This summer, the southeastern premiere of HBO's Band of Brothers took place in Toccoa, Georgia. HBO, in partnership with the Stephens County Historical Society and the USO, presented the regional premiere of the World War II mini-series executive produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.
Band of Brothers is based on the book by Stephen Ambrose. The 10 episode mini-series traces the lives of the members of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army, who trained at Camp Toccoa in the summer of 1942. The elite paratroopers known as "Easy Company" parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and later captured Hitler's "Eagle's Nest."
Participating in the premiere were Georgia Governor Roy E. Barnes, U.S. Senator Max Cleland, Georgia State House of Representatives Jeanette Jamison, Mary Lou Austin, president, USO of Georgia, Inc., Anne Thomopoulos, senior vice president HBO original programming and mini series co-producer Ivan Schwarz. Easy Company veterans and actors who portrayed them in the series attended the event. The Georgia Film & Videotape Office assisted with research on the project and in the coordination of the screening.
Drum Line to Film in Georgia
The Fox 2000 feature film Drum Line is currently in pre-production in the metro Atlanta area. Shooting on the project should begin in December. Drum Line will be directed by Charles Stone who created, wrote and starred in the Budweiser Whazzzup campaign.
The story follows a young musician from Harlem recruited to play on the drum line of a major southern university. Tim Bourne (Ever After, Big, Working Girl) will serve as line producer and Charles Bennett (Boycott, Miss Evers' Boys, Fled) returns to Georgia as production designer for Drum Line.

SPOTLIGHT: Savannah Film Commissioner Jay Self

Savannah Film Commissioner Jay Self is a member of the Georgia Film & Videotape Advisory Commission and also serves on the Business Development Committee.
Self was named as the first director of the Savannah Film Office in 1995 when the office was established under the auspices of the city of Savannah. In addition to Self, the Savannah Film Office staff includes a part time film location specialist and a contract location scout.
"I am very excited about the future of the film industry in Georgia," Self said. "Cooperative marketing efforts, extensive crew base, great variety of locations, along with the new film industry tax incentive legislation that Governor Barnes signed into law will keep the production spotlight on Georgia."
Under Self's leadership the Savannah Film Office's efforts have generated over $80 million dollars in economic impact from eight feature films, scores of television, commercial and still projects. Since 1995 Savannah has starred in The Gift, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Forces of Nature, The General's Daughter, The Gingerbread Man, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Kiss of Fire and Wild America.
Prior to serving in Savannah, Self spent three years as the assistant director of the Tennessee Film Entertainment and Music Commission. As part of the governor's staff he worked on many projects including The Jungle Book, The Specialist, The Firm and The Client.
Self received a Bachelor of Science degree from Middle Tennessee State University. He began his production career as a freelance production assistant. Self quickly rose to the level of location manager and then producer.
Jay Self is married and has two daughters.

Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River and its 159 counties showcase a variety of courthouses. The Jasper County Courthouse is located on the town square in Monticello, Georgia approximately 65 miles outside of Atlanta. Interactive Division Launched
Artifact Design has launched a new interactive division that will specialize in creating and implementing design for DVD and web-based projects.
"We've taken our mission of creating cutting-edge design for broadcast and are now applying it to the web," said Tanner Critz, director of Interactive Media.
Joining the division are senior designer Scott Schoeder, formerly with WebMD and designer Mark Lafond who was previously with CNN Interactive. Artifact has already completed websites for Film Captive Productions, King Plow Arts Center, Ron MacDonald Photography and Plaster City Films. Plaster City Films is a Hollywood-based production company led by Christopher Coppolla. The division also authored and designed a DVD for the locally produced short film Carma.

Welcome To Anatevka
Theatre and life collide in Welcome To Anatevka, a film directed by award-winning documentary filmmakers Ruth Leitman (Alma, Here's to the Ladies Who Punch) and James Jernigan (The Band). Anatevka is the village in the acclaimed musical Fiddler on the Roof. Welcome to Anatevka follows a spirited group of adult actors with developmental disabilities as they go through 10 weeks of intensive rehearsal to stage Fiddler on the Roof.
Welcome to Anatevka was filmed at the Atlanta International School with the Habima Players from the Marcus Jewish Community Center. The candid, often funny documentary is a testament to the will of the human spirit. Welcome to Anatevka will screen at the Lefont Plaza in Atlanta on October 24 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The filmmakers and cast will be in attendance. Tube & M-R Video Services Complete Construction Video

