WOMEN'S HEALTH MEDICAID PROGRAM for Women with Breast and Cervical Cancer
What is the Women's Health Medicaid Program? It is a program that provides full coverage Medicaid for eligible women under 65
who have breast and/or cervical cancer and need treatment.
It is a partnership of the Georgia Department of Human Resources and the Georgia Department of Community Health, funded by the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000 with matching funds appropriated by the state through the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
Why does Georgia need the Women's Health Medicaid Program? The program helps save lives from breast and cervical cancers.
Approximately 1,100 Georgia women will lose their lives this year from breast cancer and 130 will die of cervical cancer. A disproportionate number of deaths occur among women of minority or low-income groups.
When breast cancer is diagnosed and treated early, more than 90 percent of women will survive five or more years.
When cervical cancer is diagnosed and treated early, nearly 100 percent of women will survive five or more years.
Where can I get more information? County health departments and partner providers screen women for eligibility for
the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program and help women complete presumptive eligibility forms for Medicaid.
