Domestic Violence in Georgia
National facts
On average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day in the United States.
In the year 2001, more than half a million American women were victims of nonfatal violence committed by an intimate partner.
As many as 324,000 women each year experience intimate partner violence during their pregnancy
Homicide is the leading cause of death among pregnant women. Approximately one in five female high school students reports being
physically or sexually abused by a dating partner. More than half of female victims of intimate violence live homes with children
under the age of 12. Studies suggest that between 3.3 to 10 million children witness some form of
domestic violence annually.
Georgia facts In 2004, 107 Georgia citizens died as a result of domestic violence. Georgia law enforcement officers responded to 67,989 family violence incidents in 2003. 93,280 crisis calls were made to domestic violence shelters in 2005. Georgia's certified family violence programs provided shelter for 4653 adults and 4956 children for a total of 219,982 bed nights in 2005.
Georgia resources A statewide, toll-free 24-hour crisis line 1-800-33-HAVEN (334-2836) will automatically connect a caller to the nearest family violence agency. Outside of Georgia, a national, toll-free 24 hour crisis line 1-800-799-SAFE will automatically connect a caller to the nearest family violence agency. Georgia certifies 45 family violence agencies throughout the state. These agencies are operated by private, non-profit agencies and provide 24-hour crisis lines; legal and social service advocacy; children's programs; parenting support and education; emotional support and community education. These agencies also provide emergency safe shelter. All services are free and confidential. All county DFCS offices have domestic violence assessors to assist DFCS staff in providing crisis intervention and support services to domestic violence victims receiving or applying for TANF assistance.