Tube and M-R Video Services recently completed a 25 minute video program for the Hardin Construction Group. Incorporating a smoke machine in the one-day shoot, Tube combined stage footage with that of an implosion that the construction company handled over 10 years ago. In addition to the stage shoot, Tube provided audio, editorial and graphics services under the direction of producer and owner of M-R Video Services, Mark Feinberg.
Burst-Terranella Chattahoochee Documentary Recognized
Getting the Dirt on Clean Streams, a new Fran Burst-Terranella documentary on water quality in the Chattahoochee River basin, explores successful ways to prevent eroded dirt from contaminating drinking water supplies. The documentary is a key part of Georgia's newly released Erosion Control Technical Study which received a 2001 Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations Research Foundation.
Written by Maggie Anderson, Getting the Dirt credits include Burst-Terranella as producer/director, Angela Carroll as assistant director, Kitty Ray Swain of Cat's Eye Production Services as on-line editor and Liz Storch as the voice over talent. Also in the news, Burst-Terranella's award-winning, half-hour documentary The Chattahoochee River: Muddied Waters, Clear Solutions, will return to Georgia Public Television (GPTV) this October during National River Awareness Month.
The Journey Continues

Oasis Recording recently completed the final surround-sound mix for The Journey, an autobiographical documentary based on the adventures of filmmaker Eric Saperston and a few of his friends. "The Journey is a daring, funny and heartwarming tale of people whose true to life integrity shines through in every part of this film," Oasis' re-recording mixer Bob Gillespie said.
The documentary was shot entirely with one Panasonic EZ-1 mini DV cam and was edited down from five hundred hours of original footage to its current ninety-minute length. The Journey recently won the 2001 Atlanta Film Festival's Audience Award and has been picked up for national distribution by Seventh Art Releasing. Drive To Arrive Campaign

The U.S. Army's Drive to Arrive safe driving campaign selected Post Modern Editorial, Inc. president Matthew Gore to write and produce twelve Public Service Announcements (PSAs).
The project was shot using a Sony HDW-F 900 camcorder-Sony's 24P HD camera. Gore chose director Karl Horstmann and his crew at TripleHorse Entertainment for the two-day shoot. "I knew Karl was perfect for this project," said Gore. "He was the only director in this area that had enough experience with the Sony 24P camera and Karl and his crew are known for their expertise."
The twelve country artists of Sony Records/Nashville that star in the spots received scripts addressing a certain "bad driving" practice. Artists appearing in the PSAs included Billy Ray Cyrus, Travis Tritt, Patty Loveless, Joe Diffie, Billy Gilman, Collin Raye and Tammy Cochran. The completed PSAs will run in over 120 army base theaters across the country.
Versfelt's Encounters With the Unexplained

Versfelt Communications Group Inc. has completed taping segments for the 2001 fall season of the PAX Television Network reality series Encounters With The Unexplained.
The Versfelt Communications Group team includes DP Porter Versfelt III, gaffer/ second camera Sam Hill and audio technician John Lanius. Encounters executive producer Dave Balsiger conducted interviews with five notable authors about their views on Biblical prophecy. The weekly, hour-long series is produced by Chuck Selier and Grizzly Adams Productions.
As part of a crew fielded by Bob Bennett and his RCB Productions of Atlanta, Versfelt covered the 2001 Cannes Film Festival in Cannes France for Entertainment Tonight, E! Entertainment Television and CNN Entertainment News.

Reflections in the Water: Looking Forward, Looking Back
While many things have changed at IMAGE Film & Video Center over the last 25 years, one thing has remained constant: without local, independent filmmakers IMAGE would not exist. Two filmmakers who have been with IMAGE since nearly the beginning are Fran Burst-Terranella and Steven Panayioto. While both have become staples in the Atlanta commercial corporate market they have managed to maintain strong ties to their indie roots. In their latest labors of love, Chattahoochee River: Muddied Waters, Clear Solutions by Burst-Terranella and The Forgotten Wonders Series Presents: The Erie Canal by Panayioto, the filmmakers blend their corporate savvy and independent ideals to help protect the environment and

preserve American history.
The "Reflections in the Water" screening will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday October 29, 2001 at the Georgia Pacific Auditorium at 133 Peachtree Street in Atlanta. Mediaswamp's Urban Comedy Carma
Mediaswamp Productions recently completed the short film Carma. The film was shot on DV in downtown Atlanta over four days in May and is directed by Ned Reid and DP'd by Tripp Rhame.
"Carma is about a pretty good guy who has a pretty bad day after buying a bad-luck car," producer Kevin Wild explains. Sound mixing was done by Soundbyte and graphic design by Artifact. Artifact also authored and designed a DVD of the film.
Currently focused on doing short films that have a "feature film feel," Mediaswamp is gearing up for three more short films this fall and winter. Wild expects to shoot their first feature in 2002. Pizza Pain Epiphany Screens
Writer/director Kreg Thornley's Pizza Pain Epiphany, recently screened at the Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery in Atlanta.
The film short tells the story of a hen-pecked husband who tries to order a pizza but accidentally orders a dominatrix. Vintage silent film comedies and the work of surrealist photographer Man Ray provided inspiration for Thornley's film.

