a houseplant. Randall Sims (Finding Jack Kerouac) portrays The Old Man's Son and Kenny Alfonso (Analyze This, No Pills in Happyland) is the suave police detective who uncovers the truth. Bob Clark, director of photography shot Petunia in High Definition with the Sony 24P camera. Lab 601 provided post-production using their High Definition suite. The music and lyrics, also written by John Levy, include an eclectic assortment of styles from Atlanta's top studio rock musicians to members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Petunia, produced by Garage Musicals and Red Fish Films in association with Lab 601 will be touring the film festival circuit as well as some privately held screenings in Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles.

Giant Studios Captures Fancy Footwork for Adidas
Giant Studios did a little fancy footwork for the latest Digital Domain Adidas spot entitled Mechanical Legs directed by David Fincher for the agency Chiat/Day/ TBWA San Francisco.
The spot opens in a dimly lit factory where a group of mechanical legs are suspended from a steel conveyor rig. Suddenly a pair of the mechanical legs, wearing Adidas a3 Cushion basketball shoes move. They begin to shuffle, jump and run with blinding speed and dexterity across sections of floor paneling that magically appear in their path. Another pair of mechanical legs without shoes comes to life and jumps to the challenge. Both collide in mid-air where the challenger is knocked flat. The Adidas clad mechanical legs continues with its fancy footwork as the screen fades to black.
To capture the "life-like...creepy" motions, Giant's proprietary motion capture technology and editing software were utilized for the performance of the athletes and dancers cast by Digital Domain. Giant's engineers calibrated the system to pickup the deformations of the performer's shoes and used their Charmapper software to create the motion for the 3D mechanical legs from the human performance. Prior to the shoot, 3D assets were delivered for integration into Giant's proprietary real-time pipeline. This allowed Fincher, Digital Domain and the agency to see the motion on their 3D model concurrent with the performance.
The spot is airing nationally and can be viewed online at www.adidas.com/campaigns/ a3/content/frame.asp? file=language.asp

Fourteen radio spots were produced, three of which starred the most recognizable female soccer athlete in the world, Mia Hamm. The exciting spots were produced in one day, distributed electronically via e-mail and Creative Digital Group's FTP site for air the same evening on local Atlanta radio stations. All work was completed at Creative Digital Group's production facility in midtown Atlanta.
7ate9 Promotes Disney's A-Z
The alphabet and 26 animals... these were the ingredients 7ate9 had to work with to create a series of six promotional spots for Playhouse Disney's A-Z campaign. The campaign features the lovable Stanley, the star of his self-titled animated series about an imaginative boy who is wild about animals.
The spots were created as a part of a promotional sweepstakes for Disney who will be showing 26 episodes of Stanley, each corresponding to a letter in the alphabet. Each letter and episode is represented by an animal and a chance for parents to win money towards their child's education.
Using animation of Stanley and various animals from the show along with original 3-D graphics and CGI background environments, 7ate9 created spots that will be aired nationally on Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney and Toon Disney.