Magick on Location with Denise Austin

Magick Lantern Creative Services was recently called upon to shoot fitness expert Denise Austin's latest Fit and Lite television programs for Lifetime Television.
During the week long shoot, Magick executive producer Bill Strohmeier directed the programs and supervised logistic and technical aspects of the shoot utilizing Sony Digital Betacam DVW-700 cameras and additional video gear. Strohmeier worked closely with executive producer/star Austin to feature her new workout routines.
The Magick team for this shoot included gaffer Carlton Patterson and audio engineer Mike Filosa. The project will be posted and finished at Magick Lantern's facility in Atlanta.

Claire To Premiere at Rialto

The world premiere of Atlanta filmmaker Milford Thomas' 60-minute silent film Claire will be held at the Rialto Center for Performing Arts in Atlanta on November 3.
The film, loosely based on a Japanese fable, was shot on an antique 35mm hand-crank Mitchell Standard camera. Claire chronicles an elderly male couple on a 1920s farm who discover a little girl from the moon inside an ear of corn and raise her as their own child.
Dozens of local based artists and technicians collaborated and contributed their talents to the film which was several years in the making. Claire will be presented with an original musical score by Atlanta composer Anne Richardson and performed live by a 12-piece chamber orchestra.

Eula Branham Documentary Screens

The Atlanta-based non-profit educational organization K.B. Productions, Inc., in association with Thought & Time Media Arts Productions recently held two public screenings of its educational documentary A Historical Dimension In Creative Learning: The Life & Travels of Georgia Educator, Historian, Librarian & Media Specialist Eula L. Branham.
The 2-hour documentary was written, produced and directed by Atlanta media artist Gerald R. White, hosted by Lynda Lee Osborne and narrated by Julian Wright. Original music was produced by Paul & Liz Hope, Carlton Clark, Richard Craig and DBrown Productions.
A Historical Dimension In Creative Learning... highlights Ms. Branham's 25 years as the first African-American Librarian at Atlanta's Margaret Mitchell elementary school. Profiles of former Morehouse College president and former Atlanta Board of Education president Dr. Benjamin E. Mays and author Margaret M. Mitchell are also featured. On-camera guests include executive director of the Margaret Mitchell House, Inc. Mary Rose Taylor, Coca-Cola vice president of corporate external affairs Ingrid Saunders Jones and TBS, Inc. corporate vice president of urban affairs Xernona Clayton.

D.I.F.F. 2001 Awards
Held over a four-day period, in the foothills of north Georgia, over 4000 people attended screenings at the first annual Dahlonega International Film Festival (D.I.F.F.). Some 162 independent films, video shorts and full-length features from 18 countries were screened at the festival. In addition to the screenings, an interactive symposium was held with celebrated independent filmmaker John

Waters (Hairspray, Serial Mom).
"We set out to lay the foundation for the most maker friendly festival in the world," D.I.F.F. co-founder and executive director Barry Norman said.
The first slate of D.I.F.F. Awards and D.I.F.F. Audience Awards were announced during the festival at midnight in the basement of Dahlonega's historic Holly Theatre. Crawford Communications Recognized by IMAGE
Crawford Communications Inc. was recently recognized with a 2001 IMAGE Award by the IMAGE Film & Video Center in Atlanta for its outstanding corporate contribution to the film industry in Georgia. IMAGE is the southeast's pre-eminent media arts organization, serving independent film and video makers by promoting the production, exhibition and public awareness of film and video as unique forms of artistic expression.
Crawford was among three honorees recognized by the organization during a gala in June. Governor Roy E. Barnes was also honored for his support in the film industry and Gary Moss, Academy Award winner and co-founder/first president of the IMAGE Film & Video Center was honored for his contributions to the arts.
14th Anniversary - Out on Film
Out on Film (OOF), the 14th annual Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Film Festival is

scheduled for November 7-11, 2001. Presented each year by IMAGE Film & Video Center, the event celebrates film and video work by and for the gay/lesbian/bi/transgendered community. Regal Cinemas is the presenting sponsor for the festival.
The 2000 Out on Film festival attracted over 3,600 patrons, double the audience of the previous year's festival and featured films including: The Broken Hearts Club, Aimee & Jaguar and the Audience Award-winner Sordid Lives. Following the success of last year's event, the 2001 festival will expand from four days to five and will return to the Regal Hollywood 24 at I-85 in Atlanta.

Epiphany Wraps

Director/DP Jim Hunter took advantage of an opportunity to demo the new Sony HDWF-900 high definition camera and teamed with several local artists to produce Epiphany. The dramatic short satirizes the struggle we often face between our intellect and our heart. Actress Marcie Seklecki plays an unwitting cupid who discovers and confronts this struggle in her own life.
Turner Studio's motion control camera operator Nigel Rowe co-produced Epiphany and animation was provided by Christopher Dinardo. Crew included art director Sally Rowe and Luminaire artist Natalie Khvita. Rob Grable, Shawn Malone and Brett Hartley of 68 Sound Inc. teamed up with Tony Messano on flugel horn to create Epiphany's soundtrack. Danny Maughon provided location assistance and polaroid transfer photography.
The project will be conformed in uncompressed HD on the Avid DS-HD at Lab 601 by Dave Ballard and J.C. Monzon. Lab 601 also serves as co-producer on the project, coordinating and handling post responsibilities.
Film Office Represented at Cineposium 2001
Georgia Film & Videotape office staff members Alison Fibben and Brenda Brayton recently attended Cineposium 2001 in Washington, D.C. The 25th annual educational conference of the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI), Cineposium provided film office staff and commissioners from around the world the opportunity to learn about the latest industry trends.
Cineposium panelists offered innovative techniques on handling various industry situations, shared methods of creating awareness of the benefits of the industry and explored better ways of working with government agencies. Speakers included independent filmmaker John Waters (Polyester, Cecil B. Demented), president and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America Jack Valenti and West Wing producer Lew Wells. Actor, producer, director, writer and founder of New Millenium

Studios, Tim Reid (Sister, Sister, WKRP) and his wife actress, producer, designer and co-founder of New Millenium Studios Daphne Maxwell Reid (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Murder She Wrote) shared their experiences and insights during the final session of the conference.
The Association of Film Commissioners International was formed by a small group of film commissioners who wanted to share information and learn from one another's experiences. Today the AFCI is a world-wide network with over 280 commissions from 30 countries devoted to the business of facilitating on-location production activity that generates billions of dollars annually.
Jammin' On the East Coast

Last month Rockhard Productions produced a Bubba Sparxx video and a Dirty video. Director Mark Klausfield, DP Barry Norwood and gaffer Michael Cain strove to complete these productions through amazing conditions. The Bubba Sparxx video, shot in Athens, Georgia included venomous snakes, adventures in a pigpen and tractor racing. The Dirty video consisted of the crew battling a mud bog up to their waists while the talent came up close and personal with a twelve-foot alligator. PC & E provided all the equipment including the Enlouva Crane, the Power Pod 2000 and camera car.

Atlanta based producer Tom Luse's Jeepers Creepers was the number one movie in the U.S. over Labor Day and established a new box office record for a release during that weekend. He produced the film for American Zoetrope and it was distributed by MGM/UA. Luse is in post production on the black comedy Lost Junction starring Neve Campbell.
Robin Meyers recently worked as script supervisor on a commercial for the Mercedes Benz 2002 M-class SUV.
IMAGE Film & Video Center has named Atlantan Mark A. Smith as programming director. Smith will be responsible for programming monthly screenings, workshops and the AIVF Mediamaker Salon Series.
Giant Studio's Fruits of Labor, conceived by Rudy Poat and executive produced by Candice Alger, screened during the SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles. The animated short was chosen as a finalist for the San Jose Film Festival Cinequest 2001 and the International Animation Festival 2001 in Annecy, France.
Get-A-Grip's co-owner and key grip Jeff Henderson provided grip and electrical services for a music video by the Tupac Shakur Foundation's youth group. Co-owner and production consultant Mark Henderson and gaffer Terry Moore also donated their services.

scouting and managing clients including music videos by FM Rocks (Lil' Bow Wow, Little John and the Eastside Boys), Rockhard Film (Bubba Sparxx), Department of Film (Nelly and the St. Lunatics), Urban Music Group, Heavyweight Films and Squeak Pictures. Most recently he assisted Hype Williams and Instinct Films with their shoot with Cadillac Tah and Jah Rule.
